Which part of the UK are you least familiar with?

For me it's the West Country counties, namely Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and Somerset (I've probably opened a whole new debate as whether they're considered to be part of the West Country!) and anywhere further north of Edinburgh.

I'm definitely going to remedy this as my sister and I are planning on a summer of road trips next year.

I've never been to Northern Ireland.
The east bit of England - Norfolk, Lincolnshire etc. Not really been there.
Manchester and Liverpool I have never been to (well I did do a day trip to the Granada Studio Tour in Manchester about a million years ago).
If I had to pick one of those to visit the I'd really like to visit Liverpool.
I was obsessed with Liverpool based "saga" novels a decade or so ago.

I've never been to Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland...would really like to though. Would also love to visit the lake District...it just feels so far away and I have no idea how to plan a trip there

Do you live in England or are you overseas?

If you live in England but have never visited any of the other UK countries, why ? Do you travel overseas?

Tinytigertail · 26/07/2025 18:47

The Midlands and anywhere North that isn't a city.

No17CherryTreeLane · 26/07/2025 18:47

Although I feel as if I am contradicting myself as I have been to Cornwall, Dorset, Devon and Bristol which are also considered part of the WC.

Yes I live in London and do go abroad. My parents used to take us on lots of UK holidays but for some reason we never made it to Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland....no particular reason. Hopefully one day I will.

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/07/2025 18:49

Northern Ireland
Cumbria (coast only. I've been to the lakes and Carlisle)
Far north of Scotland (been up as far as Inverness on the east coast and Skye on the west).
North Norfolk.
Orkneys, Shetland and outer Hebrides.

I'm from South west England and have done most of the south and Wales. I also have family in Essex , Norwich Kent and central Scotland.

You live in London and have travelled overseas but the Lake District feels too far away? 🤔

Well apparently a train from where I live to the lake District involves 3/4 changes...it probably is easier and maybe even quicker for me to get to Gatwick and get a plane.

Edited to add...I've google mapped it and from mine to the Lake District is between 5-6 hours that's whether I drive or get trains

Well France is probably closer to London than the Lake District 😂

ExponentialDelivery · 26/07/2025 18:52

Actually the furthest north I have been in Scotland is Aberdeen so I'll add the are to the north to my list.

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/07/2025 18:55

DH has lived in England for nearly 40 years. (Was born in the Glasgow area). He has cousins who fly out to the costas and Greece every year (sometimes more than once) but have never visited us in Bristol.

Poshjock · 26/07/2025 18:56

I'm 50 and don't really do much foreign holidays. I do multiple UK holidays and breaks and have done all my life since I was a babe in arms in my parents caravan. Done all of Scotland, extensively north England (E&W), Yorkshire, Cheshire, Lakes, Peak and Potteries and N Wales by the time I was an adult. Extended down into Norfolk, London, Surrey, Oxford, down into Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. Work often on South coast in Portsmouth and Southampton.

I haven't spent any time in South Wales or South East England. I also haven't spent much time in Ireland, apart from Cobh, Cork and Dublin. Never visited Northern Ireland. I am hoping to get N.I soon though but its taken DH 20 years to agree to go.

Isn’t there a train from Euston to Oxenholme any more?

Macclesfield.

I'm not sure...when I looked it up it was suggesting changing in Manchester....

Oh actually I have seen direct ones...that could be an option...thanks

True. But if you'd love to visit the Lakes make it happen. Maybe make a detour into Wales on the way.

I always find it strange that people travel all over the world yet never visit other parts of the UK.

From my part of South London it takes 2 trains just to get to Euston (if counting the tube as a train) 😂

Horrible station.

North West of Scotland

RantzNotBantz · 26/07/2025 19:05

Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland in that order.

We live in one of these :)
Be aware that large parts of Glos are in the Cotswolds and are extremely busy in summer. We tend to avoid going out to those parts as it's just too busy these days. Outside the OANB (and in other counties) is just as pretty countryside and will have significantly fewer tourists, unless you decide to visit Avebury for the day on the summer solstice like we did, and wonder why it's suddenly extremely busy 🤦‍♀️😂

Anyway for me it's Northern Ireland, and in England, Lincolnshire

I live in the Lakes and frequently go to London for the day by train. It's an incredibly straightforward journey. Get on a train at Euston. Get off 2.45 hours later at Oxenholme. It's a direct, fast train with no changes. Take a connection to Windermere and you're in the Lake District.

You can either stay in Windermere which is very touristy with lots of stuff to do which doesn't involve mountain climbing or you can hop on the 555 bus at the station and head up to Ambleside, Grasmere or Keswick where there are bigger hills and other lakes.

In answer to the OPs question the only part of the UK I've never been to is Northern Ireland. I'm pretty well travelled in England, Wales and Scotland.

FlatErica · 26/07/2025 19:07

Northern Ireland.
