Do you cry when leaving holiday resort?

I haven't been in a resort for years so don't know if this is a thing, but yesterday I was talking to someone who just came back from holiday, saying she (and her family) were "bawling their eyes out" when leaving, how the staff became like family, how they are going to keep in touch with them and intend to visit them again. It brought back memories of when I was an early teen (the last time I was in a resort) and there were families crying like this, promising to write to staff and do on.
Sometimes I feel a bit sad to be leaving a place, but have never felt devastated or feeling that I have a special bond with the staff. I'm now wondering if there's something wrong with me?!

I may have shed a tear of joy when we left Tunisia about 30 years ago

No, that sounds ridiculous. I’ve only ever done anything like this once, but in my defence I was 17 and in the throes of a holiday romance with one of the staff (and yes probably one of many and I never bothered keeping in touch with him!)

Only in a water taxi on the Grand Canal leaving Venice. But usually I am always glad to come home. It must depend on what people are returning to and if they live somewhere unpleasant

Bizarre behaviour. How can you get that attached to people after 1-2 weeks. Its their job to be nice and make sure you have a good time. Ok, maybe you have a connection, you want to meet up if they come here, but crying? Grow up I would say.

I see this all the time on Facebook groups where hotel guests have staff get into photos with them and they rave on about how much like family the staff are , how they are in their 'home' etc. and other such nonsense.

I can only imagine the poor staff think they are ridiculous but feel they have to pose with the. Cringe !!

No 😂

Skibbgirl · 14/07/2025 12:01

That does sound like a fairly extreme reaction, IMHO. 🤔

I did feel very sad indeed to leave a little street cat one time.

Veryvulture · 14/07/2025 23:57

No. I’ve never seen anyone else do it either!
I always try and treat the staff well and tip, so we often get a cheery hug goodbye with some free snacks for the journey! That’s as emotional as it gets!

No. I read on here last week about someone “crying buckets” on the plane after a holiday. I was amazed. Just why? Pull yourselves together.

Been to many a small place out of season and made great friends with the other guests, - gone as far as go to the ferry to see them off or to the coach

But cry?

Wise up. Its a two week holiday , you have had fun, you have enjoyed the company of others , they have helped you enjoy the holiday, you have said your goodbyes

We used to go to the same hotel at the same time every year - for years. Some craic was had - I couldn't even name the guests now , nor the staff

Oh good grief absolutely not , they sound weird. If I was that emotionally fragile leaving a holiday I think I would just stay at home.

p.s.what does the Sistine Chapel have to do with it
