What is this Vinted scam?

On Vinted there are loads of really amazing things like brand new Dyson hair drier, make up sets etc but for really weird specific prices like £8.98/£6.78 etc and they also have no reviews.

Obviously too good to be true but what exactly does the seller get out of this? I'm sure if you order you won't get the goods BUT then the seller doesn't get paid so what exactly do they get out of it?

I am not sure but they are very easy to spot. Weird usernames, selling only one item or various random items. What I don’t understand is why Vinted does not have the capability to block them straight away.

Weird isn't it? Easily spotted and they won't get paid until the buyer accepts the item so what on earth do they get out of it?

Low enough price to be annoying so if they send something rubbish instead, when you raise it with Vinted, they will ask for you to return it at your cost which will cost you a few pounds and you may just forget it instead of paying for it to be returned.

LoudSnoringDog · 29/06/2025 19:50

I had this with some lulu Guinness luggage I tried to purchase. I went on a vinted fb page and someone said it’s to get your name and address. I’ve had no unusual activity on my address so can’t confirm if that’s correct

No because the seller doesn't get paid unless you accept the order.

What would they do with it?

They can go through the phone book for addresses surely?

They don't have your address do they? I've never had anyone's address when I've sold something on there.

They do because when you click to buy, the only option is Royal Mail, not the inpost boxes.

And what will they do with your address, that doesn't make sense, addresses aren't private, you can get an address from Google maps?

Just saw a whole bundle of Liz Earle stuff for 8.98 on there. Looked at their other stuff and everything is the same price, brand perfume etc.
No reviews. I don't get it either

MeringueOutang · 03/07/2025 07:34

Surely the scam is that it's all fake and they're selling it when Vinted admin can't catch up with them, then deleting the unsold listings before Vinted can do anything about it.

I suppose a name and matching address of someone who is gullible / naive / desperate enough to save money that they might fall for a more complex / expensive scam….

I sent my daughter the Liz Earle stuff and asked if a scam.
She said the bots go crazy between 12 - 7am!!!!

No because the seller doesn't get paid unless you accept the order.

You get a certain amount of time to raise an issue.

There will be enough people who don't do this and who don't pursue a refund that they will make ££.

Lots of people are really not good at following these sorts of admin procedures within a timeframe. Enough that scammers can exploit it.

Others will decide their time is worth more, so will let it go for a few £, as PP said.

The seller isn't paid unless the buyer accepts the order and says everything is ok.

I reckon it's what a PP said - matching up names, addresses and level of gullibility to sell on.

BikkieTime · 03/07/2025 07:49

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/07/2025 07:44

The seller isn't paid unless the buyer accepts the order and says everything is ok.

There is a time limit to do this. Otherwise buyers could just avoid paying.

If you don't click everything is ok and don't pursue an issue with Vinted, the payment defaults through.

Enough people will let it default that, en masse, you make some money. Others will raise an issue and then decide they can't be bothered once the seller starts arguing and refusing to pay return postage.

I’ve noticed loads of these this morning ! Odd prices and zero rating . People have liked the product too . I’ve liked one to see if it suddenly disappears .

MissFizzyPop · 03/07/2025 08:20

Noticed absolutely loads of these this morning, especially Teva sandals 🤷🏽‍♀️

As someone who has sold quite a lot recently, so many buyers just leave it the two days. Personally I always click as I feel guilty leaving them without the money when the goods are fine but I’d say at least half my buyers haven’t.
