Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

They're not posh, just the Nouveau riche.

The poshest names I've heard are the Royals. Elizabeth, Alexandra, Victoria, Alice, George, Louis, William, Henry, Edward, Charles.

Names like Tarquin arent posh theyre stupid.

Comedycook · 14/07/2025 09:09

I did raise an eyebrow when I heard a mother called out for her DS in a museum...."Horatio".

Personally I dislike any names which denote social class whether that's upper or lower classes. I like names which could be used in the royal family but which also wouldn't stand out on a council estate.

OP how would you feel if you saw a thread about "chav" names? Cos they are stereotypical "posh" names they are fair game? Pretty sure you wouldn't be happy if I said "let's hear the chaviest names at a school"?

I agree. In my family there is one whose name is considered posh and one whose name is considered chavvy. Same family, neither posh nor chavvy. It's ridiculous to stereotype in this way.

Sdpbody · 14/07/2025 09:15

I actually love the name Ottilie though! Even though it is fairly posh.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 14/07/2025 09:20

Posh names =/= posh people.

Aristocratic names would be the Alexander, Charlotte, Elizabeth etc…

Which is not what this thread is about.

Jago and Jonty aren’t posh names though. In my head for boys it would be Hector, Benedict, Maxwell (not shortened) Girls names would have a shorter version (often bearing no resemblance to the name): Apple, Belsie, Lettice, Fish…

ruethewhirl · 14/07/2025 09:21

I recently came across a Tristram - first time I've ever encountered the name outside of George and Mildred! 😄

SmellsLikeTippex · 14/07/2025 09:22

Honestly, the most UC people I know named their children entirely ordinary things that wouldn’t raise an eyebrow on Mn. I know two ‘Honorables’ (I mean, they don’t use it, but they’re technically entitled to as the daughter and younger son of (I think) a viscount and an earl), and they’re called Martha and Anthony.

The children of the most UC people I know of my generation (children now aged between early teens and mid-20s) are called things like Mimi, Tobias, Mary, Elodie and Max.

I think that people are confusing ‘posh’ and monied.
