Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

Actually really posh people tend not to call their children Araminta and Tarquin. They are more likely to go for really traditional royal names - Elizabeth Mary Charlotte Philippa Henry Edward Robert etc etc or rather odd family names eg Jocelyn (for a boy) Aubrey etc Cordelias and Ptolemies are usually the offspring of pretentious middle class professionals

I have apprentices at work called Sebastian, Xavier and Atticus. Nine of them are posh or went to a private school. They are just normal names to me to be honest.

Jayden is a strange one though. Where we live, it does have the ‘chav’ connotation. My son has a lovely friend from New Zealand called Jayden and when they first got to know him, they all really took the piss out of him because of his name. They all just call him Jay now. Not sure if it’s a common name in New Zealand though.

FairKoala · 14/07/2025 20:25

St John

Mademetoxic · 14/07/2025 20:28

Arabella is a horrible name. Certainly not 'posh'

Falcon would be such a cool name 😄

"My name is Smith, Falcon Smith"

My ex vetoed the name Gabriel if we had a son. In the end, I had 3 daughters.

Pandora is quite posh 😁

Just remembered that my mum was at university with a girl called Fidelis! Now that’s pretty posh!

I know a Fidelis, she works in Tesco

Surely Marley and Me? As in the dog!

Oh, yes!

Beetlebumz · 14/07/2025 20:31

Galahad! As in sir Galahad of the round table. Did make me chuckle.

A friend called her daughter Araminta after she read the name in a book as a child. She’s 20 years old and known as Minty. They aren’t posh at all.

Moondial ?

Jonty, Monty, Rupert, Cordelia, Hermione, Pandora.

See names are so subjective because I work in schools in a north east town that has a reputation for being working class and poor and some of the ‘most challenging’ kids I’ve had over the years have been called Fox, Rupert, Annabella, Sebastian and Ophelia

Pandora is quite posh 😁

Hmm. I'm not anyone who knows the mythical association would use it. Pretty name though, but so is Candida 😀

I agree the solid old money types go for something extravagantly feminine for their girls - then nickname them something like Bogroll

🤣

I know a Fidelis, she works in Tesco

I know a couple of kids from west African heritage called Fidelis
loads have old old biblical names like Jethro, Esther, Zilpah, Dorcas, Abel - defo not posh but in a very different demographic and area quite popular with the trendy name crowd

LancashireButterPie · 14/07/2025 20:11

What on earth is wrong with Gabriel?

He said it was too 'girly' and he'd get beaten up a lot 🙄

It's a complete mystery why he's now my ex

Well shows how out of touch I am then! So by that revelation, this thread is probably irrelevant. I guess with the rise of social media, internet etc. people of all backgrounds want to increasingly feel special and have more unique names for their kids and now have the ability to search instantly at the touch of a button for names moments ago unknown to them!

Brilliant 😂😂

Jocasta Eliza Hepzibah Woodpigeon-Downton …. Shall be known as Tittie

I wouldn't necessarily go straight to the myth and it doesn’t sound like a medical condition, but I think it has a air of poshness to it, eg Lady Pandora
