Should I go to A&E?

Had lower wisdom teeth out on Thursday and been on two lots of antibiotics since, amoxicillin and another one beginning with n maybe.
Woke up in severe pain at 3am and since then the ibuprofen and paracetamol have barely dulled it. Rang the dentist at 9am and they said to just keep going with the ibuprofen and antibiotics. Rang 111 at about 4 and a dental nurse called me back and basically said the same.
My right side is really swollen and a red patch has formed which has spread. This is what worries me most. I’ve attached pics - one taken at 3am and one at 5pm.

Should I go to A&E?

A&E won’t do anything for the pain. They will turn you away even if you arrive in tears becayse of the excruciating agony

See your GP asap and get them to prescribe Zapain for the pain and a different type of antibiotic

Be persistent because dentists can only prescribe certain medication which don’t always work so you even if your GP says they can’t prescribe as it has to be the dentist you just stand your ground and say they can’t prescribe you what you need and your GP will prescribe the zapain and antibiotics

RTFT

DomPom47 · 27/07/2025 05:39

Dental pain can be horrific. Hopefully they will get you sorted and you will be pain free soon 🤞

PeonyBulb · 27/07/2025 05:40

@Isthismykarma

I’m so pleased you ended up with someone who is actually helping you

But the fact that you were sent to another hospital just shows how A&E do not like dealing with teeth so I think you’re very lucky you’re being positively dealt with and properly examined

I hope it gets sorted out soon for you

Jesus Christ @Petitchat you’re quick to jump in aren’t you with your claws out

@WoodlandLoveyes I did realise to late there was an update to which I penned a reply but clearly not quickly enough before posters jumped in to berate me. Your post was a kind one.

I just wanted to quickly give someone in pain some advice before RTFT. My bad for trying to help someone suffering in agony

I would definately contact the clinic that removed the teeth.
They will see you at short notice if you insist.

It is a specialist area. A &E might be a waste of time.

I (and my kids too when they had wisdom teeth romoved) was swollen for a week and had bruising develop. One of my kids had dry socket and needed the Maxillofacial Surgeon to treat that.

Petitchat · 27/07/2025 05:51

Yeah ok.
Is this better RTFT please

Yes It looks like Cellulitis
You may need admitting for IV antibiotics

She has been.

I hope by now OP you've had a round of IV antibiotics. Fingers crossed for your op. Have you let family and friends know?

Petitchat · 27/07/2025 05:57

OP
Hope you're feeling a bit better by now.
Try not to worry about the GA
A pp gave some good advice, think of it as a rest. You'll be fine.

KittyPurrs · 27/07/2025 06:28

Ouch, that’s bringing back (terrible) memories of my infection post root canal. My whole face swelled and a red patch crept down my neck. Mine was eventually sorted by a double dose of antibiotics (taken together) but the pain! Paracetamol and ibuprofen totally useless and the dentist refused to prescribe anything stronger.
So big sympathy from me - and hope the op goes very smoothly and you’re on the mend soon.

Isthismykarma · 27/07/2025 06:50

I got IV paracetamol in the end which worked better than the morphine and almost instantly!
Didnt get IV antibiotics until 6am because the pharmacy was shut or something. Still not had the IV ibuprofen because they’ve ran out or something.
Thanks all for the caring comments, and talking me down about the GA! Nil by mouth for now and just playing the waiting game to be told when to go down :)

I’m so glad you went.

IV paracetamol is bizarrely effective when it needs to be!

CaptainFuture · 27/07/2025 06:55

Wow @Isthismykarma glad you're getting sorted, best of luck for today!

Questionsquestions23 · 27/07/2025 07:14

Oh you poor thing. I’m sure you’ll be fine. I’m glad you’re being sorted out today. Wishing you a speedy recovery x

Studyunder · 27/07/2025 07:24

Really glad to know you’re being treated. I have a friend who had everything you described plus the redness and swelling. He didn’t seek treatment soon enough though and almost died from sepsis. He lost part of his jaw.

Happypotter77 · 27/07/2025 07:25

Glad you're feeling a little better Isthismykarma
It's amazing how effective paracetamol is by IV!

I know it's difficult but try not to worry about the GA. I've had at least 20 GAs and was initially anxious, but now I look forward to them as the best sleep ever. Honestly you'll be in the prep area and have a cannula put in and a mask on and having a chat with the theatre staff and next thing you know you'll be waking up in recovery. It always feels like no time at all has passed. You might feel a bit drowsy for a little while afterwards but it's just a nice cosy sleepy feeling and nothing to worry about.

Take care of yourself, sending good wishes for a speedy recovery 💐

Anewuser · 27/07/2025 07:29

Well done for getting emergency treatment. Most people don’t realise how dangerous having teeth out can be.

Get well soon.

Strangerthanfictions · 27/07/2025 07:49

Let us know how you are post OP, so glad you were seen and it's been dealt with quickly

Supergirl1958 · 27/07/2025 07:59

OMG @Isthismykarma i would ring your dentist back in the morning and ask to escalate this! So glad you are getting treatment

Ooothatsagoodone · 27/07/2025 08:12

I'm late to the party but yes I had a dry socket from a wisdom tooth extraction. Awful. I was to and fro from the dentist for a month, so glad I had the tooth out on a Monday not Friday

Your reaction to someone commenting RTFT to you is OTT.@Petitchat hasn't been rude to you or attacked you or anyone else.

Rather than accept that you (like so many of us have also done) posted without reading the OP's updates, you chose instead to jump on the person who pointed it out to you.

Even if the timing was wrong, your advice to @Isthismykarma was kind and well-meant. You might want to think about why such a little thing made you so angry and defensive. Be kind to yourself and others.
