Which part of the UK are you least familiar with?

For me it's the West Country counties, namely Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and Somerset (I've probably opened a whole new debate as whether they're considered to be part of the West Country!) and anywhere further north of Edinburgh.

I'm definitely going to remedy this as my sister and I are planning on a summer of road trips next year.

I'm not quite convinced Dorset is a real place. I think it might be a literary invention.

The counties west of London before Wales - Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire.

Edited

I like this description! I have a friend from Shropshire who describes it as the bit between Birmingham and Wales Smile

Yes.
Enid Blyton invented it 😁

LemondrizzleShark · 26/07/2025 20:19

I have literally never been to Norfolk, Suffolk or Essex (except for the bit inside the M25 which is technically Essex but really still London). I should go at some point, but honestly I live in the south and like the north and west, and just don’t have the time/inclination to visit the east as well. Maybe when I retire.

Hitlist · 26/07/2025 20:23

I have lived and worked in three major cities in the Uk but never been to the North East or Scotland or Northern Ireland.

I'm in London.
You'd have to pay a fortune in ulez and congestion charge to get me out 😂

I’m incredibly poorly travelled.

I’ve been to parts of the North West, The Midlands (West and East), Somerset, The Cotswolds, North and West Wales, London once, Peterborough and Milton Keynes for festivals, Norfolk as a kid, and a couple of places in Scotland. Beyond that, I’ve been nowhere, not even outside of the UK.

No17CherryTreeLane · 26/07/2025 21:32

@TulipTuesday are you OK with that or would you like to travel more?

YourBlueScroller · 26/07/2025 21:33

Norfolk

MyIvyGrows · 26/07/2025 21:35

The south, especially Essex/Kent/ the bit in the middle above the Isle of Wight. Never been, except to the airports!

user3827 · 26/07/2025 21:36

I’m very curious about the Isle of Man and the cats

MadisonAvenue · 26/07/2025 21:37

The south east, apart from London, and the north east.

Roundaboot · 26/07/2025 21:39

Brenna24 · 26/07/2025 18:37

The south east. I live in Scotland and have been to Northern Ireland, Wales, the south west and the North.

Same but in reverse! I'm from the SE, and have spent significant time in Wales, the Midlands and visited other parts of England and NI but I've only ever had two brief visits to Scotland (Edinburgh both times).
I really want to do a holiday in Scotland, especially the Highlands and islands

ThatsNotMyTeen · 26/07/2025 21:40

OSTMusTisNT · 26/07/2025 18:29

Northern Ireland, never been.

This, I would love to but accommodation always looks pricey

Bitteralmond · 26/07/2025 21:43

I've never been to Northern Ireland, only visited Glasgow in Scotland. Never been to the North East. I spent a day in Lincoln in 1985, apart from that the eastern counties are a mystery to me. Lots of places are on my wish list including Norfolk, Yorkshire, the Pembrokeshire coast, Edinburgh and Northumberland. I know my husband's country much better than my own.

Would also love to visit the lake District...it just feels so far away and I have no idea how to plan a trip there

Seriously? Get on a train or get a coach? Book an airbnb or B&B?

Is it possible to get around & see the area by public transport once you get there?

Some places are easy to get to by train but then very car centric when you get there. Alot of rural areas tend to be like that unfortunately. Not much point visiting a new area to then be stuck inside a b&b

That's The New Forest national park, Hampshire. It's one of the most beautiful places in southern England.

Morgenrot25 · 26/07/2025 21:57

Any time I've ventured into England I've always looked forward to returning home to Scotland.....😂😂😂

I'm not quite convinced Dorset is a real place. I think it might be a literary invention.

I’m from Dorset and if I ever mention it people often asked where in Dorset. I then ask them where they know, because where I’m from isn’t near anywhere that anyone has ever heard of. (I don’t count Bournemouth as Dorset).

I don’t know Cumbria, Northumberland and all around there. I’ve also got no idea what the counties to the north of London are. Places like Bedford and Northampton, no idea.

I think I lived in Surrey and Sussex at various points but I’m not sure to be honest.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 26/07/2025 22:17

Wales. Never been.

Squirrelintree · 26/07/2025 22:17

Never been but would love to go to Guernsey, Alderney, Isle of Man, Orkney and Shetland, Isle of Skye, Cairngorms.

Haven't been to and not fussed about visiting (sorry!) Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Lincolnshire, Northern Ireland.

Would absolutely recommend Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fort William, Newcastle, the countryside around it into what I call "the empty north", the Lake District (travel by train and hire a car there), Snowdonia/Eyri, the north west cities, the Peak district, Cornwall, Devon, Exmoor, Bath, London, Brighton, South Downs, Arundel, Jersey and Sark. Dorset is a real place and a lot of it is stunningly beautiful, the countryside inland is quieter than the coast. Also some lovely canals (there is a channel 4 programme about canal boat life which is strangely soothingly addictive).

If you are visiting Wiltshire OP, see how many white horses you can spot (chalk ones on hills)

CatFromEdinburgh · 26/07/2025 22:37

Live in Scotland and have been fortunate enough to visit quite a bit of the UK. However have never made it to Lincolnshire or East Yorkshire; west Wales; or the islands except the Hebrides - e.g. Isle of Wight; Isle of Man; Channel Islands, Orkney and Shetland. Hope to remedy the latter two soon.

Edit: but to answer the OP's question, I'm probably least familiar with Wales.

TheDogsMother · 26/07/2025 22:52

IMissSparkling · 26/07/2025 19:12

England. Outside of London, I haven't really spent much time there. Nor would I really want to tbh.

Why is that ?

Dr13Hadley · 26/07/2025 23:02

I’m pretty well travelled around the UK / British Isles apart from Ireland where I’ve never been but would like to go so I’ve highlighted the areas I’ve never been. Picture incoming……..

Which part of the UK are you least familiar with?
