What things are you a complete weirdo about?

I'm really weird about laundry. I genuinely love it. In my glory hole, I have a liquor cupboard type arrangement but for laundry products. I get genuinely excited when there's a big spill or when its bed change day and I have to do laundry. DP and I watched a TV programme once about domestic labour which said women tend to do the 'dirty jobs' even when domestic labour is fairly equally split. DP started making a conscious effort to do the laundry. I warned him off on pain of death 😂

I'm also really weird about buying plants. I love browsing for plants but I get huge anxiety whenever it comes to actually making a decision and buying them. I get all overwhelmed with worries about them dying or looking shit. It's not at all about fear of wasting money on them, I have no idea what it is. Garden centres are like an out-of-body experience for me: I am so calm when browsing around all the lovely things and then a nervous wreck when it comes to actually picking some plants up.

I'm otherwise a completely normal, functioning, rational, professional woman. At work, I'm unflappable and I have a generally pretty relaxed outlook on life. But washing and plants send me a bit bonkers.

What are you weird about?

I can't bear having dirty/sticky hands. I wear disposable or household gloves whenever I'm doing a messy job. I know I could wash my hands afterwards, but I hate the feel of it.

Don't think this is particularly weird but I only like drinking tea out of two specific mugs and they are both fairly large. I am sure I have lots more weird things I do

What is MOD?

Seriously?

JFDIYOLO · 01/07/2025 00:04

Chocolate biscuits - I must nibble the chocolate edges off all round before I eat the biscuit.

Box files - the design of box files has not changed in many decades and I have to shout 'box files' when I spot a shelf full in a vintage TV drama like Scotland Yard or Gideon's Way.

Pants - I fold them edge to edge then edges to fold then up and up then stack them in a small cardboard box so I can see exactly how many pairs I have and what colour.

Books - I pull all books to the front of the shelf so even though the height, width, colour, typeface etc are all different, that one single piece of uniformity is SO pleasing

OneFineDay13 · 01/07/2025 00:07

Thought of another one. I cant do the dishes, or even wipe one surface, clean the bathroom etc without wearing rubber gloves. I just can't do it lol . I think I hate touching dirty cloths and really the dirty water itself

Not really something I do….more a ‘just me’ thing.

I thought everyone was the same until I spoke about it and I was called an utter weirdo !!!

when I count in my head, numbers are colours and shapes, I'm pretty number blind anyway….a bit like dyslexia but with numbers.

for example, 1 is a white circle, 2 is a dark blue rectangle, 3 is a yellow triangle, and so on, and then multiples when you get into double figures etc.

yes I’m weird, but evidently, it is a ‘thing!!!’

Sounds like you might have synaesthesia, which is really cool (my FIL has it and it's fascinating)

Everyone I’ve mentioned it to in real life thinks my present wrapping foible is weird, but we love it. I enjoy hearing the wrapping almost as much as I enjoy opening them on the day itself. Some people have said “why not just turn your back?” I can’t do that, the temptation to flick my head round is too great, so I have to be blindfolded.

Genuinely wondering if this is some weird kink 🤔

abracadabra1980 · 01/07/2025 00:46

I like my washing to look colour coordinated if at all possible when hanging on the washing line. I also seem to dress in the same colours my house is decorated in 🤷‍♀️

I always have to have the TV volume on an even number. I get twitchy if it isn't.

Edited

I won’t have any volume set to 13..

beforetherain20 · 01/07/2025 01:06

Get anxious if I don’t have a drink with me and a tissue. No idea why!

I have different mugs for morning and afternoon!

While my DH wraps my presents, I like to be in the room. (I am blindfolded, because otherwise I would certainly try to look at them!) I find the sound of this very comforting, knowing that he’s preparing something special for me right under my nose. I feel cheated if he wraps one without me there!

I’ve never thought of this idea, but now that you’ve said it, I’m tempted to ask the same thing of my partner… it sounds as though it really would “up” the excitement level, and that to me,is kinda better than the actual gift !
Trouble is, if he asked me to do the same for him, I’d not be able to feel safe that he wasn’t peeking…

Cutlery. For anything sweet (yoghurt, ice-cream) must be the tiniest fine spoon. For something with rice or couscous, even if it is topped with a soupy curry, must be medium sized fork.
Cups are the same too. I cannot drink tea from a cup with a thick edge. Coffee or hot chocolate would only be appropriate in a slightly chunkier cup.

BebbanburgIsMine · 01/07/2025 03:30

I can’t stand leftover food of any kind, seeing things on plates just makes me feel sick. DD scrapes whatever is left into the food bin, and takes it out, as I cannot bear to see or touch it.

Also, if any gravy or sauce is spilled on a part of the plate with the above I have to clean the spilled bit up, or I can’t eat the rest.

Hate touching bins too, I always scrub my hands after.

Mumofsoontobe3 · 01/07/2025 03:31

Putting clean bedding on the bed. DH just can't do it properly. Once he put the bedding on back to front, he sent DS1 downstairs to tell me what happened and that daddy needed help. It's an unspoken rule now that it's my job. Thankfully he does his fair share of other household tasks! We won't talk about him flooding the kitchen by using gel inside the drum and inside the drawer. He's banished from laundry duties. __

Mumofsoontobe3 · 01/07/2025 03:33

I'm another for can't touch bins. Especially the food bin 🤢

I don't like leaving any type of cutlery on their own in the dishwasher amongst a group of other cutlery. I have this nagging feeling that they will be unkind to it. I also don't like accidentally leaving one of them behind when I put them away in case the others think it is somehow inferior or I hurt its feelings. Actually, it's not just cutlery, I have these feelings about lots of things.
Now I come to think of it, I'm completely crackers, aren't I!

Nope, I worry about objects feeling left out or slighted.

I was always last to be picked for teams at school.

Pleased to see that I'm not the only weirdo that does this 😂

Also I hate socks as it feels like my feet are being suffocated so I never wear them unless I'm wearing trainers & out running.

Countrylife2002 · 01/07/2025 05:29

Still reading through but has anyone said loo roll must be the right way round (over not under). I find myself changing it round in public toilets sometimes .

Allthesnowallthetime · 30/06/2025 22:10

If I am walking with someone they have to be on my right hand side. Just feels wrong otherwise.

This becomes a problem when I walk with someone who also needs the other person to walk on their right hand side.

This is so funny my greyhound has this (she was trained this way) I have to walk on her right or she won’t move. It now also feels wrong to me otherwise so we always position ourselves correctly on each walk automatically now. It’s something I really love about our walks weirdly!

I hear you on this - my monthly WoB delivery is heaven for this exact reason.

I got Waterstones vouchers for my birthday and flip flopped for ages on what to buy because I don't really like new shiny books. I've got Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche's new book arriving in hard back - I might have to drop it in the bath to make it feel more homely before I get down to it properly!

I'm the opposite, much preferring hardbacks. I will only buy a paperback with reluctance, if it's something I urgently want to read and it's not available in hardback.

piscofrisco · 01/07/2025 05:47

Names. Specifically names that are shortened versions of the ‘proper’ name being given as the child’s actual name. So Jamie on the birth certificate instead of James for example. Fine to give the proper name then nickname it for daily use. I just like the ‘proper’ name to be used officially . I’m aware it affects the kids with these names in no way at all. It just annoys me and makes me feel Judgy. It’s the only thing I’m snobby about-no idea where it comes from.
I now have a step child with a name like this. It almost gave me the ick that dh would do such a thing 😂

I think taxis are unimaginably extravagant and wouldn’t take one even in a country where they are cheap. I’d always walk or get the bus. It isn’t financial, I can afford to take taxis, I’ve just been brought up to think it is decadent and can’t bring myself to do it.

DH is weird about cutlery. He has particular fork and spoon preferences, depending on what he is eating (so rice, soup, dessert and cereals all require specific spoons). He gets most upset if he has to use the wrong one - will go off and wash up the correct one.

I only like certain spoons for my cereal, and will wash one up also. I’m fine if I’ away.
