There have been a few places have made me feel uneasy but only one place gave me such an immediate visceral reaction that I practically ran out of it… the Time Out Market ladies toilets in Porto.
Yes, really,
Such an odd experience.
It’s situated upstairs of the food market. Down a short corridor but the whole place was painted white. It gave off very clinical vibes, and even though I really needed to go, I just turned heel and literally legged it out of there.
Anyone actually been there and had similar feelings? Or anywhere else that has made you feel physically uneasy or have I been watching too many horror movies?
(Disclaimer: I’m a number one wuss and never watch horror movies!)

Tyneham Village near Corfe Castle... It's a very interesting place but I did feel sad knowing that the villagers never got to go back...
"Tyneham, Dorset, is known for a poignant message left on the church door when its residents were evacuated in 1943. The note, pinned as the villagers left to make way for military training, entreated those who came after to "treat the church and houses with care" and expressed hope for their eventual return. The message also stated, "We have given up our homes, where many of us have lived for generations, to help win the war and keep men free".

Oh that is sad @Elderflower14 😔

I see there's a lot of love for York (on another thread) it's just not for me.

DH brother was over yesterday and I asked him about Oxford.
He said he felt "off" from the start, then developed a crushing headache, which lifted as soon as they left.
In his words "never felt anything like it".

Oxford is at the bottom of a shallow basin, and is traditionally supposed to have had overly ‘relaxing’ air. It also used to (when I lived there) have poor air quality because of tourist coaches. Outside the Taylorian in summer was like some pollution hotspot. I loved it there, but I could quite see it’s not for everyone. I also think that if you’re a tourist, it must be quite alienating, looking at the outsides of all the colleges.

Oddly specific but I always feel very strange walking along the footpath under the new bridge in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

I get the shivers in toy shops, particularly at Christmas. I’m not sure what it is.

It could be the cost of toys and the very long queues for the tills.

More likely, though, it’s bad energy and the spirits of long dead Roman soldiers, headless monks, victims of witch hunts and wronged Victorian spinsters. Defo.

There's nothing at all to worry about, as long as you've left the shop before 9pm - as that's when the toys all come alive for the night.

It's all those eyes looking at you.
I'm sure they follow you around the shop 😉

@WildFlowerBees dh and I spent a night there earlier this year and found it really quaint and quite charming!! Plenty of pubs to choose from anyway 😂😂

I am definitely in the minority! I know lots of people who love it there. It’s pretty but has a strange feel to it (I think!)

IndependentAdjudicator · 17/07/2025 12:53

@WildFlowerBees I know nothing of the place so have just looked it up.
There is a town nearby called
'Odd'-ington, so maybe you're onto something 😄
Is it very Midsomer Murders?

Stow on the wold, strange place even though it’s touted as a place of beauty. Driving through North Wales, both dh and I said how oppressive it felt.

I think most of Wales has a dark, oppressive feel - even though it's also very beautiful. I think it's the generally grey skies, rain and lots of grey buildings or bungalows. My ds says its depressing.

TheChosenTwo · 17/07/2025 21:28

@WildFlowerBees it is small, the sort of centre of town is a weird shape and it’s penned in with lots of stone buildings, we were there in January and although it was a rare sunny day I imagine it could feel quite oppressive and dark.
But just for an evening mini pub crawl, dinner and a stay followed by a morning stroll we found it novel and pretty 😂 basically nothing like our home town!!

Places with loads of taxidermied animals. They are creepy.

I remember on the year 5 school residential in and around Whitby, we went to a museum around there. Museum was mainly taxidermied animals. I walked out. I got a right telling off. I said these taxidermies are giving the creeps.

Ventnor Botanic Gardens on the Isle of Wight. Spent many years holidaying on the Island and would take the kids there for summer evening picnics before the council sold the whole place to a private company and started charging admission. It was a lovely place but was built on the site of a demolished hospital and one area of the car park always made me feel uneasy, not sure why. There was a great children's playground which my lot loved, so I never let how I felt about the car park get in the way of visiting. Just always made DH park away from that area.

Check out “ Hocus Pocus - The Tiny Hotel” which is right in the centre of York. I actually physically recoiled when I saw the photos on a travel offers site! I couldn’t stay there if you paid me! My reaction was so overwhelming just from images that I can’t even imagine what it would be like to actually enter the building.

RabbitsRock · 18/07/2025 07:16

Having said that, it is amazing how it’s all been done. Apparently they get a lot of Harry Potter fans staying.

overthinker001 · 18/07/2025 07:18

Chatham high street in Kent, if you’ve been you’ll know why.

A few years ago I was on holiday in Lanzarote, staying in a gorgeous villa. It had a massive basement and even thinking about it now raises the hairs on the back of my neck. It just felt so awful. My ds and I both had bedrooms down there and I ended up sleeping in with DS because of the bad feeling I got down there. I was so relieved when we left. I’ve been back to Lanzarote several times since and always avoid the area where the villa is.

IndependentAdjudicator · 18/07/2025 11:03

@BloodyHellBob
You were brave to even venture down there again.
Reading that gave me shivers in 32°C heat.
