Would you report somebody for using a hosepipe during a ban?

Lots of people on FB saying they will continue using as much water as they please as they have “paid for it”.

Reservoir levels are at 55% capacity when normally it’s 89% and with much more hot weather to come, I’m worried that they will implement standpipes due to people being irresponsible.

There is a severe drought here. Driest Spring for 132 years. Farmers are extremely worried. Crops aren’t growing that well, no grass for livestock so they are having to eat the winter hay.

Yep. The hay cut round here has been down by about 60% - a farmer told me in the shop yesterday that they usually bring in 1000-1200 bales but this year it's only been 370 😦

Rollonrain · 11/07/2025 19:01

I can't understand the posters saying they wouldn't report just because they are ( quite rightly) outraged by the water companies.
As the old saying goes Two wrongs don't make a right and if people just totally ignore the hose pipe ban then we will eventually have no access to running water. Getting your own back at the water companies wont help the present water shortage.
Fwiw like many people I would turn a blind eye to an occasional misuse of water in certain circumstances but would report sprinklers and other frequent and unnecessary usage.

If all of you had seen Woodhead puddle reservoir today you might judge water wasters more harshly. We are currently keeping a washing up bowl in the sink to tip water on the garden, and using water from our water butts to water the tomatoes.

Summerartwitch · 11/07/2025 18:54

Nope. Because the real criminals are the greedy water companies have been ripping us off and mismanaging the network for years.

We need to re-nationalise water supply.

Edited

I completely agree with re nationalisation.

Do you not think levels could reach critical level if it continues to be very dry and people continue to use as normal?

Exactly what I’m talking about! I’m shocked at the photos of the low levels in the reservoirs.

Just popping on to say that vulnerable customers, such as people with young children or disabilities do not always have to follow hosepipe bans, although obviously they are encouraged to. We have had a letter through today saying that we don't have to follow the hosepipe ban.

That’s good and only right.

No and I’d be using mine too. We pay enough for water as it is so I would not be cutting back.

Omg that’s worse than I thought.
Why aren’t people taking this seriously?!

I think it's very poor that given the population rise they have done nothing to increase reservoir capacity since somewhere around 1992. The new ones will take years to be ready.

My neighbour who is not on a water meter uses his oscillating sprinkler for 4 hours every day. I wouldn’t report him, because I know his other neighbour would 😂

You are correct. We had a letter from Yorkshire Water to say we are exempt. But the lack of water wouldn't be a problem in our case, but the lack of electricity would, so I have disconnected our hose and won't use it until the ban is lifted.

GuevarasBeret · 11/07/2025 19:08

I find it bizarre that people are whining about for profit companies taking actions which maximize their profit for shareholders.

If people want water companies to be made to do repairs, then talk to your MP, make it an election issue and vote for a party that say they will solve it.

This is a direct result of Thatcherite policies that people voted for. The government has to ensure that the infrastructure is kept up to date, and they have to do that but forcing the for profit companies to do it.

LemondrizzleShark · 11/07/2025 19:09

BrightLightTonight · 11/07/2025 18:55

No. I reported a water leak to Thames water. The water was pouring out - 6 weeks later they turned up to fix it. If they were that worried about conserving water, they would be ensuring leaks are fixed.

Same - we had a small river running down our road for three weeks in spring. A massive mains leak down by the station since last Thursday. No sign of any work on it.

It is galling to see how shit Thames Water is, and frankly the quicker it goes bankrupt the better.

Arlanymor · 11/07/2025 19:11

Also my water company is not for profit.

Hopefully that will include the ones who are loving this weather and goading those of us who dont. but i suspect there is a correlation

shuggles · 11/07/2025 19:13

@Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav No i wouldn’t because our water companies have been ripping us off for years!

What bonkers logic is this? What's the connection between water companies ripping you off and the UK not having enough water?

This makes about as much sense as saying "I don't want to go to a football match because I have too many coathangers in my wardrobe."

PearlsPearl · 11/07/2025 19:13

Why are disabled people allowed hosepipes? Not being goady, just interested.

(I wouldn't report anyone but I'd definitely think less of them!)

Bjorkdidit · 11/07/2025 19:16

Well I hope someone reports my neighbour who has spent the last half hour hosing down the road outside her house. Hmm

While at same time I've been saving water used for cooking eggs and rinsing fruit to water plants with and a local reservoir looks like this and we've been told the Yorkshire hosepipe ban will last until nearly Christmas. That bridge is usually well under water and is only exposed during times of severe drought.

Would you report somebody for using a hosepipe during a ban?
pinkstripeycat · 11/07/2025 19:16

They’ve admitted today that the drop in water (hence the bans coming in to place) are due to all the water leaks over the last year that the water companies don’t get round to fixing so we suffer by being told not to use hosepipes.
