Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

Well shows how out of touch I am then! So by that revelation, this thread is probably irrelevant. I guess with the rise of social media, internet etc. people of all backgrounds want to increasingly feel special and have more unique names for their kids and now have the ability to search instantly at the touch of a button for names moments ago unknown to them!

Edited

Yeah I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. If I recall Fox was from a family of several where they all had to have an X in their name for some reason, think he had a sister called Jaxxie or something similar. And Ophelia was just mum googling an alternative to Olivia of which there were a few too many that year. With instagram being so profiling and some of the biggest influencers out there currently’s kids named Koazy, Bambi, Summit, Dingo etc the list goes on, these names when you see them and hear them on social media over and over don’t seem ‘weird’ anymore

I know how to pronounce Persephone but always read it (in my head) as Percy-Phone.

Absolutely, quirky names I think were once the preserve primarily of the rich and famous (Apple, Blue Ivy, Bear, Stormi to name a few) and classical, posh generally linked to the middle class and upwards but now there’s a definite blurring of all that resulting in those almost alien sounding names to our present ears that you mentioned, but yes in time they won’t be questioned. In fact they are so prevalent now I imagine that most teachers don’t bat any eyelid and very soon that same indifference will trickle down to the rest of us!

scritter · 14/07/2025 20:59

My family and DH's family tick the old-style posh boxes of MN. There are three of the names on this thread in the immediate lot, but mostly quite plain names along the lines of Emma/George etc.

I'm a bit surprised by some of the names on this list!

dontcomeatme · 14/07/2025 09:41

Me too 😅

And me 🤣

scritter · 14/07/2025 21:00

...and yes, a couple of family names handed down over the generations that are very unusual, but still get dusted off!

5128gap · 14/07/2025 21:03

If they're putting a Y in Jago, then their poshness might be slipping a little.

Also Penny-lope.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 14/07/2025 21:11

So I've read the whole thread and am delighted that both my children's names appear. As well as my own. DH's does not however so he may get promoted to STBXH and replaced with a man with a more distinguished first name. And there is plenty of name inspiration should I choose to grow the brood! 🤣

@Gonners and Her-me-own as I read in the first however many HP books until the movie came out and corrected me!

Sao-eer-see is another one. Saying that there's always some sort of misunderstanding with nearly everything. I work with a Katie and an Anne and they're regularly called Kathy or Catty and Annie!

Names aren’t really an indication of ‘class’ (such as it exists) any more - not since the rise of the internet and ability to search for a greater variety of names.

I teach at a pretty standard middle class village primary in Sussex, and we have names such as Arabella, Tabitha and Hugo mixed in with names like Darcie-Lou, Cheryl-Mae and Jaxxson. I’ve learnt not to make assumptions about families based on how they name their children - I’ve been surprised on more than one occasion.

Mademetoxic · 14/07/2025 20:28

Arabella is a horrible name. Certainly not 'posh'

I actually really like both Henrietta and Arabella. Both historic names with a royal/aristocratic pedigree, not made-up or "yoonique," and both shorten quite well.

anotherwordforit · 14/07/2025 21:14

Both my children’s names have appeared 🤣 but they are both in the top 10 so literally very common.

😂😂😂 DD's is on here a LOT, which is hilarious as we shorten it and noone's ever heard of it/call it very unusual, until we say the full version then it's all 'oh of course!!'!

I agree with this. I also think a lot of people consciously try to buck out of a box they feel they "belong" in.

I still think the Apples and Tiger-Lilys will never be 'posh' though they may have celeb cred.

Calliopespa · 14/07/2025 21:20

... and I'm afraid Im a bit MN in not liking unyoosual spellings like Jaxxon.

JMAngel1 · 14/07/2025 21:20

Tristan
Monty
Arabella
Henrietta

abracadabra1980 · 14/07/2025 21:20

Cordelia, Arora, Taliesin, jemima and Nathaniel.

Taliesin is just a Welsh name, not posh at all.

Knew one of these replies was coming 🤣 Great idea for a thread though! Hmm Princess (which is actually in the top 100 girls names right now 😬), Chardonnay, Mercedes. Anything named after a ‘classy’ brand basically.

So to answer your question I’d feel absolutely fine about it. The point of an anonymous forum is to be able to discuss things that we may not feel able to discuss IRL because of political correctness. If we’re not allowed to do that MN would be an extremely boring place

Yeah! I love a bit of class bias from either side. I heard a 'Harris' the other day, that's modern posh.

BackToRealitySigh · 14/07/2025 21:27

Bart (Bartholemew not Simpson he's mid 40's),
I went to school with a Jeremy but the name that always sounds poshest to me is St John!
Special mention for Miles.
