Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Where did you meet them?

It was just at a record store signing in the very early days.

Gethin Jones, Zoe Ball, Joan Bakewell, Bonnie Tyler, Tony Bennett, Jeanette Manrara, all absolutely lovely. Aled Jones a bit sleazy. Russell Watson a bit up himself, as was Nick Knowles. Darcey Bussell not unpleasant but a bit standoffish. Huw Edwards lovely, super smart, kind, funny and gossipy. (This was a few years ago though.)
Also had brief phone conversations with Angela Rippon and Robert Winston, both perfectly nice.

I was devastated about Huw. My son knew he was the mystery malefactor before the storm broke and I refused to believe him.

Never quite got over it.

I have only positive comments about two contrasting experiences for me and DH when we were teens, one of piety and the other of alcoholic indulgence....

Desmond Tutu was a curate at DH's church (until he left to become Dean in Jo'burg and then Bishop of Lesotho when DH was about 15) and was as wise and lovely as you would expect.

I, on the other hand, shared rather a lot of a bottle of vodka with John Du Prez backstage at some nightclub in Purfleet when he was playing with Modern Romance. I was probably 16 at the time and was acting as navigator for my ex who worked for a music management co and had just passed his driving test. The rest of the band were having a cheerful melee over mirrors and hairspray, ex was doing whatever management did somewhere, and John and I just sat in the corner drinking and chatting. He was an absolute gent. It was only later I realised he was a composer and involved with Monty Python and music for all sorts of other films!

Totally outing (as I’m always telling this story!) so will name change sharpish! When I was b young , the author Frederick Forsyth came to dinner and drinks at my house several times and my father had a signed colllection of his books. A couple of years ago I went to hear FF talk at a literary festival- and he talked about his time in X and the awful people there that he’d been obliged to socialise with and ‘I even went to their houses for drinks and dinner!’

I was gobsmacked first then furious. I put up my hand to ask a question but didn’t get picked and then queued up for an hour outside to meet him, but he packed up and left before I got to the end of the line.

Both he and my father are dead now, but I suppose the lesson is to be careful what you say as it’s a very, very small world.

That was awful of him, unless your parents were covert Nazis or devil worshippers, which I assume they weren’t!

This is an interesting post because you often hear or read (in the papers or in memoirs) of well-known people being rude about members of the public, or the people who live in a locality, and I always think - how bloody rude, especially if those people recognise themselves.

A definite sign someone’s too big for their boots, once they think of themselves as above ‘ ordinary people’.

Nope - boring normal people- no nazis or satanists rattling in the cupboards.

Gymnopediegivesmethewillies · 23/07/2025 13:42

Friend books ‘turns’ for a local (and great) venue. He said Jimmy Carr is the nicest gentleman, turns up by himself, no airs and graces, very polite.

He said Ade Edmundsen is the rudest.

Julie Hesmondhalgh in the bar after her one-woman play. Absolutely lovely lady.

Alan Davies, sat next to him across the aisle on a plane once, quite a while ago. He was very sneery and took the mick out of me reading to my daughter. I didn't take to him and was surprised as I thought he would be nice in real life.

I got a free ticket to his comedy tour, it was rubbish and I left at the interval. From his so called funny anecdotes I can welll believe he’s a cock.

To add to the Jimmy Carr survey I used to run into him frequently, we used the same coffee shop. He was quiet and polite and held doors open for people. This was before his enhancements though.

Some people don’t let fame go to their heads - good to know Julie us as nice as she seems.

After he died the papers were full of anecdotes about what a gent he was, but that’s a pretty shitty thing to do.

DS was introduced to Huw Edwards at a social event just before the scandal broke. Said he was really nice and a good laugh, although he had no idea who he was at the time.

@beguilingeyes - er - see my post I’ve just made - great example of this.

I can understand people, especially women,. being wary.of.meeting some of the more extreme 'fans', but this woman is horrible to people/musicians she's working with. A bully.

I mean she was at work so nobody bothered her but she seemed happy and pleasant enough to wave,

I knew Pinky and Perky quite well when I worked at ITV in 1970-72. I was hired as their "minder" briefly at BBC and retained the job for a while when they switched channels.

You'd think they'd be cute and lovable but in real life they were VERY tiresome, always arguing, shouty, potty-mouthed and very violent, it could be quite frightening.

They often got into fights with other puppets (in their BBC days they actually set fire to Andy Pandy, whose face melted and had to be replaced). I remember having to drag them off a very battered Scott Tracy fromThunderbirds at a studio party.

I think in the end they were suffocated in their sleep by Sooty.

Sooty was questioned by the police as a suspect in the Pinky and Perky case but he exercised his right to remain silent.

I should be on the telly, you know.

Crikeyalmighty · 23/07/2025 14:14

@beguilingeyes I know someone who said the same thing-

Me neither 😔

He was just such a normal, down to earth but super intelligent and charismatic person. Way too savvy and switched on to take such stupid risks. And when I knew him, he was always talking about his wife and children.

Crikeyalmighty · 23/07/2025 14:19

Ah another one I remember- Hugh Laurie lives over road from my son and came out and helped him out when he was having problems with his car starting - if I can say by the way my son lives in an average flat share, Not some multi million mansion. Son said he was really nice.

Ha ha. I thought this was well known. I used to work at the BBC and he was often in the local after work pub being lecherous and not particularly nice.

I'm glad you said this. I'd have hated to think she wasn't nice. She also runs a charity called 500 acts of kindness. It's worth checking out.

Showing my age here, but I met and bought a drink for Dean Martin. He was charm personified. Very very old at the time but still had that old Hollywood aura. It’s one of my most precious memories ❤️

blackheartsgirl · 23/07/2025 14:51

Ricky Tomlinson

lived locally to me for a while and a lovely guy if a bit eccentric.

he once helped me back my car out of B and Q as he’d parked really awkwardly next to me in a van that his son was driving. He was so lovely and funny and we had a bit of a giggle.

Also met Paul Burrell in the queue at Dunelm, he was nice if a bit reserved. We had a chat about the weather 😂

Ive also met Brian Blessed at
comic con, so lovely, warm and funny

oh just added to add that I’ve confused myself lol, asking for celebs that aren’t that nice, it’s been a long day. 🙈

dint think I’ve met anyone horrible, my mum is though, jimmy tarbuck, said he was rude obnoxious and arrogant

tortiecat · 23/07/2025 14:52

I haven’t read the whole thread but I met Jimmy Carr after a show once and he was friendly, kind and apparently genuinely interested in what I had to say.

Also a friend met Peter Andre at a cafe and said he was absolutely lovely and very nice to her little boy. I used to live close to Katie Price on the other hand and she frequently cut me - and lots of others - up on the roads in her pink Range Rover.

Well you sound a delight!

Reminder: the thread is about famous people WHOM YOU’VE ACTUALLY MET or someone you know who’s met them.

Right back at you. Forgot your sense of humour or was you to focused on feeling offended. I am giving you a clue on how old I am I went to the same school as Michelle Ryan from EastEnders. I won't say what class we was in together in case anyone recognises me. She was lovely at school.

CapybaraParty · 23/07/2025 15:08

Met a few through work but these are standouts.

Ant and Dec were always really nice. Ant was a bit more reserved and shy and could come off as miserable sometimes but was always nice enough to me. Dec was a lot friendlier, found him warm, engaging and kind and friendly. Was nice to my son once too, he has additional needs and isn't the easiest to talk to but he was patient and friendly.

Michael Rosen was also very patient with my son and had a lovely conversation with him about his cats. Was also nice and friendly whenever I dealt with him.

Have heard mixed things about Johnathan Ross but he stands out as someone who was consistently really nice too but obviously not discrediting others experiences.

Worked as a waitress at uni and served a table that included Anthony Head, table was no bother, he was polite and friendly and they left a very good tip!

Randomly ended up talking to two members of Kneecap at a festival a couple of weeks ago, didn't really know much about them apart from negative bits I've seen in the media but found them articulate, quick witted and far smarter than I thought they'd be. Was pleasantly surprised!
