What water do you drink at home?

What water do you drink at home? Do you buy bottled water? Do you have a filter system? Do you have water delivery arranged?
With two active boys I noticed that lately we go through racks of bottled water and looking to change to either water filter like virgin or water2 or get a water dispenser. I haven’t done any research yet on any filters but worry if we install any it wouldn’t change how tap water tastes and we will still need to buy bottles.
Has anyone installed filter and happy with it after at least a year of use?

Tap water. Bottled water banned in this house because of plastic waste.

OhNoMyChocMelted · 22/07/2025 13:15

Bottled. Can't stand the smell of chlorine in tap water. And yes I've tried leaving it out to settle.

Ha ha. Dad used to call it that😂

Becs258 · 22/07/2025 13:17

Tap too, except for DS who has severe ocd and can only drink bottled water. I hate plastic waste (I do recycle obviously), but it’s that or he stops drinking completely.

yakkity · 22/07/2025 13:17

Tap. And even when out at a cafe I ask for tap. They have carafes they bring to the table. It’s far past the time people stoped drinking bottled unless in emergencies or caught short

Tap

Tap. I’m in Scotland so it’s perfect.

Yes! Though ours is from a spring as we are rural, but the stuff at friends houses is amazing too!

Hatty65 · 22/07/2025 13:21

It had genuinely never occurred to me that there are people who BUY water in bottles to drink at home, when they could simply turn on the tap and pour themselves a drink. Why on earth would you?

Ciri · 22/07/2025 13:25

We have a water filter built into our fridge but the water itself just comes out of the pipes like the tap water.

Buying bottled water is horrendous for the environment and for your purse.

I drink tap water but would love a water filter. I know someone who is blind in one eye from a parasite found in UK tap water 🤢

Acanthamoeba if that's what you're referencing is also found in fresh water, swimming pools, soil, dust and wait for it...air.

ana7887 · 22/07/2025 13:30

Really surprised to see not many people have filter systems. I was hoping to get more feedback on those.

we used to drink tap water too and it was fine, but since having children we started buying bottled water thinking it’s better quality. I can taste the difference to be honest, but I want to find a way to have same quality/taste and reduce waste/cost.
With tap water I am worried about parasites and chlorine.

Yes, I am referring to Acanthamoeba. Having supported my friend through the 18 months of hell she went through, taking her to appointments at Moorfields and speaking to consultants, the vast majority of cases come via UK tap water (not fresh water, sea, soil, the air etc). Cases of AK are on the rise, and once thought a rare disease is becoming far more common. The UK is seeing disproportionately more cases than the rest of the developed world, mainly due to the way we store our water. Most people are resistant to these parasites, but some people do get infected.

LavenderBlue19 · 22/07/2025 13:35

Tap water is not worse quality than bottled, that's a weird thing to think. Of course it tastes different, but that doesn't mean it's worse.

I'm assuming you're in the UK, of course. If you're not, I have no idea what your tap water is like. But in the UK, tap water is perfectly safe to drink. It does taste vastly different in different places. The water from our tap in Essex is lovely.

I live in Glastonbury so I fill up big containers of White Springs water. It's an underground pure water spring. There is a tap outside the well so everyone in town helps themselves. It's free. There is a tap for the separate red spring at Chalice Well on the other side of the road. That spring is full of iron so it keeps my chronic anaemia in check.
The cats drink the spring water too.

Pure Yorkshire Tap

Sandandsea123 · 22/07/2025 13:44

Tap water, live in a really soft water area so it tastes great. I do keep it in the fridge though or add ice as I like it really cold

xMonochromeRainbowx · 22/07/2025 13:45

Me and the kids drink tap water, maybe I'm weird but I literally can't tell the difference between tap and bottled water.

DH drinks bottled as he says tap 'tastes disgusting' but he'll still have it in squash.

Are you in the UK? If so tap water is usually better quality then bottled water. It’s better for your children to drink tap water, bottled water has lots of microplastics in which is damaging.

Gettingbysomehow · 22/07/2025 13:55

Does no one else drink local spring water? I store mine in big glass bottles under the stairs. I don't like plastic.

Alwaysyou · 22/07/2025 13:57

I just keep a jug of tap water in the fridge.

whohasthetime · 22/07/2025 14:10

Tap. Put in a glass Kilner bottle in the fridge.

not killed me yet.

FourBlackCats · 22/07/2025 14:11

We have a Quooker tap that also does filtered drinking water. If we didn’t have that, I’d just drink tap (always specifically ask for tap in cafes/restaurants).
