Would you report somebody for using a hosepipe during a ban?

Lots of people on FB saying they will continue using as much water as they please as they have “paid for it”.

Reservoir levels are at 55% capacity when normally it’s 89% and with much more hot weather to come, I’m worried that they will implement standpipes due to people being irresponsible.

No, and I very much doubt I’d even notice or care if I did.

@Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav No i wouldn’t because our water companies have been ripping us off for years!

What bonkers logic is this? What's the connection between water companies ripping you off and the UK not having enough water?

This makes about as much sense as saying "I don't want to go to a football match because I have too many coathangers in my wardrobe."

The water companies haven’t been fixing leaks as they should so there is a drop in water levels and we get ripped off by paying more for the water they’ve wasted. It’s always on the news.

eyeses · 11/07/2025 19:18

Last time we had a hosepipe ban the water company had the outside of their headquarters jetwashed. When challenged they said "because it was already booked"
It would have to be really quite egregious for me to report something like that.
Anyway, don't they use helicopters to (waste fuel) flying over to see if hosepipes are out?

Glitchymn1 · 11/07/2025 19:18

Yes.
Lots of whataboutery but we will have water rations in twenty years according to article I read today and I I value my child’s future. So yes I’ll record and report. 👍🏼

BurntBroccoli · 11/07/2025 19:18

Water situation report:
Dropping by nearly 10% every month…

No!

I checked our reservoir levels ( SWW) in the winter after the storms and they were at 100% almost across the board. The water companies have supported applications for more and more housing ( =income), but done nothing to increase supply to support the increased demand or manage the current dire state of the system with its leaks.

Well I hope someone reports my neighbour who has spent the last half hour hosing down the road outside her house. Hmm

While at same time I've been saving water used for cooking eggs and rinsing fruit to water plants with and a local reservoir looks like this and we've been told the Yorkshire hosepipe ban will last until nearly Christmas. That bridge is usually well under water and is only exposed during times of severe drought.

Yes I saw that one.
I would have to say something of a neighbour was doing that! WTF!

Why are disabled people allowed hosepipes? Not being goady, just interested.

(I wouldn't report anyone but I'd definitely think less of them!)

Its if their disability means they can't water the garden with a watering can for example. Not supposed to used willy nilly just for the sake of it

It’s because they may not be able to manage a heavy watering can. My new one weighs a lot when full.

Its a shame no one bothered to report the water companies who waste millions of gallons through leaks, poor maintenance, dirty water, people are fed up paying high prices and director bonuses to inefficient and dishonest utility companies.

This. I wouldn't report anyone. I also won't be taking any notice of the ban either.

Finteq · 11/07/2025 19:23

I wouldn't tell.

But also don't have a hosepipe ban

And how does wasting more water harm the water companies, while simultaneously not harming the general public?

mummymissessunshine · 11/07/2025 19:25

No

eyeses · 11/07/2025 19:27

How about we build more reservoirs in step with housebuilding in each area since the last new reservoir?
Unpopular opinion?
If we can't even maintain (dredge) existing reservoirs without emptying them then spare capacity is essential even to keep the same capacity available.

Grainsandgains · 11/07/2025 18:36

O be careful o what bases are you reporting.
I always have lush green lawn. Even through summer. Because it's a clver. And yes, I have been accused of watering when I shouldn't over the years .
My plants are always oing somewhat fine too because I re-use water from other sources.
While people on MN wash towels after each use😂

Excuse me. I wash my towels mid use.

Ponderingwindow · 11/07/2025 19:31

large volume, repetitive behavior, perhaps.

a one off, no. Sometimes people have a decent reason to violate a rule. Using the hosepipe might be the most efficient use of resources to deal with a problem that can’t just be ignored.

LadyLapsang · 11/07/2025 19:31

Surely the key point is how much water you use. We have always had a water metre, buy A plus domestic appliances, have short showers not baths, if I want to water some plants ( can’t lift the watering can) why is that problematic if others are having daily baths, not using a water metre and using profligate appliances? Just make water metres compulsory and allocate a water allowance per person in the property based on the people living in the property. How they use their allowance is up to them.

No

It doesn't matter who owns the water companies, they still can't magic up water from nowhere. Climate change is here now. We will have drier summers and increasing periods of drought. We all have to do our bit because y'know, water is a vital resource. If we live our lives in a sustainable way, then those resources will be available to us all when we need them. That means planting for our changing climate, holding off from using a jetwash when it hasn't rained in a fortnight, and being mindful of what we use.

RampantIvy · 11/07/2025 19:33

simsbustinoutmimi · 11/07/2025 18:34

Yes, I would if there was a drought/ genuine there was going to be one.

Yorkshire is officially in drought. The Pennine reservoirs are worryingly low. This is Woodhead, taken this morning.

Would you report somebody for using a hosepipe during a ban?
ShittyHottie · 11/07/2025 19:33

BurntBroccoli · 11/07/2025 19:06

Omg that’s worse than I thought.
Why aren’t people taking this seriously?!

Because they don't believe it, or don't understand how interconnected everything is so can't comprehend how it matters.

Also - everyone's got Doom Fatigue. It's got worse since the pandemic. People just think "oh here we go, more doom" and focus on how to make the current doom livable for themselves. It's hard to think of the big picture when you're overwhelmed and stressed and struggling.

101Nutella · 11/07/2025 19:33

No I wouldn’t. The water companies haven’t built any new reservoirs in 30 years I think. Some of this would be avoidable I think. They’ve had chances to increase infrastructure to keep up with growing population but have just prioritised profiteering and shareholders.

ShittyHottie · 11/07/2025 19:35

NewGoldFox · 11/07/2025 19:29

Excuse me. I wash my towels mid use.

Disgusting. I wash mine before and after each use and daily while they're being stored waiting to be used. You are a slattern tbh and I expect you've all got raging impetigo and smell like wet dog all the time.

You'll be telling me you only change the sheets daily next. I change mine at midnight and again at 4am. Can't be too careful.

DiscoBob · 11/07/2025 19:35

Not really no. If I couldn't use the hosepipe it would take hours and loads of physical effort to water the plants. Not that I've a massive garden but physically it would be extremely difficult.
So I wouldn't report someone as I wouldn't want anyone to report me.
If push came to shove I'd go without a shower or several to make sure my beloved plants didn't die!
