@ButteredRadish No, not Coventry. I believe Coventry cathedral was destroyed by bombing, whereas ours wasn't.

I am stumped by yours but refuse to Google it. Will keep thinking.

We have a largely 11th century cathedral with the longest uninterrupted nave in the world and two towers. The city was badly damaged in the Baedeker bombings of WW2 but the cathedral was largely unscathed. Our city was a hub for the wool trade in medieval times. We have a highly rated university and hospital.

From a high building in the centre of the city it is possible to see fields in all directions.

We are at the end of a motorway.

We have everything a bigger city has, but on a smaller scale. Theatres, cinemas, restaurants, markets.

We aren't very industrial, most of our employment is in the service sector.

Tommy Cooper grew up here, Rabbi Lionel Blue was sent here during the war, and JK Rowling went to university here.

Durham?

DilemmaDelilah · 21/07/2025 08:40

@mambojambodothetango No, Durham isn't anywhere near a motorway.

If it helps, the reason why it was a hub for wool in medieval times was because it was a port in those days, but isn't now. Weirs were built on the river in the 13th century which restricted ship traffic, but a canal was built to combat this, and it remained a thriving port well into the 19th century. The dock scenes in The Onedin Line television series were filmed here.

Floella Benjamin was Chancellor of the university for ten years.

I've got it now but cheated by Googling otherwise I wouldn't have been able to concentrate on work this morning! I won't spoil it for others though.

DilemmaDelilah · 21/07/2025 08:56

@mambojambodothetango thank goodness for that! I thought I was going to have to give you this clue...

Chris Martin from Coldplay was born here and his parents still live very close by.

Laska2Meryls · 21/07/2025 09:00

Easy.. Wigan.
You also had a casino which didn't have gambling for many years.

I've only lived here for 3 years so had no idea about that one

In my town we call a pie in a barm cake (bap, bread roll or tea cake) a kebab.

We also have a pier but no sea or ocean.
