Would you report somebody for using a hosepipe during a ban?

Lots of people on FB saying they will continue using as much water as they please as they have “paid for it”.

Reservoir levels are at 55% capacity when normally it’s 89% and with much more hot weather to come, I’m worried that they will implement standpipes due to people being irresponsible.

No i wouldn’t because our water companies have been ripping us off for years! Oh and also im not a pathetic tell tale!

TheNightingalesStarling · 11/07/2025 18:33

Deoends how obnoxious they are and what they are doing with it....

There is actually quite a long list of exemptions. (You can fill a hot tub, not not a paddling pool for example....)

ButterCrackers · 11/07/2025 18:33

Absolutely. What selfish idiots. Water is a resource not something ordered online. These people should have their water cut off and available by stand pipe only.

MissMoneyFairy · 11/07/2025 18:34

Its a shame no one bothered to report the water companies who waste millions of gallons through leaks, poor maintenance, dirty water, people are fed up paying high prices and director bonuses to inefficient and dishonest utility companies.

HansHolbein · 11/07/2025 18:34

Depends if I liked them or not Grin

Gizlotsmum · 11/07/2025 18:34

If they were using it every day maybe, but not occasional use

simsbustinoutmimi · 11/07/2025 18:34

Yes, I would if there was a drought/ genuine there was going to be one.

WingBingo · 11/07/2025 18:35

All the water company needs is enough people to adhere to the ban. There will always be people that think the rules don’t apply to them

Grainsandgains · 11/07/2025 18:36

O be careful o what bases are you reporting.
I always have lush green lawn. Even through summer. Because it's a clver. And yes, I have been accused of watering when I shouldn't over the years .
My plants are always oing somewhat fine too because I re-use water from other sources.
While people on MN wash towels after each use😂

youreactinglikeafunmum · 11/07/2025 18:36

Honestly nah, live and let live

There's people that are dying but Taylor swift is still using her private jet, government is still selling arms, why should your neighbours suffer

WhistlingStraits · 11/07/2025 18:36

No, because I’m not a petty curtain twitcher.

MissyB1 · 11/07/2025 18:36

Not when the water companies shamelessly waste water every single day of the year, and all they care about is profits!

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/07/2025 18:37

No, life is too short.

That's a ridiculous exception. It reminds me of in covid when people were arguing flour was only to be used for making cakes and not for play doh - I'd argue play doh is far more beneficial to children than cake is to an adult! A hot tub is a massive luxury surely.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 11/07/2025 18:38

Almost certainly. One of my asshole, drunk neighbours watering their grass or aimlessly sprinkling it around the garden, then yes.

Frazzled nice neighbour filling up a small pool for pesky young kids then I'd turn a blind eye.

SirChenjins · 11/07/2025 18:39

It would depend who they were - my a-hole of a ndn, definitely 🤭

FlowerPower2525 · 11/07/2025 18:40

No.

No hot tubs.

“Watering the garden or plants in your garden at home
Cleaning private vehicles or boats

Filling or maintaining a swimming pool, paddling pool, hot tub or cold-water plunge pool at home

Filling or maintaining a domestic pond or ornamental fountain
Cleaning your home’s walls or windows yourself
Cleaning paths, patios or artificial outdoor surfaces “

You can’t fill a hot tub!

No I wouldn’t report. I might tut though.

Our local reservoir gets used in a lot of news reports, showing it almost empty with just a stream of water running through it. I have not heard one news report comment on the fact that the stream of water is running through 10 - 15 foot deep silt. Back in the dark ages of my youth, the water company would have maintained and dug that out. Now it’s just left to reduce the storage capacity of the reservoir. I can’t imagine that’s helping matters.

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 11/07/2025 18:43

People throwing other people under the bus whilst the shareholders still profit heavily and don’t fix leaky pipes because people are stupid enough to pay for it anyway.

How can you chop in a neighbour but stand by and be ok about the water company wasting gallons and gallons?

Arlanymor · 11/07/2025 18:44

I am have strong views because of Capel Celyn - cofiwch dryweryn. If people are using it more or less within the bounds of the ban then there’s a little wiggle room that you give them, of course.

But idiots wasting a precious commodity is revolting, much like going back to the days of when people hoarded toilet paper during Covid. The more you use, the less for everyone else. It’s pure selfishness. Do people want to go back to the standpipes of the 70s? It’s reckless, thoughtless and wrong.

BurntBroccoli · 11/07/2025 18:44

WhistlingStraits · 11/07/2025 18:36

No, because I’m not a petty curtain twitcher.

It’s not about curtain twitching, it’s about preserving what water we have left!

it’s been the driest Spring for 132 years.

Yes - the water companies are shit, but if we don’t use it carefully we may suffer standpipes as in 1976. No new reservoirs have been built and there are a lot more people.

WaitedBlankey · 11/07/2025 18:45

Filling a pond for fish, watering food crops, and having a blue badge are all exemptions. You may not know of exemptions which apply to them.

It's crap to use water wastefully when the resevoirs are low, but being a petty telltale about it doesn't help matters.

Seeline · 11/07/2025 18:45

I would if they were using a sprinkler for hours or similar.
I remember queuing to fill buckets of water at a stand pipe a couple of streets away and carrying them home the summer of '76. I wouldn't want to get to that stage again.
