Which part of the UK are you least familiar with?

For me it's the West Country counties, namely Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and Somerset (I've probably opened a whole new debate as whether they're considered to be part of the West Country!) and anywhere further north of Edinburgh.

I'm definitely going to remedy this as my sister and I are planning on a summer of road trips next year.

Anywhere outside of London if I’m honest.

Lisanne55 · 26/07/2025 23:07

I've just looked at a map. I've never been to Wiltshire, Essex, Leeds/Bradford area of Yorkshire, the Isle of Wight, the Highlands or any Scottish Islands or Northern Ireland.

UnctuousUnicorns · 26/07/2025 23:39

I have visited, holidayed or lived in the following:

(In England)
Cambridge, Cheshire, Cornwall, the Lakes and other parts of Cumbria, Derbyshire, Devon, Dorset, Durham, Yorkshire (chiefly York, Harrogate, Leeds, Scarborough and Haworth), London, Manchester, Hampshire, Kent, Lancashire, Merseyside, Northamptonshire, Oxford, Shropshire, Somerset, Staffordshire, Sussex, Tyne and Wear, Warwickshire, and Wiltshire.

(In Wales) mainly north coast or Northern towns e.g. Rhyl, Conwy, Chirk, Llandudno, Llangollen, also Aberystwyth, Towyn, parts of the Llyn peninsula, other places maybe that I can't remember over 50 plus years.

Scotland - lived in Renfrewshire and Greater Glasgow, visited or holidayed in Edinburgh, various towns in Ayrshire, Perthshire, Dundee, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, mainly Gardenstown, Banff and Macduff, St. Andrews, Arran, Bute, Cumbria, Helensburgh, Stirling, various towns in Argyllshire, Dumfries and parts of D and G e.g. Kirkcudbright. Also parts of Fife. There must be more but again I can't remember them all.

Like pp I have never visited Northern Ireland. Really should put that right. Other places not mentioned will be ones I've never been to or just passed through on my way to somewhere else.

I like this description! I have a friend from Shropshire who describes it as the bit between Birmingham and Wales Smile

Shropshire is a beautiful county; we holidayed there last year. 🥰

I'm not quite convinced Dorset is a real place. I think it might be a literary invention.

We must have spent July 1st to 15th inside an author's head then. 😅 Oh well, I had a lovely time. 🤷‍♀️ 😅

East Anglia

I would like to see Liverpool and Manchester. Also Belfast. I have been to a wedding years ago in NI but didn't get a chance to go sightseeing unfortunately, had to head straight back home. I have heard it's beautiful and would love to see some of NI.

Any time I've ventured into England I've always looked forward to returning home to Scotland.....😂😂😂

I feel that way too. Sorry guys but I love my Scottish water!😂

opaltimer1 · 27/07/2025 08:58

North east and east of the country (Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire), never been. Also, Scotland-only been once

No17CherryTreeLane · 28/07/2025 15:27

Isle of Man, that’s another!
And the Channel Islands.

They're Crown Dependencies.
We can count them if you want.

But you're from Hemel Hempstead..... isn't Bedfordshire your next door neighbour?
Or are you actually not from Hemel......🤔😂

Oooo, we don't go over there 🤣🤣🤣

blackheartsgirl · 28/07/2025 20:25

I’ve been to most of the uk, my parents did a lot of travelling around the uk when I as a child and teenager, we had a caravan and parents spent most weekends and holidays travelling.

Ive been to Dunnet Head, John o groats down to the lizard in Cornwall, been to wales (lived here for 33 years) and done Northumberland Coast, Norfolk Broads, the lakes, the peaks, I grew up in West Sussex so I’ve visited neighbouring counties in the south, hmmm midlands too, familiar with Shropshire, it’s the neighbouring county to where I am.

However as an adult I’ve not travelled that much, nor gone on many holidays either abroad or the uk, financial worries, circumstances, caring for SN children who hate travelling has taken its toll. But now they’re older, and moved away or are much more independent I can finally start going places again.

Ive never been to N Ireland nor Shetland or Orkney, or the Isle of Man and I really want to go Pembrokeshire and revisit Northumberland

Northern Ireland
Midlands
Thames Valley

enjoyinglifenowretired · 28/07/2025 20:37

I’m from the South and have never visited north of the Midlands. Always easier o hop on a ferry to France for family holidays. It just seems such a long way to drive to places like the Lake District or northern cities that we have never bothered.

SpottyAardvark · 28/07/2025 20:42

Wales. I’m in my 50s and have visited the country a total of three times in my entire life. In England, I have never been to the Isle of Wight.

For most English people, however, the answer will obviously be Northern Ireland. In my experience the majority don’t even realise it’s part of the UK, never mind having actually been there.

CeeJay81 · 28/07/2025 23:27

East Anglia, Northen Ireland and West Scotland. Never been to these. Also never been to Cornwall.

mindingmyown37 · 28/07/2025 23:29

Devon and Cornwall. hear about how nice they are, just never been
