Happy Flying Ant Day

It's hot and muggy and DD3 wants to go in her paddling pool but the garden is swarming and I've locked us inside like it's 28 days later.

We are out of and powder and are down to less than half a bottle of spray.

Thoughts and prayers

Few here today (Bucks), but there were swarms in Manchester when we were there about ten days ago.

None at all here in N.E England...just the usual wingless variety shuffling about and complaining when I take the lid of the compost bin..aka "Ant Towers"

indianrunnerduck · 29/06/2025 18:23

No sign of them here on the coast in Devon. I am very chilled about insects usually but flying ants really freak me out 😱 I am relying on the herring gulls to eat them all.

I have a whole nest of flying ants which have just appeared IN MY KITCHEN

Me too! Watched the wee bastards getting in through a tiny crack in my patio door surround.

WinterFrogs · 29/06/2025 18:48

Please don't kill them! Ants are so important. This is when they mate. It'll be over in a couple of days.

This is a brilliant book about these amazing little creatures:

WinterFrogs · 29/06/2025 18:53

Meant to add this. It's so interesting!

Happy Flying Ant Day

No flying ants in the SWE but plenty of them without wings marching their army in tow through the back door and into our kitchen & then loop round back to the garden 🫣

I can't bear the thought of killing them!! So I'm hoping in a day or 2 they will go back to their nest underground 🤞🏼🙏🏻🤞🏼

One of the best days of the year for my chickens - they can’t believe the feast rising up before their eyes! The other good one is when the crane flies hatch out - bonanza!

Curlygirl06 · 29/06/2025 20:34

Wiltshire/ Somerset border, we had them earlier.

rak5a · 30/06/2025 18:39

Last year I didn’t know it was flying ant day and I opened our French doors AT NIGHT with the kitchen lights in n and the whole swarm came in a filled the kitchen. It was like a real live horror movie. Never again…

Magenta82 · 30/06/2025 18:44

The stuff of horror movies! Not sure I would ever recover!

Not here thank goodness
Bloody hate ants but FAD is shit as they pour out of our block paving like black smoke!

Sleighbells0625 · 30/06/2025 18:53

Had a few flying round the living room, pulled the curtain back and there’s a swarm/nest! 100s just huddled together and climbing the walls and window.
T’was awful! All have now been blasted with vinegar but we’re sure there’s a nest in the cavity walls! 😱😱

GerundTheBehemoth · 30/06/2025 18:59

I noticed on my way home just now that the sky was full of Mediterranean gulls wheeling about, which meant it must be a flying ant day here (SE Kent coast).

GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo · 30/06/2025 19:54

We got hit with the b**stards yesterday about the same time, hate the feckers.

I'm in the sw near Bristol

The queens go off to start new colony. A friend informed me they come over from Europe! They don't.About month ago, there were the larger eggs in our compost bins. They were nipping up from under the paving,I was just about to go and sit in the garden, first time yesterday. I don't like seeing them all rushing around, HOWEVER, I am very allergic to ant bites.. once my legs blew up like a sausage,it's couldn't swell anymore, bright red, and painful. I had been gardening in wellies. GP had a look with a torch, said there was a bite mark on my calf muscle. If I come across a nest whilst gardening,I'm off.

Hedjwitch · 30/06/2025 20:10

We have some in a huge tub filled with soil in our garden. They don't bother us. On FAD we just retreat and leave them to it.

Summerhillsquare · 30/06/2025 20:19

Flying ant day here in the north east.
