Do you cry when leaving holiday resort?

I haven't been in a resort for years so don't know if this is a thing, but yesterday I was talking to someone who just came back from holiday, saying she (and her family) were "bawling their eyes out" when leaving, how the staff became like family, how they are going to keep in touch with them and intend to visit them again. It brought back memories of when I was an early teen (the last time I was in a resort) and there were families crying like this, promising to write to staff and do on.
Sometimes I feel a bit sad to be leaving a place, but have never felt devastated or feeling that I have a special bond with the staff. I'm now wondering if there's something wrong with me?!

This is insane

How absolutely bizarre. I almost envy them, must be exciting to feel such big emotions! 😂

Not really, the people I know with big emotions tend to have huge ups, but also huge downs. I’d rather be fairly stable thanks!

Yes I think these are the type. Yianni served them twice at the pool bar and they come back and tell everyone how close they are, like family 🤣

Please don't 😂

The amount of selfies with what are essentially strangers they take and post on Facebook because they happened to be in the same bar or whatever is ridiculous!

Got a girls weekend coming up and a couple of them are coming and I can promise right now that at least 8 new besties will be made and even more friend request sent 😂I'll just hide in a corner with my drink

Mayve · 10/07/2025 12:02

Same people who write detailed long reviews on Tripadvisor thanking each staff member individually
“Miguel who was always there to help with the sunbeds “luvvy jooobly!” IYKYK we will never forget your kindness getting us a new towel the day Dave was sick - Eliza on the bar “new fashioned??” LOL, in joke sorry, service was incredible and we will never forget you helping us find a new coaster the day Dave fell asleep on a pile of them”…. Etc etc

EnglishGirlApproximately · 10/07/2025 12:03

These are the people that sit on the same seats at the same bar every night and 'make friends' with the bar staff. Utterly mad, there'll be different people doing the same within an hour of them leaving - they aren't you best friend!
I've felt sad leaving places I've loved and DS cried leaving Florida but he's a kid so forgiven 🙂

No, they're clearly bonkers. Do they cry when they have to return a library book?!

do people still use libraries? How lovely I haven't seen a working library for years!

SortingLaundry · 10/07/2025 12:05

Erm, no. That’s a bit dramatic for me.

RosesAndHellebores · 10/07/2025 12:06

Ds did a couple of times, but not after turning five.

EvilDJ · 10/07/2025 12:06

Hell no. I always laugh at those Tripadvosor reviews where they name the staff and say how much they loved them and miss them. I wonder if there’s a Guestadvisor where Mihalis is waxing lyrical about Pete and Pat from Wetwang and their exciting tales about their new conservatory.

Haha - excellent. This is exactly it. "Nicest people I've ever met..."

Trovindia · 10/07/2025 12:08

No, never, what bizarre behaviour, although people like this are why I don't go to resorts on holiday as they are my worst nightmare.

The only time I've got a bit tearful was the time we had a family of cats living in the garden of our apartment and I was worried about their future after we left (very young kittens) as I couldn't get any local rescues to help them, so I did get emotional at leaving them there but I didn't cry, just was a little choked up as I stroked them for the last time.

Nope, this is weird behaviour. I am basically obsessed with holidays and love having one to look forward to but I always feel strangely happy to go back home too! My DD once cried when she had her last kids club session as she loved it there so much but she was only 5!

hellohellohellohelo · 10/07/2025 12:10

Only once… when we left a resort in Jamaica where there were Nannies assigned to your family for the stay. We had 2 kids under 2 and it was amazing. I was definitely tearful when we left as it was back to reality.. not a posh resort, but just totally set up for families.

HostaCentral · 10/07/2025 12:10

I used to when I spent two months in Italy with family as a teenager, but then it was like my home. So yes, devastated to leave.

DD has just come back from a 6 week sabbatical. It was very special and she was very emotional to leave.

2 weeks in an AI, weird.

Having said that, we do always make contacts in the hotels we go to. But when we find a gem, we tend to return year after year, we only go to privately owned hotels, and create real bonds with the owners and staff. Yes, we really do become friends and keep in touch.

Hug and kiss when we arrive and when we leave 😊

IAmTheLogLady · 10/07/2025 12:12

Never. I am a bit of a softy and well up at all sorts.
I've never cried at leaving at a resort.

lovemeblender · 10/07/2025 12:13

Oh god I'm bawling wetting myself reading these and they are bringing back some memories. About 10 years ago my ds had an op and there was a similar aged boy (10) in the next bed. His mother would enter the ward with "Yasooooo" then loudly explain to everyone that they had been to Greece the previous summer, her mind was now "thinking in Greek" and that they planned to emigrate there as it was sooo relaxing and they had "a new family there". I assumed they'd spent the whole summer there, but it had only been a week!

I enjoy NOT making friends on holiday.

I do like to say 'goodbye' to my holiday accommodation to thank it for a lovely time. But no weeping.

I think they need professional help

Yes!! I do and quite a few other people use ours.

No3392 · 10/07/2025 12:17

Absolutely don't cry at all!

Have kept in touch with a few staff members via Instagram. But I travel solo, so that may be why.

Camarthen67912 · 10/07/2025 12:17

No, not bawling my eyes out, but I have felt a bit of sadness when leaving a normal holiday.

Having said that, I spent a huge part of my childhood growing up abroad and now we go back there every year for a week to see old friends etc, and I always cry when leaving (part of it is that a lot of our family friends are getting older and you never know if you'll see them again). Even thinking about the plane journey home makes me well up. But I guess that's different than leaving a typical holiday.

Zezet · 10/07/2025 12:18

I came here purely to see a reference to the Sistine chapel. Thank you PP.
