Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Through work I met Rowan Atkinson, he was very quiet and came across almost shy. It was a brief interaction but thought he was very sweet.

Another was Keith Flint from the Prodigy. Also a very quiet and sweet individual.

My brother (in a band) met Keith; chatted to him for half an hour. Said similar.
He was a very nice fella.

I once met Danny Boyle in the Selfridges Christmas card section, the year he had directed the OOC. He told me he had done a lot of work in my hometown (Edinburgh- as if I didn’t know). I told him I was a nurse and had been very jealous of the dancing nurses in the GOSH sequence, he was very concerned that it had been very difficult for them to juggle rehearsals around their shifts.
He caught me staring again as he was leaving (I was so star-struck) and gave me a little wave- it was a very sweet interaction.
I accidentally gave Imelda Staunton a dirty look on the Jubilee line, and in a separate incident accidentally alarmed Lin Manuel Miranda’s wife Vanessa Nadal in the Blackfriars underpass. In the unlikely event either of them frequent MN, I would like to apologise.

I’ll tell you who is bloody lovely - Jermaine Jackson. I was blown away by how decent, kind and nice he was. LaToya is mad as a box of frogs. I worked with them over a long weekend in Glasgow so feel I spent enough time with them to make a fair call. Oh and Amir Khan is an idiot.

No surprises there then!

FleurDeFleur · 22/07/2025 19:29

So, if Imelda Staunton was talking about you, @BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop , she'd think you were horrible because you gave her a dirty look for no reason!

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 22/07/2025 19:29

Kate Adie. Can't go into details, but without doubt the single most unpleasant person I've ever had to deal with.

Nobody tell that the Sir Dr Brian May out of Queen was mardy .
I will not believe you (and I'll blame his clogs for chafing his long slender feet )

You've not been set a challenge !

I’ve met Brian May and he’s a lovely bloke.

You thought the Alan Davies who got paralytic and bit a homeless person would be nice?

Well I obviously didn't know that then did I cleverclogs?

lifeonmars100 · 22/07/2025 19:30

I am not famous but if I was and you saw me yesterday you would have thought I was an ignorant bad tempered bastard. I was having an especially bad day and was effing and blinding as everything was going wrong hard on the heels of a rotten night's sleep and some bad news. If you bumped into me today now that i have had a rest and sorted some stuff out you would be under the impression that I was a laid back charmer. I guess my point is that as a human being we are all have good and bad days.

My dad reminded me of this one… Craig Quinnell. Won’t mean much to you unless you know 1990s rugby union. We were in Paparazzi Bar in Cardiff (doesn’t exist anymore, it was at the end of the Hayes) and it was massively busy on match day. I didn’t ever seem to be able to catch the attention of the bar staff (I was a bit more timid back then!) and then over the top of my head this booming voice said: “I think you’ve missed this girl out - what do you want love?” So I stammered out that I wanted a glass of red and a pint of John Smiths for my father. So he placed my order - PAID for my order! - and then came with me to deliver the drinks to the table and had a chat with my dad. What a legend.

nonevernotever · 22/07/2025 19:33

I think the only one of these I've spent any time with is prince Phillip who was absolutely lovely. He was volunteering as a steward at a carriage driving event, so we spent the day together in his land rover, and he gave me a lift back to my moped after!

I hate to say it, but Julia Donaldson. Grumpy AF.

No!!! that is upsetting

Prince Charles visited my med school about 25 years ago (presumably to open a ward of something), and he was surprisingly lovely to what was basically a bunch of silly teenagers on a walkabout afterwards.

We would have been about the same age as his kids, and presumably he was used to having groups of their friends mucking about at home. “Jovial” is probably the best way to describe it. Bit awkward, like your dad trying to make a joke, but very friendly and warm.

I am a republican and was fully expecting him to be a massive twat (this was post-Diana and all of the books and interviews and stories about having a special valet to put his toothpaste on the brush for him, none of which showed him in a good light). But he was much better than I expected. I am still against the institution though.

Charles visited my hospital about 15 years ago. He asked the CEO when all the hospital meals would be organic, cue lots of reassuring words and sycophantic smiles from the assembled grands fromages. The food then was cook chill, prepared in a giant outsourced kitchen in Wales. It still is. It made me reflect on how the Royals come to be so out of touch, if people rush to please them when they are out and about.

I'm so pleased you said Victoria Wood - everyone thinks she was wonderful.
And she was - bloody brilliant, Dinnerladies was , and still is an absolute classic.
But I met her and Una Stubbs on the same day.
VW was nothing short of bloody rude.
I was there to assist her for the day, so not asking for selfish or anything, and this was all day, not an hour long snapshot.
Unable Stubbs, on the other hand was lovely, as was Alan Ayckbourn.

Victoria Wood was a genius, but she never came across to me as a particularly easy to like person.

Haha, that’s true!! I was on my way back from a night shift so shattered and definitely at my most horrible. I kept thinking “I know that woman’s face” thinking it was a patient’s relative or something. She caught my eye at the very moment I twigged and for some reason my face contorted itself and i looked away just as she was getting off the tube. Mortified. I want to run up WH High St shouting “I’m sorry!”.
I also saw her and her husband Jim Carter walking holding hands while wearing cagoules in the pouring rain. That bit of London was a bit of a star-spotting haven.

Ah that's interesting about Prunella Scales. It was a total surprise as I for some reason expected her to be lovely.

I met both Prunella Scales and Timothy West in our local pub several times. They were both lovely - polite, friendly, had good chat and were interested in local gossip.

I’ve only met one famous person and spent time with them for an afternoon, and they were lovely: Graham Linehan.

No nasty celeb stories.

@summertimeinLondon yep agreed!!

About which one @Crikeyalmighty ?

bookwormcrazy · 22/07/2025 19:38

Nick Knowles! He lived near me and I saw him in a local pub. I didn’t try to speak to him or anything but he came across like a total twat. This was many years ago and I can’t bring myself to watch anything with him in.

lifeonmars100 · 22/07/2025 19:39

I met Danny Boyle and he was beyond lovely, very engaged and after I had got over being star struck I had a great chat with him about art and politics.

Kris Akabusi - just as he is on tv - funny, chatty, self-deprecating, just really nice.
Tom Allen - beautifully dressed, smelt divine, lovely manners, talked to everyone. Linked arms with me to walk and talk!
Adrian Chiles - awful rude man.
John Craven - just lovely, chatted away to any one who approached him, brilliant with kids. His daughter could & should learn from him… thoroughly unpleasant sneering woman.
Lady Tanni Grey-Thompson - lovely lady, charming, plenty of stories to tell, wished she was my bestie, I loved her!

Who's John Craven's daughter?
Or do you mean she was with him, and was rude?

i haven’t met too many celebrities but the reverse of the Op, I stood by Eric Cantona on a very long, unpleasant train journey. Not too long after his conviction and ban.
i expected him to be a complete twat after all the publicity and actually wouldn’t have blamed him in these circumstances (train was packed after several cancellations, it was boiling hot) but actually he was a complete gent. Stood up without complaint the whole journey and was polite and friendly to everybody who approached him for autographs.

I say this as a Liverpool fan so have no love for Eric but he does come across very well in interviews. The subjects he talks about, for example social media being bad for society and human interaction, his love of nature, and explaining why he said his phrase ("when the seagulls follow the trawler".. which he said was nonsense and he only did so as he didn't want to say anything), he is likeable.
