Would you report somebody for using a hosepipe during a ban?

Lots of people on FB saying they will continue using as much water as they please as they have “paid for it”.

Reservoir levels are at 55% capacity when normally it’s 89% and with much more hot weather to come, I’m worried that they will implement standpipes due to people being irresponsible.

What about if you've just had turf laid? Do you have to leave it to die immediately or try to water it from many many refills of a watering can?

BurntBroccoli · 11/07/2025 18:51

I’m doing exactly that and have bought another larger watering can. I never water my grass as it’s a complete waste of water (it always grows back).

If the crunch comes and we don’t get much rain, then they will turn off water supplies to houses and install standpipes. It will be extremely difficult to water plants then.

I doubt the companies involved have the organisational skills needed to install standpipes.

It's taking the idiots in my village 7 months to build 200m of cycle lane at a time. 7 months of road closures and temporary lights. Per section. This is year 3. I wish I was joking.

Some people have two showers a day, wash towels every day, run the dishwasher. If my 91 year old mother who does none of these things watered her small garden which is her pride and joy for 5-10 minutes with a hose ( she can’t lift a watering can) then I definitely wouldn’t judge her

Because flats are sweat boxes and the new fire safety rules have made it even worse.

Yes I realise that but the fact is that current stocks are low and we are in a drought!
Using more water is going to make that a lot worse for everyone a month or two down the line…

A point that too many posters are missing

lovemycbf · 11/07/2025 20:04

You’re exempt if disabled
but no I wouldn’t get involved tbh

You can water new turf for 28 days if it was laid before the ban.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 11/07/2025 20:09

No

TheFairyCaravan · 11/07/2025 20:11

We’re in Yorkshire and I have a blue badge so I could use the hose but I won’t because I’m not totally selfish. DH can water the plants, sparingly, with a watering can. If he does go away for the night, the only plants that will get a light watering will be the tomatoes and strawberries.

If my neighbour, behind us, continues to put the sprinkler on his lawn for hours on an evening then I will report him, although I suspect my next door neighbour will do it first. The low levels of the reservoirs have been on the news for months, but people have buried their heads in the sand. It’s all well and good everyone complaining about the water companies, they’re terrible we all know it, but it’s not going to make it rain, or build a new reservoir is it? At the rate it’s going we are going to run out of water but crack on using it as you want because you’ve paid for it! 🙄

Iheartmysmart · 11/07/2025 20:13

Nope. For exactly the same reason as mentioned above. Thames Water are a fucking disgrace. I had an email from them saying about a likely hosepipe ban on the same day as a busy main road had to be closed for two days because of a burst water main in the town.

I’m careful with water. Only do a couple of loads of laundry a week, fill the kettle up with the minimum amount of water, take showers rather than baths, do my dishes once a day and pour any excess kettle water into a container to use for my houseplants. But if my 80 year old mum who has Parkinson’s wants to use her hosepipe to water her garden which is her pride and joy then good luck to her.

TarquinsTurnips · 11/07/2025 20:14

Every hot summer there's a thread about this. I wouldn't report them but I'd probably mention it to them as I'm a gob shite.

MaybeMrs · 11/07/2025 20:14

Come to mine, there has been a leak here since December but United utilities and the local council are arguing over who is responsible for the repair 🙈 they don’t give a crap about wasting water!

incognitomouse · 11/07/2025 20:15

Nah. There are constant water leaks left right and centre that never seem to get fixed, so if the water companies can't be arsed to save their own water...

If you're going to start mithering about hose pipes, should we start limiting showers. My teenage boys probably spend longer in the shower twice a day than I would watering my garden.

Thank you @TheNightingalesStarling. I'm also disabled (with blue badge) so hopefully no one will be curtain twitching if a ban comes into force in my area.

BatchCookBabe · 11/07/2025 20:15

LOL no! As has been said, the water companies have been letting millions of gallons of water run down the drains for YEARS because they wouldn't invest in new pipes and new systems. Victorian fucking pumbing under the ground going to shit, and flooded roads everywhere because of their neglect.

No way would I report anyone for using a hosepipe, and if MY area gets a 'hosepipe ban' my water company is deluded if they think I won't be using MY hosepipe! I will be watering my many 100s of flowers! No fucker is going to stop me! 🌻

Mayve · 11/07/2025 20:16

No of course I wouldn’t.

Absolutely blows my mind that anyone would report someone in their community for using a hosepipe (of all the things) when the companies actually responsible for the bloody water are knowingly losing millions of gallons a day. Mr Carruthers washing his car at no. 43 will have precisely zero effect on the state of the reservoir whilst thousands of gallons leak out downstream. We all know this, so why would ANYONE report? The only answer is because you enjoy the petty power of grassing someone up.
No wonder Stalin’s regime was so successful.

BatchCookBabe · 11/07/2025 20:16

Gosh I don't know what's going on sorry. Blush I kept clicking POST and my post wasn't going onto the thread, and now it's posted 3-4 times. Sorry everyone!

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 11/07/2025 20:16

I don’t even know if my area has a ban tbh

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 11/07/2025 20:19

No one should have a green lawn in this weather. Grass will be fine come Oct. I would definitely report someone watering grass.
Veg yes. Grass no.

Barney16 · 11/07/2025 20:20

Anything i think is completely skewed by a visceral hatred of Thames Water. I feel about them with the same dislike I felt about Margaret Thatcher and the poll tax Unlikely allies I will admit.

Livelovebehappy · 11/07/2025 20:22

Water companies have been raising our annual bills with the promise of investment in repairs and upgrades. And yet here we are. With the same problems we’ve had for decades. Leaky pipes not fit for purpose. I’m usually a rule follower but am beyond pissed off with empty promises from big companies just to grab more money.

Vaxtable · 11/07/2025 20:22

I agree if it's an already established lawn but if it's been laid literally days, fortunately you are allowed to water it for 28 days -otherwise that's a waste of a few thousand pounds. Probably cheaper to accept the fine if neighbours report than lose the new turf.

Livelovebehappy · 11/07/2025 20:26

Many of us have also spent a fortune on plants to cheer up our gardens. Not a chance am I leaving them to die due to the incompetence of Yorkshire Water.
