What is something that is popular but is also something that you detest. It can be anything.

Picky bits - can’t fucking stand that phrase
Blake Lively - no, do not and have never got the hype. Rich nepo baby D list actress.
Love Island - trash
Dog/cats being pushed around in prams- if it has working legs, it can walk
Protein products - UPF advertised to the masses as “health” food to make a huge profit. Just eat whole foods that are high in protein.

You?

The dumbing down of the English language (no apostrophes, 'of' instead of 'have', no understanding of there/their etc etc etc)
Facial aesthetics (unless for medical reasons)
Mrs Brown's Boys (just so horribly crude)
Drugs and alcohol (their misuse ruins so many lives)
Eating animals (there's no longer any excuse for such barbarism)
That it's acceptable to mock Christianity
Any temperature over 21 degrees
Cars that are able to exceed the maximum speed limit (other than rescue/police vehicles)
Charities that pretend to be all about the animals but are actually no help whatsoever in a real-life situation (you all know who I mean!)
Pornography (no explanation needed, surely)

I never get the whole thing about language. Languages change and evolve over time, conventions grow and fade.

Someone writing 100 years ago would be appalled by you using “dumbing down” as a verb, which is a 20th century phrase. The snapshot of history and locality where you learned grammar conventions is not inherently better than the snapshot of history where other people did.

I'm not annoyed by tattoos I just think they are almost all quite bad drawings. I wouldn't put that on my wall so I can't see why I'd ink it into my body.

People love them so much and show them to you - what can you say? This tasteless doodle is depressing and shite? No. I just nod and smile and change the subject.

...But it's not WRONG to have them! (I hasten to add having seen the weirdness upthread. I just think they are ugly, not immoral.)

But dogs are almost the same as children, and most non-working breeds love being treated as such - I'm ducking down!

The word "almost" doing some heavy lifting there!

@ToutesetBonne What's wrong with mocking Christianity - or any other religion or belief? Isn't that just free speech?

The thread isn't about what's right or wrong it's about what you detest and if that's what a poster detests why shouldn't they say so?

Cosmetic surgery. It never looks as good as the people who get it think it does, it's frankly an eyesore.

Dogs being absolutely everywhere. Fine to be in some places (mostly outdoors!) but non service dogs should NOT be in restaurants or even indoors in pubs, especially not if food is being served.

Agree with OP about Blake Lively. She and her husband are a pair of utter grifters who set out to destroy someone who dared to challenge their sense of self importance, and I hope that we will see far less of them going forward.

People preaching about climate change. Either it's going to happen whatever we do, or it's vastly overstated-I often think the latter, to be honest.

The 'free Palestine' movement. People who have no bloody clue about the history of the region waving flags and shouting, often some pretty hateful stuff. The fact that they started these marches before the bodies of those slaughtered on October 7th were even cold makes me think it isn't about care for Palestinians at all, it us dar darker.

Yes: parties, weddings, graduations, passing out parades, prize givings, ceremonies in general, speeches.

Popular and mostly awful.

The ‘word’ gotten.

Also "wait list" being used in the UK instead of WAITING list.

Conflate - used by various posters on MN but no-one IRL actually uses this word.

Hahaha! I learned that word from mumsnet and then used it on mumsnet. Felt so proud using my new word!
