Lost passport 9 days before holiday

whitehear · 29/06/2025 12:56

So my ds went out last night and lost his passport whilst out. He’s due to go on holiday 8th July to Greece.

Anyone have any idea how he can get it replaced it time?

Well that was silly. Why did he take his passport out? Google appts for same day passports but they are often booked up and it's more difficult when the passport is lost.

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/06/2025 12:59

Did he lose it in a bar/pub ? If so it's worth him ringing round or popping in to see if its been handed in.

Myfridgeiscool · 29/06/2025 12:59

How old is he? If he’s over 18 the probability of getting it sorted will be higher.

whitehear · 29/06/2025 13:06

Yeah he was out and took it out for ID. I’ve told him he’s stupid for taking it out. He’s 21. I’ve been having a Google and it says lost passport you need an appointment and your new one will be sent out a week later by courier

My son was able to get one on the day by getting an appointment at our nearest passport office (Swansea for us 400 odd miles away ) Take photos and loads of id etc. This was a couple of years ago so I’m hoping they still do it for you

Loads of young people do now. I was gobsmacked a few years ago in a group interview and 1 girl had lost hers and I asked why she’d taken it on a night out. She looked at me like I had 3 heads and said the only ID bars accept is either passport or full driving licence (not provisional).

0ctavia · 29/06/2025 16:21

He needs to find a passport office anywhere in the country tomorrow with an appointment to use the one week fast track services. Then pay the fee and get himself there.

FrenchandSaunders · 29/06/2025 16:24

He’s got time to get a new one but it’ll be pricy.

I have three young adult children who all socialise , all of them look young enough to have to carry ID and none of them take their passport for ID.

The reason I know this is that I have all their passports locked away in my house for the exact reason that this thread is about. Which is, if they lose it before a holiday it will become MY problem not theirs.

Note that it’s the Mum here who is on Mn trying to to fix this. Not the son or the dad or the grandpa.

he’ll need to cancel the lost one before starting a new application. Replacement photographs and countersigning sorted before making the appointment.

Renew or replace your adult passport

How to apply, how long it takes, how much it costs, track your application, unexpired visas, replacing a damaged passport.

I have a 21 and 18 year old and they both use their driving licences, full ones now but used provisionals when they had them too.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 29/06/2025 18:36

Depending on where you live you can drive and collect one within 48 hours I think. We had to drive to Liverpool last minute. Think Durham have a place too up here. You could make a day of it.

My 18yo takes her provisional, it's accepted the same as a full licence everywhere and is not as costly to replace as a passport. It's also more portable.

OP the quickest service is a week. Report it lost straight away once you've rang around to check it hasn't been handed in.

0ctavia · 29/06/2025 18:48

You can drive even if you have lost your license ( as in misplaced it or had it stolen).

You can’t travel without a passport.

Only repeating what I was told 🤷‍♀️, weren’t as strict in my day. I believe they even scan passports now so they can’t be used twice as the same venue.

Onelifeonly · 29/06/2025 18:55

Mine use their provisional driving licences for ID. Eldest used to have driving lessons but youngest only got it for ID purposes. We keep their passports safe.

Sorry, no help to you OP! Though years ago mine was due to run out just before a holiday. I hadn't realised but when I did I just went to the local passport office - can't recall if it was sent or I picked it up.

DuckCootLoon · 29/06/2025 19:01

This is not a dig at the OP, because it's too late now, but taking a passport on a night out is a really bad idea. If you lose it and it's handed in to the police, they are not allowed to return it and have to send it back to the passport office.

why would a grand father be doing it when there is a parent?

its mumsnet. You are obviously going to get more women posting. You are clutching

dementedpixie · 29/06/2025 19:30

The fastest service for a lost passport is the 1 week service so he'd better make an appointment quickly. The 1 day service is only for an adult renewal.

He'd better get his arse in gear and get all the info together that he needs. Think he does the actual application online

Get a passport urgently

Renew or replace a passport urgently with the 1 day Premium service or the 1 week Fast Track service.

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 29/06/2025 19:33

Retrace his steps. Ring every pub. I worked in a night club and we had a box full. If I found a driving licence I would find the nearest college /uni and ring there and try to reunite them.

RampantIvy · 29/06/2025 19:36

and said the only ID bars accept is either passport or full driving licence (not provisional)

DD carries a provisional driving licence around for ID. No-one has refused it. She is nearly 25 but looks much younger.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 29/06/2025 19:43

Totally possible to get same day - where I used to work was a passport office and there were usually several people arriving on the early train dashing for emergency passport appointments.

Can't get a 1 day service for a lost passport according to the website

It's not a renewal though, it's a lost passport
Renewals require you to submit the old passport
Lost passports require a countersignature and often an interview. They are not the same type of application
