Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Share your tales!

Not a twat but met Jonathan Ross briefly at my workplace when I was a teenager, he was lovely.

No connection to me, but I did like the story about Roger Moore pretending to be undercover to a small boy who thought he was James Bond. On meeting the boy as a grown man years later, and being reminded of the story, he was happy to keep up the pretence! He seems like he was a good egg.

A certain ex presenter, total lech, should be in prison

Alas, it’s well known among people who work in the theatre world that Michael Sheen is an absolute nightmare.

personally: Emma Watson. No understatement to say I hated her, and I didn’t meet her as “a celeb” either. This was when she was doing her year “abroad” in Oxford (her home town, actually…). She was an up-herself, arrogant posh bitch.

Eric1964 · 22/07/2025 22:00

Long time ago, I met Pete Shelley. Hung out with him at his hotel for a bit and he bought me a G&T. It was early 90s and I can't remember much because I was star-struck, but I'm pretty sure he was a nice guy. He was well-known for acknowledging a debt to his fans.

I once had a nice chat with Johnny Vaughan. Pleasant and friendly guy. As we parted, he stuck his hand out to shake hands but I'd already committed myself to walking away, and left him hanging. I've tried to apologise but he doesn't answer my texts.

WilfredsPies · 22/07/2025 22:00

DH’s nan had a row with Max Boyce after he was very rude to DH’s aunt. He also tried it on with the mum of one of DH’s friends and got quite sniffy when she knocked him back. Gareth Edwards (rugby and did a tv show with his wife) was very rude. And Katie McGrath from Merlin wasn’t very nice although I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Max Boyce and Gareth Edward’s, however, remain persona non grata in our house. 😄 Big Daddy was also horrible to MiL when she was a child (again, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt here) but Giant Haystacks was apparently delightful. Yes, I move in those circles!

Isla Fisher, Simon Brodkin and Brian May were all really lovely. Especially Isla Fisher who was very kind to me when I had a stinking cough and cold.

A friend of mine dated Steve Coogan. I cannot put into words how disgustingly vile her is.

Can you tell us more?

HarrietBond · 22/07/2025 22:05

There’s a lot on the internet about Steve Coogan’s alleged shortcomings as a boyfriend.

Diane Morgan (I think?) once spoke about being invited onto the set of the Victoria Wood Show by a friend who was in the cast, and she was briefly introduced to Victoria and was really starstruck and started gushing about how VW had been her childhood hero and inspiration to get into comedy - and Victoria cut her dead. Literally looked straight through her and acted like she hadn’t spoken and wasn’t in the room. Diane was totally mortified.

When I mentioned this on a previous thread, loads of people rushed to defend Victoria Wood - “She was famously shy”; “She was working”; “She was under a lot of pressure and responsible for the whole show”. Yeah … but even given all that, she was still a tiny bit of a cunt, wasn’t she?

I still love Victoria Wood, but that pops into my head every time I watch her.

I have never met her but I didn't think she was funny at all, I was a child when she was on TV so maybe I just didn't get it but I dreaded my Mum or Dad changing the channel to watch her stuff. I feel like she exaggerated her accent and the content was actually not funny, it qas all about the accent.

Craftysue · 22/07/2025 22:07

My daughter and I met Michael Morpurgo - he was giving out prizes for a primary school competition. He was a lovely man - spent ages talking to each child and posed for lots of photos.

I hate to say it, but Julia Donaldson. Grumpy AF.

i ve met her several times, through her lovely husband, across the years... very grumpy indeed.

RelocatingtoFrance · 22/07/2025 22:10

I worked briefly with Michael Moseley - lovely, chatty, a bit gossipy, and Jay Reno - not at all friendly, quite full of himself

ivyleafgeranium · 22/07/2025 22:11

I’ve got a bad word to say about Princess Anne. Had to meet her for work thing. I didn’t want to be there but had no choice. She was fine with people she was interested in but it seemed like she was trying to prove that she was independent. Rude and dismissive to other people. Wouldn’t stick to the schedule etc. I get that- it must be boring for her -but she needs to remember that it’s also boring for the people forced to be polite and meet her. It’s not some great treat to meet a Royal.
Harry Kane was lovely (he was picking his dog up from the vet!).
Alan Rickman sent me a lovely letter but maybe it’s easier to be nice in writing!
Patsy Palmer was very friendly.
Marian Keyes is very warm and engaged. Really nice.

TheRealBossMama · 22/07/2025 22:11

TinkerbellStarbright · 22/07/2025 16:59

Julie Walters is an absolute darling and so friendly.
Johnny Depp is very humble, softly spoken and kind!
Ant and Dec and Peter Andre - all come across lively and friendly and bubbly and were all twats.

I used to work in radio and socialised with Ant & Dec on three separate occasions, in their PJ & Duncan days. They were lovely! Maybe they were having a bad day when you met them @TinkerbellStarbright?

The lead singer of Let Loose at the same gig was a bit of an arse and refused to sign anything for the fans. I'd promised a sweet girl his autograph as I was working backstage, so rather than disappoint her, I signed it as him and brought it back to her (luckily they've disappeared and his signature is probably worth £-0.27p)

Most stars I've met have been lovely... and I've met a lot! Notable lovely people:

I did work experience in the 80s at Red Tape Recording Studios and Phil Oakey (Human League) was SO lovely and introduced himself to ME at a party (like I didn't know, I was 17!!!). Joanne and Suzanne (their backing singers) always sneered down their nose at me though.

The worst I could say was Bruno Brookes got a bit 'handsy' at a party and slid his hand onto my thigh - I quickly got up and made my excuses!

Robbie Williams was a VERY cheeky chappy and flirted with me (!) - it was the mid 90s, he was just out of Take That and promoting his first single, 'Freedom'.

Early 2000s, I looked after boy band Blue when they played Wembley one night. I knocked on the door with the towels they'd asked for, and they said to come in. They were all stood around in their underpants - eeek!!! Next day, they'd been on the breakfast show and were leaving, as I was coming into work. The lift door opened and Duncan (who I fancied, and hadn't come out as gay at the time) was cold and ignored me, despite the pants incident! Lee, though, was very sweet and we had a little chat.

Jarvis Cocker was soooo lovely when, heavily pregnant, I stalked him slightly to get on the same tube carriage bumped into him and we had a little chat about Sheffield (I went to school there) and I wouldn't sit down even though a chair came up and he waved me towards it, because I just wanted to stand near him!

Seen Duran Duran several times but was once on the front row for 'An Audience With' on ITV. In the breaks, John Taylor was SO lovely and friendly chatting to fans. I just could NOT go there - I was so star struck despite being in my 40s! But Simon Le Bon ignored the fans, seemed really irritable, and I was glad I hadn't fancied him as a teen!

Meanwhile I got asked out by the man who plays Scotch-egg-eating Keith out of The Office (UK). He was perfectly lovely and polite (came to my boss' leaving do). I pretended I had a boyfriend to let him down gently!

The most famous person I met was Quentin Tarantino - an enthusiastic geeky soul, just how you'd imagine! And very tall! We chatted for ages at a party and he was like a big excitable puppy to be in London.

Had a lovely chat with Simon Pegg at the same party. Very cute and funny. Little crush there.

My boys laugh, "MUMMY! Who HAVEN'T you met?!".

Sorry for the really long reminisce - I really enjoyed thinking back over my career. It's really fecking boring by comparison, now - having kids can do that - but GOD I had a BALL!!!

Middlemarch123 · 22/07/2025 22:12

Met Peter Davison when he was Dr Who in the eighties, booked him for PR when I worked in the industry. Had a huge crush on him since his Tristan days in All Creatures Great and Small (the original series). He was charm personified, unassuming and very genuine.

Met Bradley Walsh socially when he regularly visited family near where I lived at the time. Just lovely, very natural.

My best friend used to work with Vanessa Phelps in the 80s, and she was an absolute nightmare.

lifeonmars100 · 22/07/2025 22:12

One of my friends met David Bowie, said he was totally charming, seemed genuinely interested in what she did for a living and was gorgeous to look at. She has a photo of him with his arm around her, and his smile is almost as radiant as hers!

QueenofLouisiana · 22/07/2025 22:12

Max Hastings- lovely, lots of time for teen DS who was fan-boying all over him at a book launch. Talked through a lot of his research, not at all patronising, just wanted to chat about a subject of mutual fascination.

Prince William- met him while he was flying for the air ambulance. You’d hardly have known it was him if you weren’t standing opposite him (I was also working, supporting the ambulance in a practical situation). He hid away to avoid a circus developing when locals appeared to see what was happening. Lovely, practical, determined to just do his job.

I have come across (not exactly ‘met’) Neil Tennant twice, in unrelated work settings, and he was very unassuming, polite, humble and lovely. I love the Pet Shop Boys so I’m pleased about this!

I was a good friend with his cousin, sadly we lost touch when he moved pre mobile phobes, and he said that Neil was never an arshole even in the early days when it is almost expected to be a dickhead until you grow up a bit. Sadly some celebs dont get the memo about that!

Worst one I knew was Letitia Dean. Was doing a PA at a local even my father was managing. He was hands on, did dirty work as well as the whole project management. She knew him by name only. Treated him like absolute dirt when she didnt know who he was, and barely better when she realised it was him who was paying her. She arrived late, left early and my father made sure that she was paid to the minute as luckily the contract specified "by the hour or part therof" and her four hour booking had her there for slightly less than two hours! This was some years ago though during her EE hiatus, one hopes she has improved since then!

I cant tell the story as it isnt mine to tell and it would be very very outing to certain people close to me but Elliot Kennedy is a very kind man. I have no idea what he is like professionally as I am sure he has to be a bit cut throat in his industry but he has shown exceptional kindness and love to people that he didnt need to show that to. Went over and above. I have not actually met him I know that what he did meant a great deal to the relatvies of mine that he did it for.

Timeforaname · 22/07/2025 22:16

I used to work in south London where a few famouses lived.

Pro Green was well known, mainly because everyone stopped to chat to his dog and would realise later who the human attached was.

Shaun Dooley. Lovely man, always said hello and an acknowledgment of he had time.

David Haig, often seen around. Another lovely man.

fred siriex now….no time for that man at all.

DevonDonnie · 22/07/2025 22:16

I’ve met a few. Amy Winehouse was the nicest. At the Stables in Camden- was a lock in and I accidentally got locked in with my friend as they’d sent everyone out while we were drunk in the toilets. Ended up hanging out with her and her friends. She was so sweet. Helping all of the staff clean up and just charming. Simon Cowell, met him and katy Perry and dizzy rascal and James cordon and Aussie tennis player Mark Phillipousis at an event. Simon was charming, mark was lovely, dizzy was nice, James was nice to be fair, not a fan though from his behaviour since.

StripedPillowcase · 22/07/2025 22:16

I read these threads to see if there's anyone I've worked with - not so far this time. Haven't heard of quite a lot of those mentioned, but I'm not very up to date with reality TV or pop music or influencers.

I've worked with Ashley Banjo and Diversity twice; contracts of several weeks both times, so not one-off meetings. They're all lovely; they work really hard, and Ashley is a real perfectionist, but he's their choreographer and it's his 'brand', so understandable. The second time I worked with them, they all remembered me and were happy to work with me again.

Also worked with Faye Tozer from Steps, same sort of contract, who is also lovely, and Harriet Thorpe, who is now in Eastenders, but when I worked with her was most famous for being a minor character in Ab Fab. She thought she was more famous than she was - not in a nasty way, but just expecting the celeb treatment from everyone.

My DD met William when she was a nurse and he was flying for Air Ambulance. She said he was lovely, really unassuming and just one of the crew. She said he had a gorgeous bum!

Met Floella Benjamin on a bus in Barbados. She was very chatty, told us some local history and have us directions when we got off. Lovely lady.

My brother met her recently. Said she was very nice, which I’m glad about.

That’s no secret, though. Frank O’Connor once saw George Yeats beg WB to discipline the children when they were particularly out of hand. He said ‘Young pups are prone to bark and bite’ and left the room.

I can easily believe he was nasty about your granny’s violins playing!

He had virtually no relationship with his own son it seems.
