Should I go to A&E?

Had lower wisdom teeth out on Thursday and been on two lots of antibiotics since, amoxicillin and another one beginning with n maybe.
Woke up in severe pain at 3am and since then the ibuprofen and paracetamol have barely dulled it. Rang the dentist at 9am and they said to just keep going with the ibuprofen and antibiotics. Rang 111 at about 4 and a dental nurse called me back and basically said the same.
My right side is really swollen and a red patch has formed which has spread. This is what worries me most. I’ve attached pics - one taken at 3am and one at 5pm.

I'm glad your sorted. Heat was the only thing that helped with the pain for wisdom tooth removal, I remember using a microwavable heat cushion and had that held to my jaw.

amusedbush · 27/07/2025 08:32

It sounds like you've had a long night but I'm glad you're being taken care off. Hopefully you'll feel much better after it's all flushed out and the IV antibiotics have done their thing.

I would have been hesitant to go to A&E in your position too (my GP surgery has a big sign up that basically says "fuck off to a dentist and take your sore teeth with you") but any infection in the face or head is a Big Deal.

LakieLady · 27/07/2025 08:38

You're probably on the way to surgery now, OP, and I hope it goes as well as it possibly can. I bet you're glad you went now, that could have got incredibly nasty if you'd left it.

You'll feel so much better when that's drained and the ABs start to work.

Yes get it looked as asap. Did you tell 111 about the spreading rash?
Good luck hope it gets sorted soon.

TheGrimSmile · 27/07/2025 08:43

Yes. It could lead to sepsis. Just go.

TheGrimSmile · 27/07/2025 08:45

Sorry, just seen updates.

Pinty · 27/07/2025 08:46

I have just seen your update. I hope that your surgery takes place very soon and that you feel better quickly.

justasking111 · 27/07/2025 08:47

Neighbour had awful complication from tooth extraction ended up in hospital. Until then I had no idea something like this could happen.

That's fine if it isnt infected, if its infected heat can spread infection

Really glad to know you’re being treated. I have a friend who had everything you described plus the redness and swelling. He didn’t seek treatment soon enough though and almost died from sepsis. He lost part of his jaw.

God, that's terrible!!
Thank goodness OP went and got sorted.

I think this has been a lesson.
When in excruciating pain, go get help!

OP, Good luck with operation. You're in the right place and in good hands x

deb6789 · 27/07/2025 08:50

I’ve had a dry socket too, was incredibly painful. I would say you have an infection and yes, go to A&E.

I would like to say RTFT but if you do read it, you'll see why I'm reluctant to say it 😉

Anyway, OP is having surgery this morning and has had good strong pain relief.

yeah but once the surgery is done, heat will help.

Devonpuff · 27/07/2025 08:57

Glad you are now in hospital and getting treatment - but very sorry you are in pain and having to struggle with this complication. Hope things get better soon and quickly.

F1LandoFan · 27/07/2025 08:58

Good luck Op xxx you’ll be feeling much better soon hopefully xx and just think of the GA as a deep nap xx

Thanks again everyone!
After the anaesthetist coming round for a chat, the maxofacial surgeon drawing on my cheek and being given my gown and told to wait for surgery.. all of a sudden 2 head and neck doctors appear and let me know they want to give me antibiotics and steroids today, monitor me throughout the night and decide on surgery tomorrow instead.

taxidriver · 27/07/2025 09:27

what a relief to hear you did go to A & E

Lifebeganat50 · 27/07/2025 09:33

So glad you went to A&E-wisdom tooth removal is brutally painful even without infection!
If they’re going to monitor you, make sure they keep on top of your pain relief while they do it! Hope it’s sorted quickly whether or not they operate

youalright · 27/07/2025 09:34

I was more saying it generally rather then for op specific case so that others dont do it

Enko · 27/07/2025 09:45

Pleased.you went.. how are.you feeling now? Hope they keep the painkillers up

Don’t you just love it when you get conflicting opinions!
Well I’m really glad that you went to A&E and didn’t just leave it. At least the hospital staff can keep an eye on you. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 27/07/2025 09:59

Thank goodness you went to A&E. Hopefully they can control it with antibiotics and painkillers.

Wishing you a speedy recovery ❤️

Natsku · 27/07/2025 10:01

Glad you went in! Hopefully antibiotics and steroids will be enough to calm it down so you don't need surgery.
