What make/model of old car would you like to own?

Provided you don't already. Anything out of production, any age. I have two.

-Chrysler Avenger, preferably a saloon but I'll settle for an estate. Has to be
Chrysler too, not the earlier Hillman. I prefer the lights! I've always had a lot of
time for Rootes Group cars on account of their styling. Similarly, I like the
Chrysler 180 (an enlarged Avenger) and the Sunbeam Rapier and Alpine.

  • Riley/Wolseley Elf. A neat and rather smarter Mini with an extended boot. My
elderly neighbour had one decades ago. It just kept going. The grey colour was a little dull but the car itself was grand.

We had a Morris Minor in 1963
My dad drove us from the NE of Scotland to Belgium in it to visit the family he'd stayed with during the war.
Sadly I was only 1 so can't remember it

That's one helluva journey with a one year old.
Hats off to your parents.👍😁

Badbadbunny · 26/07/2025 23:01

Ezesonfire · 26/07/2025 23:25

I had one, and I loved it. One of my favourites and surprisingly fun and nippy to drive. An XR2 with a curvy body and drove like a go cart. Really really regretted selling it, but I sold it for a MX-5 which was another brilliant car and I loved it too but the 2 seater just wasn't practical. Would have either of them again today.

I always had a thing for the MGB. There was a car garage near me, when I was a teenager, and there was a stunning cream one, which had been upholstered in cream leather with blue pinstriping and blue carpet and trim inside. It was insanely classy. I wouldn't just want an MGB - I would want that one

Edited

They are starting to banned from low emission zones etc but I might buy one and restore it just for fun, one day, just because they came out when we were 16 I think and I always wanted one.

TizerorFizz · 26/07/2025 22:24

@Shade17 Well yes but no one referred to them as that. We had a black BMW325i circa 1986. D reg! A very enjoyable car! We also had a C reg Lotus Excel. That was actually my car and I loved it. Would not mind having another one!

That’s how everyone in BMW circles refers to them for the past 20 years at least, the e (and f and g) codes are the only way to navigate the different generations of BMWs.

Flatbellyfella · 27/07/2025 09:42

A 1930s Austin 7 that was in good running condition.

TheTecknician · 27/07/2025 11:26

I've noticed the fondness for split windscreen Beetles. Early Morris Minors and Land Rovers had these too.

I would love a Talbot samba

Having had one as my first car which managed to rust from the inside out: no you wouldn’t. You really wouldn’t 😂

TheTecknician · 27/07/2025 19:46

A Volvo 164 is another oldie I'd quite like. Dad had two company Volvos in the 1970s, a G-reg 145 then an M-reg 144. He could have had a 164 but would have had to contribute to the cost - so he didn't.

BMW Z3 M Coupe is a bit of a marmite car. To me the design is brilliant.

TheTecknician · 05/08/2025 21:03

I doubt anybody would desire one but who remembers the Invacar? Bright blue tricycle with, I think, a fibreglass body. They were taken off the road decades ago, thank goodness. They made the Reliant Robin look desirable.

An old defender.

Oh gosh, yes - the sort you could break a crowbar over and it wouldn't even leave a dent!

deeahgwitch · 05/08/2025 21:09

I loved the Jaguar XJ6 around 1999.

deeahgwitch · 05/08/2025 21:15

My friend’s Mum had a Citroen 2CV Charleston edition in black and burgundy. I loved that car. I never sat in it but dreamed of owning one.
Never happened ☹️

Abhannmor · 05/08/2025 21:21

A Talbot Avenger. With a Matt black roof 1978/9.
Or a Morris Minor .

Morris Minor with the wooden bits on the “estate” version (lol)

dreams are made of this

However, a MM was the first car I can remember my DM driving us to school in, in the 70s. Used to have to get the engine going with the choke lever, let it warm up in the snow before we chugged our way down the icy roads to school.

mumofsixfluffs · 05/08/2025 21:41

I already own her. A morris minor. Not everyone’s cup of tea but she has many childhood memories attached

RaraRachael · 05/08/2025 21:43

I loved the limited edition Tiger Avenger. My auntie had an orange one and they also came in yellow.

AvidJadeShaker · 05/08/2025 21:45

My first car a Fiat 126 bis but then I remember if I had passengers in the back it wouldn’t make it to steep hills.

My great Aunt had one late 50s. My first car memory too. Popular with priests and nuns here - as was the beetle. One of our neighbours had a Heinkel bubble car iirc. Air cooled engines were very common. Skodas , Renault Dauphines and NSU Prinz and Simcas. Haven't seen the last two in decades now.

Abhannmor · 06/08/2025 15:55

Ooh just remembered the Morris with wooden bits.was it the Traveller?

deeahgwitch · 06/08/2025 17:24

It’s not vintage but the Mercedes CLS pre 2018 was very sleek.

rightoguvnor · 06/08/2025 17:54

We often lament all the cars we had in the 80s (most of which would be worth tens of thousands now). A Capri, a Granada 2.8i, I had a Mk1 Escort, a Golf GTI.
but what is really like to pootle about in is a Hillman Imp. I love those ‘sit up and beg’ cars.

Tallisker · 06/08/2025 18:14

An original Fiat 500. So cute! Peugeot 205 GTI in Graphite was an early dream of bliss for me. Very nearly bought one. Old Citroen DS. E-type Jag.

TheTecknician · 06/08/2025 20:19

An old workmate had a slew of elderly cars, including a Hillman Imp and a left-hand drive Datsun Violet.

I wonder what the Avenger was avenging? What was the Hillman Hunter hunting?
