How to pronounce Jargon?

Helladelinquent · 18/07/2025 11:01

Was on a phone call recently with someone and the phrase ‘legal jargon’ came up. I pronounced it jar-gon and he pronounced it yar-gon.
I was certain about my pronunciation but as I will probably end up on a call with him again and the phrase might come up again I’m wondering if I’m right??

Is he British? I've never heard it pronounced yargon!

RomeoMcFlourish · 18/07/2025 11:06

I think that you’re correct.

toohottofunction1234 · 18/07/2025 11:06

Jar-gon is how I’d pronounce it as well! I’ve never heard it any other way

Bluevelvetsofa · 18/07/2025 11:07

You’re correct!

mylittleyumyum · 18/07/2025 11:33

He sounds like a pretentious twat

TokyoSushi · 18/07/2025 11:35

Jar! Definitely!

TheCurious0range · 18/07/2025 11:36

Yargon 😂

I miss the laughing reaction

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/07/2025 11:42

Jar as in jam jar.

I wonder whether he’s never actually heard it pronounced before, though that does seem unlikely. Not like my Dbro at maybe 6, who’d come out with gems he’d only ever seen in print, ‘I know it was you, so you needn’t denny it!’ 😂

underthelights · 18/07/2025 11:47

Jargon as you pronounce it op.
phone call guy is a nob

ErrolTheDragon · 18/07/2025 11:55

Did he do it more than once? No obvious speech impediment?
I’m pretty sure my manager Jürgen pronounces ‘jargon’ with a J not a Y sound though it might be a little softened with his German accent.

MyMilchick · 18/07/2025 11:59

Jar-gon definitely. never heard it pronounced any other way

SerendipityJane · 18/07/2025 12:01

Sounds like an "AI" thing. There are shed loads of YouTube "videos" now appearing which are basically an "AI" voice reading out a story they have cobbled together from various places.

CurlewKate · 18/07/2025 12:01

Is he a native English speaker?

Helladelinquent · 18/07/2025 12:03

All involved in the call are Irish. I was just wondering because he’s better educated than I am and he repeated it several times.

His education seems to have failed him on this point.

WirralCyrille · 18/07/2025 12:28

Is he a pirate?

Ddakji · 18/07/2025 12:32

Oh dear. Did he say yourself or myself when he meant you or me as well?

You win the Internet today! 😂😂

LittleRobins · 18/07/2025 12:52

Oh thank goodness. From the title I was worried this was going to belong in the baby names section!

Mauro711 · 18/07/2025 13:01

It sounds like his pronounciation is a little closer to the original French pronunciation but in the UK I have only ever heard jar-gon too.

LumpyandBumps · 18/07/2025 13:14

Maybe he was yust yoking

Helladelinquent · 18/07/2025 13:14
