Places that gave you the heebie jeebies

There have been a few places have made me feel uneasy but only one place gave me such an immediate visceral reaction that I practically ran out of it… the Time Out Market ladies toilets in Porto.
Yes, really,
Such an odd experience.
It’s situated upstairs of the food market. Down a short corridor but the whole place was painted white. It gave off very clinical vibes, and even though I really needed to go, I just turned heel and literally legged it out of there.
Anyone actually been there and had similar feelings? Or anywhere else that has made you feel physically uneasy or have I been watching too many horror movies?
(Disclaimer: I’m a number one wuss and never watch horror movies!)

Another vote for Bodmin Jail. The horror & despair is palpable. In fact, the whole town has a very weird vibe.
Anywhere with a lot of pylons. I can’t bear them & had a lot of nightmares as a kid.

Porlock in Somerset left me feeling really unsettled. Literally not a soul around but felt as though there were eyes everywhere on us walking through there.

I used to live in Porlock. I've moved around a lot and Porlock is the place I was made to feel least welcome in 60 years. You need 8 generations of family in the church yard before people will smile at you in the street. People actively turn their head to avoid meeting your eye.

The next place along is called Porlock Weir. Someone changed the street sign to say Porlock's Weird - they weren't wrong.

IndependentAdjudicator · 02/07/2025 17:33

I've really enjoyed reading everyone's experiences and I have looked things up too @Prayingforananswer
It's been an education for sure - kind of history and geography all in one 😄

Oh no Porlock is on my list to retire to!!

Rent before you buy then @Makemydaypunk . You might love it - beautiful countryside but my goodness I was lonely.

Things I did wrong - have a rescue mongrel dog (only pure breed are ok), took a voluntary job picking litter (stops proper jobs being available for local people), gave away spare fallen apples from my garden at my gate (stops tourists buying them in the local shop) and rode a bike (if I didn't catch the bus they'd stop the service.)

They also stick daffodils in any dog poo that's not picked up.

Honestly - Porlock's Weird.

DH just said his little brother got weird feelings in Oxford. Nothing he could put his finger on, just felt uneasy. York gave me that feeling too, which is weird because I know so many MN absolutely love it.

Me too.

The site of the Twin Towers - of course, you know what happened and are primed for it, but I was hit with an awful sense of despair and loss and sadness, like a huge physical weight pressing me down into the earth, and found I was weeping without even realising it...

Hawthornden Castle outside Edinburgh. Stayed there a month and don't think I slept a whole night through, kept waking in panic. Just a feeling of something there, and I wasn't the only guest who thought so; others heard noises and everyone had nightmares, often the same ones as each other...

That’s interesting about Hawthornden . I know it quite well and have stayed overnight there a lot. I can’t say I ever felt it was particularly creepy . The owner Mrs Heinz was a very strange woman and maybe she now haunts the place. She’s buried in the bank by the drive.

IndependentAdjudicator · 02/07/2025 21:58

@Makemydaypunk what's the draw for you to Porlock?

@Bridport how long were you there for?

@Beautifulcreatures2 Me too - York or Oxford?

We've been to Twin Towers memorial site. It just felt incredibly poignant and sad, but peaceful.
DH works with a lot of American colleagues who lost family and friends that day.

Both York and Oxford! Didn’t like either and felt both had strange vibes.

Ceebeegee · 02/07/2025 23:08

Cannock forest. Felt like I was being watched. Heebie jeebies.

Makemydaypunk · 02/07/2025 23:15

Sounds like you had a tough time @Bridport I hope you have found somewhere more welcoming and friendly to live now, maybe I need to think again! @IndependentAdjudicator I go a few times a year to Porlock and I’ve always just thought it was a lovely place, I’ve always wanted to live in a pretty village that’s vibrant with some nice pubs, cafes and a few shops for the essentials which isn’t too far from a town (Minehead has a Sainsburys!) maybe I need to scratch the surface a bit more by the sound of it though.

Our local woods in Tunbridge Wells.Just feel stressed whenever I go there and worry about every noise I hear .My dog always resists entering the woods. Not sure if she senses my stress or she feels unnerved as well! Have sadly stopped going there now 😔

I’m from Tunbridge wells, the woods there give off very off vibes!! Torrington car park too…

coxesorangepippin · 02/07/2025 23:57

Good to see Todmorden is mentioned on here

I've had a few weird experiences driving through there, especially towards crawshawbooth too. Felt an immense sense of loss and fear basically

It is very bleak, with the valley on either side

There's a pub called the Staff of Life on the way into Todmorden and they used to serve homemade fruit liquor/wine. I was absolutely wasted off the stuff one time

coxesorangepippin · 02/07/2025 23:59

Also re.Todmorden, Alan Godfrey, he had a crazy UFO experience

coxesorangepippin · 03/07/2025 00:00

To finish my soliloquy about Todmorden, Harold Shipman also used to work there

MaggieMJ · 03/07/2025 03:51

Old theatres are a bit weird aren't they ? Cemeteries I'm usually ok with. There's a wood I felt odd in but can't think where !!

Bridport · 03/07/2025 09:13

@IndependentAdjudicator I was there three years. Lived, volunteered, went to church and walked my dog there - as unfriendly on the day I left as the day I moved in.
@Makemydaypunk Perhaps it was just me. There were good things about Porlock, beautiful walks, theatre in the church hall. Perhaps rent a cottage for a few weeks in winter and live like you're actually living there. It might be for you. I'm somewhere I absolutely love now. Hope you settle somewhere you enjoy.

Oh my gosh yes Cannock chase/ forest. I’d forgotten about that. Me and late dh had a very weird experience outside the German war cemetery place. In fact the whole chase felt off.

couldnt wait to leave there and drive home

Definitely long enough to have settled in properly then!
Was this reaction a deciding factor on you leaving Porlock?
It must’ve been a very uneasy three years.

@Makemydaypunk Would be amazing if you did move out there, and you remembered to report back on here 😅

@blackheartsgirl oooh can you elaborate on your very weird experience?

OP posts:
Bridport · 04/07/2025 08:14

I gave it my all @IndependentAdjudicator . In the end I moved because I had a place on a course elsewhere, but I wouldn't have stayed. It would have been too lonely and sapping.

Beautifulcreatures2 · 02/07/2025 22:53

Both York and Oxford! Didn’t like either and felt both had strange vibes.

DH brother was over yesterday and I asked him about Oxford.
He said he felt "off" from the start, then developed a crushing headache, which lifted as soon as they left.
In his words "never felt anything like it".

Stow on the wold, strange place even though it’s touted as a place of beauty. Driving through North Wales, both dh and I said how oppressive it felt.

TheChosenTwo · 16/07/2025 20:37

@WildFlowerBees dh and I spent a night there earlier this year and found it really quaint and quite charming!! Plenty of pubs to choose from anyway 😂😂
