What things are you a complete weirdo about?

I'm really weird about laundry. I genuinely love it. In my glory hole, I have a liquor cupboard type arrangement but for laundry products. I get genuinely excited when there's a big spill or when its bed change day and I have to do laundry. DP and I watched a TV programme once about domestic labour which said women tend to do the 'dirty jobs' even when domestic labour is fairly equally split. DP started making a conscious effort to do the laundry. I warned him off on pain of death 😂

I'm also really weird about buying plants. I love browsing for plants but I get huge anxiety whenever it comes to actually making a decision and buying them. I get all overwhelmed with worries about them dying or looking shit. It's not at all about fear of wasting money on them, I have no idea what it is. Garden centres are like an out-of-body experience for me: I am so calm when browsing around all the lovely things and then a nervous wreck when it comes to actually picking some plants up.

I'm otherwise a completely normal, functioning, rational, professional woman. At work, I'm unflappable and I have a generally pretty relaxed outlook on life. But washing and plants send me a bit bonkers.

What are you weird about?

Why on earth do you only eat alpen from a tea cup?? 😊

For some reason it gets the milk/alpen ratio just right. 😅

Tea towels. I have a dishwasher. People use them to dry their hands or brush crumbs and I always think eww dirty now. I am not a clean freak at all, so this is just me being weird. Don’t own one.

I can't wash my hands in the kitchen sink, I have to go to the bathroom. I would never use a tea towel to dry my hands.

I’ve never thought of this idea, but now that you’ve said it, I’m tempted to ask the same thing of my partner… it sounds as though it really would “up” the excitement level, and that to me,is kinda better than the actual gift !
Trouble is, if he asked me to do the same for him, I’d not be able to feel safe that he wasn’t peeking…

If you do this, let me know how it goes: it does indeed "up the excitement", a bit like shaking a wrapped present to try to hear what's inside. If he asks for it, and you're worried about him peeping, then you need to blindfold him properly. It's always a tightly tied scarf that's used on me - much harder to peep out of than one of those airline masks, for instance. And @Nerdynerdynerd maybe it is a kink, but that doesn't bother me.

@TracyBeakerSoYeah @happinessischocolate I'm another sock avoider, I have been since childhood. I can't stand trainer socks - I wear trainers without socks most of the year, although less so in this hot weather (sandals instead). I loved it that at primary school in the 1980s, we were made to wear shoes without socks as we walked from the classroom to the assembly hall for PE.

I like my washing to look colour coordinated if at all possible when hanging on the washing line. I also seem to dress in the same colours my house is decorated in 🤷‍♀️

It’s a secret message, I had the Knowhow Book of Spycraft, which described secret codes in colours of clothes on lines, and flowers in vases in windows.

Natsku · 01/07/2025 07:59

I don't think I have so many weird ones myself. I mean dishes need to go in the dishwasher a certain way but that's just logical, not weird. I do have my preferred seat at the lunch table at work though and won't sit anywhere else, to the point that I will tell anyone, even managers, to get out of my seat if they've sat in it.

But my DD on the other hand... she will only use a certain fork to eat dinner with so I have to hide it in a different section of the cutlery drawer so no one else uses it accidentally. It was part of a set of red handled cutlery and all the other ones broke so I'm just waiting for, and dreading, the day it finally breaks. She never uses a knife at home, only that fork.

All cupboard doors and drawers have to be shut. If I take something out of a cupboard but leave it open because I will return it in a minute, she will still shut the door.

Certain foods don't touch so if we have rice or pasta with dinner I have to put them in a separate bowl for her.

I would be concerned but at school she uses whatever cutlery there is, eats whatever food is served even if its touching or even all mixed up, and I assume doesn't shout at her teachers to shut doors, so her quirks are home only quirks so won't bother her in life.

This is so funny my greyhound has this (she was trained this way) I have to walk on her right or she won’t move. It now also feels wrong to me otherwise so we always position ourselves correctly on each walk automatically now. It’s something I really love about our walks weirdly!

My last 2 dogs were mother and son, and insisted on walking side by side in a certain pattern when on the lead. Mum had to be on the left, and son on the right.

JFDIYOLO · 01/07/2025 09:47

My bathroom towels must always be small, medium and large from the same set. Mixing colours is the beginning of the end. So when the laundry is dry I roll small into medium into large towel to form a fat sausage that I can then just take out on Saturday morning for the big changeover.

What is MOD?

A youth fashion and music culture early to mid 60s and then 1979 revival fuelled by the release of Quadrophenia the film and music taken from the who album of the same name.

afaloren · 01/07/2025 10:48

Car radio must be on 8. TV used to be 5 or 0 until DH set it up so I can’t tell anymore and it’s been brilliant.

Make my shopping list in the order I’m going around the store and get very worked up if they move stuff.

Play my daily word games in the exact same order every day.

Go to sleep with blackout blinds closed, fan on (all year round) and I actually take the fan with me when I go away; can’t sleep without it.

Fold my towels in a very specific way I saw on Anthea Turner Perfect Housewife years ago! It’s just about the only thing I took from that show.

Steelworks · 01/07/2025 11:00

Is anyone else a little self conscious about how they hang washing out today?!

(For the record, generally matching, although a few non-matching to satisfy the non-matchers).

ChocolateCinderToffee · 01/07/2025 04:01

Nope, I worry about objects feeling left out or slighted.

I was always last to be picked for teams at school.

Ah yes, me too!

JFDIYOLO · 01/07/2025 16:09

Whenever I put something into the charity bag to go, I tell it 'thankyou for your service'. A moment appreciating what it was makes it easier to let it go.

Are you a Strike & Robin fan by any chance?

Books. I don't want a brand new hardback - I really dislike them. I want a soft, used paperback that has been read lots of times, by lots of people - but NOT one that is falling apart and losing pages.

I don't want a Kindle. I like my worn paperback books. There is a comfort in holding them and reading from them.

And the smell, I love sniffing an old book!

Horses7 · 01/07/2025 18:50

RepoTheGeriatricOpera · 30/06/2025 17:22

Having the TV on anything that doesn't end in 5 or 0.

It literally makes me feel itchy and I can't stop thinking about it.

I can always tell as well.

I do similar on TV volume - it has to be matching digits eg 22 or 33 etc otherwise I’m totally sane!!

Rokerwriter · 01/07/2025 19:02

Another books one. I don't mind old or new books, pristine or smelly - but heaven forbid it's got a sticker on the cover. I'm now a self-trained sticky gunk removal expert - and get very upset if any stickiness remains.

battgirlatheart · 01/07/2025 19:07

I think I’m realising I’m neuro sparkly
I can only eat with certain forks and spoons at home. Certain glasses to drink from for different drinks. Ice cold coke is better in a very thin glass…it has to feel right
when I hear a song I see colours floating in my head
I associate days numbers and names with colours.
I remember explaining to my mum about someone at school and said it’s Sarah she’s purple as I thought everyone was colours and I felt so disgusted and misplaced in yellow class, relatively better in white.
when pregnant some colours made me sick

im repulsed by seeing arm pits in public but actually in the find men’s very attractive but not in a vest top
women in sleeveless tops or dresses makes me feel physically sick as does pierced belly buttons and women’s tattoos
god knows what it is but I genuinely feel nauseated

Lollipop81 · 01/07/2025 19:16

That is unusual 🤣🤣

DeeDoyle · 01/07/2025 19:28

People eating burgers upside down.....really bothers me lol

ThistleTits · 01/07/2025 19:33

How washing is hung on the line. Tops from bottom, bottoms from top. In a particular order, that I like.

TheKeeperOfTissues · 01/07/2025 19:35

wonderstuff · 30/06/2025 21:44

Discussed this with my dd yesterday, we decided even numbers, numbers divisible by 5 or 3 were okay (we’re both fine with 27), but people happy to have the volume on a prime number are psychopaths. Have no idea why this is important but it feels off to not have a preference.

I knew i was slightly odd but psychopath is a tad strong 😂😂
TV volume is on a prime number. If I can't hear it for some reason I go to the next one or will settle for a number ending in 5 if I HAVE to.
Before going to bed to turn the volume right down to another prime number so it doesn't blast the next time I switch it on 😊 (I also change it to a particular channel before I switch off too)

I am on a lot of medication. I find it easier to take the pills in one go (between 10-13) but have to tip my head back to swill them down. My family find this amusing. I now can't take a singular tablet without doing this .

I don't allow people to wash my dishes. I would only do them myself after they had left so why waste water?

Mostly I'm a 'don't touch my shit' person. I think I've been on my own such a long time, anybody in my space touching stuff makes me a bit ragey.

I'm a door/key checker. Pisses me off but haven't solved it yet 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cattery · 01/07/2025 19:38

Definitely laundry. My favourite job.
Only certain mugs can hang on the mug tree. One older mug has to be kept in the cupboard and that’s the only mug I can drink out of whilst I do the Wordle in the morning. So many other things but I won’t bore you with them x

I didn’t know that. Still looks odd to me though.

People who drink tea /coffee in the 'wrong' cup...

Oh, can't be doing with those people😂. Is it tea? Is it in a clean mug? On we go.
