Which part of the UK are you least familiar with?

For me it's the West Country counties, namely Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and Somerset (I've probably opened a whole new debate as whether they're considered to be part of the West Country!) and anywhere further north of Edinburgh.

I'm definitely going to remedy this as my sister and I are planning on a summer of road trips next year.

England. Outside of London, I haven't really spent much time there. Nor would I really want to tbh.

But we're nice here in England.... I promise 🥹

London, Manchester, Birmingham.

Needmorelego · 26/07/2025 19:16

Do you live in England or are you overseas?

If you live in England but have never visited any of the other UK countries, why ? Do you travel overseas?

Visiting the Lake District Cumbria very soon. First time. Never been before. Looking forward to it!

EverardDeTroyes · 26/07/2025 19:17

Scotland and, bizarrely perhaps, Suffolk. I've only been to Scotland once for a day and once for a (miserable) weekend. Not sure I've ever been to Suffolk. Also don't really know mid and North Wales that well, but better than I know Scotland and Suffolk. Everywhere else, I have some knowledge of. Northern Ireland, to a poster who mentioned it, is bloody gorgeous.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 26/07/2025 19:17

NI, as like PPs, haven't been there yet. Am very comfortable in lots of Scotland and the Lakes though. Am an ex-Londoner.

Meadowfinch · 26/07/2025 19:18

Northern Ireland and the borders of Scotland

Cinaferna · 26/07/2025 19:21

I don't think I've ever been to Hereford or Shropshire - Ludlow and Ledbury - places like that.

Never been to Leeds and only spent an hour or two in Liverpool. And I've never been to Whitby either, which is high on my wish list of places to visit in UK.

RandomUsernameHere · 26/07/2025 19:23

Scotland and Northern Ireland as never been to either.

ReignOfError · 26/07/2025 19:23

I’ve never been to Shetland, or Belfast, despite spending time elsewhere in Northern Ireland.

Thanks for the tip...I will have a google!

Take a train to Penrith and a bus from there to Keswick. Book somewhere central B&B or self catering. Lots of walks from the door. Both flat walks by the lake and easy fells. Lots of shops in town selling walking gear if you need it. As pp said check the local website for info on walking routes and things to do.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 26/07/2025 19:29

N.I - never been.

East coast of England - been but when a child and don't remember much at all.

Scottish highlands - been to Scottish Lowlands but no higher.

Lived in various bits of Southern/Northern/Mildand bits of England - been to most large regional areas of England at least- been to most large regional areas of wales and live in South Wales.

slightlydistrac · 26/07/2025 19:30

Manchester and surrounds, for about a 40 mile radius.
Lincolnshire.
NI.

Tiddlywinkly · 26/07/2025 19:33

NE England
Scotland - only been to Edinburgh so far
Ireland and NI - never been. It's on the list

FluffykinsTheFerociousFeralFelineFury · 26/07/2025 19:33

The East Midlands and Humber region, particularly the coast. I've never been to Skegness!

stickybear · 26/07/2025 19:34

Northern Ireland, and England east of the M1 Grin There are also areas I've never been to that I feel I 'know' to some extent from books, TV etc, but other areas that I have very little mental image of

TheeNotoriousPIG · 26/07/2025 19:34

Anywhere south of Yorkshire! I've been to places like Shropshire and Dorset for holidays, so I'd probably say that I'm least familiar with the capital. I've been through London once, but never above ground!

I'd also say any of the smaller islands off the UK coastline, but I'd like to remedy this. It's just that so many of them are so far away from where I live, and a potential pain to get to and from (depending on the weather). I have visions of being stranded on an island, trying to get phone signal so that I could make my excuses as to why I had to miss work!

Karistyleaftea · 26/07/2025 19:38

The UK has some of the most beautiful places .
I feel lucky to have lived in the North, South , East and West ( DH in the services) but I do not know the counties that border Wales at all and I aim to rectify this .

MandarinsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 26/07/2025 19:39

I've just entertained myself working my way through an atlas. I've been to every county in England and Wales with the exception of the Isle of Wight, but have only visited southern Scotland. I've never been to any parts of the island of Ireland, either North or South.

Port1aCastis · 26/07/2025 19:54

Unfamiliar with London and the South East. I live in Cornwall but I have visited Scotland Ireland and Wales. We have been holidaying on Jersey for the past couple of years, we also have friends in Seattle so we've been over to visit them a lot
However I'm involved in tourism so am very very busy in the summer months and any time off for holidays has to be out of season

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 26/07/2025 19:57

I haven't been to Isle of Wight or Isle of Man or Channel Islands - but we've looked at going there - DH been - but we've not got there yet.

Klp122 · 26/07/2025 20:00

Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Wales and the Channel Islands - although might be booking a holiday on one of the latter soon.

EveryDayisFriday · 26/07/2025 20:02

Kent and the south coast up to Devon. NI.

We're trying to travel around the UK more and over the last few years we've toured Scotland, Welsh Borders, Lake District and N Wales. We plan to see more of Yorkshire and the peak district over the next few years.

InMyOpenOnion · 26/07/2025 20:03

The counties west of London before Wales - Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire.
