There have been a few places have made me feel uneasy but only one place gave me such an immediate visceral reaction that I practically ran out of it… the Time Out Market ladies toilets in Porto.
Yes, really,
Such an odd experience.
It’s situated upstairs of the food market. Down a short corridor but the whole place was painted white. It gave off very clinical vibes, and even though I really needed to go, I just turned heel and literally legged it out of there.
Anyone actually been there and had similar feelings? Or anywhere else that has made you feel physically uneasy or have I been watching too many horror movies?
(Disclaimer: I’m a number one wuss and never watch horror movies!)

Forgot to add, this was last October. It may have been in the middle of a refurb, because there wasn’t any tiles or proper flooring, just kind of fitted out in mdf/plasterboard, but the whole lot painted all white.
It may be very different now, if anyone has been recently.

Well, I think the first floor women’s toilets in the Knightsbridge Harvey Nicks is possibly the London Hellmouth…

PiggieWig · 30/06/2025 19:53

Any children’s play area where the equipment is moving but there’s no-one there.

Sauvin · 30/06/2025 19:54

You’ve been watching too many horror movies. Unless you believe inanimate objects such as bricks and mortar can somehow reach out and affect the human mind.

Tredegar House (national trust) Newport, Wales.

Couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Never had the creepy scary feeling ever before, never had it since.

Ripley, a small village near Harrogate in North Yorkshire. I passed through on the bus one time years ago and I was struck by its overly neat appearance, matching street signs and slightly artificial feel. It reminded me of the village in The Prisoner. I felt quite uncomfortable and was glad to get out, even after just a few minutes.

Not creepy, just weird - the old Elephant &Castle shopping centre. Deserted and unlit in places, full of empty or random units and retro popcorn machines that probably hadn’t been touched in 10 years. It was like a Stranger Things set.

Collided battlefield is the most erie place I’ve ever been. It’s like the ground has soaked up death and betrayal.

HallidayJones6779 · 30/06/2025 19:58

Boscastle. Such a creepy place.

Anewuser · 30/06/2025 20:01

Avebury, near Devizes.

Used to regularly drive through there. The hair would always go up on the back of my neck.

Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, visited on holiday and it’s an abandoned military/residential facility.
Tons of abaondoned buildings and just a really weird vibe. I was so happy to get off the island and back on the little ferry it felt like a weight had been lifted

IndependentAdjudicator · 30/06/2025 20:02

That’s just reminded me of an episode of Escape to the Country.
I think it was in Sussex, but there was one house which had a room upstairs that made the man freak out, and had to get out of it.
Does anyone else remember such an episode?
I have tried searching for it a few times but never found it!

Our local woods in Tunbridge Wells.Just feel stressed whenever I go there and worry about every noise I hear .My dog always resists entering the woods. Not sure if she senses my stress or she feels unnerved as well! Have sadly stopped going there now 😔

I used to drive through there daily to work and always felt energised by the stones.
However I know someone who said how creepy the pub was there.

SwankyPants · 30/06/2025 20:15

My sister used to live in a flat near Portsmouth seafront. I think it was a converted hotel.
I hated it with a passion, it had an awful feel about it. Really oppressive.

Oh, I love Avebury. A friend lived nearby. It was always full of Druid handfastings.

Boscastle. Such a creepy place.

Wow, I spent my childhood holidays there and loved it!

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 30/06/2025 20:29

Port Merion. Felt like I was being watched. I hated it!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/06/2025 20:42

My great aunt used to live in Wolverhampton, I just felt completely like my soul had been sucked of all joy when I went, never been somewhere like it where it felt so grim.

I burst into tears from nowhere once having treatment in an old hospital building. I just felt like something really bad had happened there…

Tredegar House (national trust) Newport, Wales.

Couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Never had the creepy scary feeling ever before, never had it since.

There may be a reason for that...

Evan Morgan, the 2nd Viscount Tredegar "The Black Monk" practised the occult. He was a pal of the infamous Satanist Aleister Crowley (a.k.a. "The Great Beast"), and it is known that they held Satanic rituals at Tredegar House. Crowley referred to Morgan as "the adept of adepts", and recorded that some the rituals carried out at Tredegar House frightened even him. I dread to think what they were up to!

The National Trust guides don't tend to mention that!

@Jellycatspyjamas Do you mean Culloden ?
Strangely I found it very peaceful, and I'm Scottish !
