So my ds went out last night and lost his passport whilst out. He’s due to go on holiday 8th July to Greece.

Anyone have any idea how he can get it replaced it time?

Your DS will also need to cancel the passport since it’s been lost before he can apply for a replacement.

whitehear · 29/06/2025 20:55

Thanks all for your comments.

Hes found it. He left it in the taxi on the way home and now back.
He knows now not to take it out again.

Lucky boy!

I lost my passport a few days before holiday once it’s actually harder to get a replacement than a straight renewal. You can do it in a week though-no less
this will be an important life lesson.
it was for me!

GrandTheftWalrus · 29/06/2025 23:55

I lost my passport when I was 18. Had no idea until my parents were contacted by the police as they had it.

Then the passport office lost mine when I was renewing it and updating my name. So I had to report it lost as apparently they couldnt then my new one was issued about a day later. So they knew they'd lost it even though they tried to say I hadn't sent it when they had all the other documents that were in the same envelope.

and said the only ID bars accept is either passport or full driving licence (not provisional)

DD carries a provisional driving licence around for ID. No-one has refused it. She is nearly 25 but looks much younger.

Isn't there also an official proof of age card?

Glad that it's now been found but hopefully he'll now make alternative arrangements as carrying a passport around is obviously high risk for it being lost. I bet it just fell out of his pocket.

There is a Citizens card but nowhere accepts it. It's driving licence or passport pretty much everywhere.

It's the only reason DD has a provisional licence.

Well he didn't find it! Luckily someone found it for him, he needs to sort himself out really.

He left it in the back of the taxi.
It fell out of his pocket on the way home.
He called the taxi company and the taxi driver had handed it in.

Needs to sort himself out! What for, something dripping out of his pocket?
Yes in future he will know not to take his passport out but to say he needs to sort himself out!

This happened to me years ago, luckily I called the bar the next day and they had it. Have you tried that?

Have you tried reading the OP's updates?

The passport has been found.

@RampantIvy is the heat getting to you?! Absolutely no need for rudeness! The second page didn’t load.

@RampantIvy just an unkind person then! I hope you find happiness.

NerrSnerr · 02/07/2025 06:54

I’m glad he found it!

I’m 42 and sometimes used to take my passport on nights out (usually when I had lose my driving licence on another night out!) I think the main difference is that it was 100% my responsibility, I had to replace my manu drunken losses.

Zezet · 02/07/2025 07:05

Now that all ended well, I am amazed at how willing British people are to put up with a minimum replacement time of one week for such a document. Other countries have emergency procedures for next day or even (expensive) six-hour turnaround. Often in your own village!

What if a family member is in a car crash abroad? You need to get to a funeral? (Which also doesn't take weeks in other countries!) Heaven forbid, life happens and you were human enough to mislay a passport.

I can't tell if the British are exceptionally patient or just utterly unaware of how insanely slow their passport services are?

How do you suggest that the average British member of the public instigates such a change? They could start petitions, run for Parliament, glue themselves to the gates of Downing Street etc etc and they'd get nowhere.

Most people don't have the time and energy for that and even if they did, a week to replace lost passports is probably problem number 893 at best in a long list of annoyances we face in the UK.

Zezet · 02/07/2025 08:16

I don't suggest they do anything! But I do notice that there are plenty of threads of plenty of topics where people say "government policy on this is shite" and on passport threads it tends to be "well what do you expect, if you lose it it's obviously your own fault and bad planning". The expectation just doesn't seem to be there at all.

Very few people are saying "you should just plan your dental visits better because the NHS is shite" or "no it's not a disgrace that applying for social benefit X takes Y weeks, you should know what to expect" or any of the likes.

But British people don't seem to see the right to a passport in the same way at all, even accounting for differing degrees of importance.

And anyway, I was wondering whether it's patience or whether it's presumption it's like this everywhere. I wasn't wondering why it's not top of the political agenda.

Radiatorvalves · 02/07/2025 08:19

Glad you found it. FWIW DS was using his elder brothers provisional licence most of last year. He never got refused even though he looks nothing like him!

Marinamay44 · 02/07/2025 08:29

Isn't it a bit stupid, that we can't travel without a passport?

It is the only I.D. that the airports will accept.
Why? A passport is just photo I.D.
It is a form of control.

Airports should accept driving licences aswell

madaboutpurple · 02/07/2025 08:39

I am glad about that. I reckon your son would be as well to buy the driver a box of chocolates eg roses ,quality street. . I always use the same company and they have left a few things over the years of mine in their cab office. I always send in a box for the office staff and a box for the driver. Your son has been saved a lot of hassle and can now go on holiday. He would be better to get a provisional licence and take that with him from now on .Lesson learnt.

A passport is an indication of your immigration rights into other countries - if you're not flying to another country who wants to see your passport, you can use your driving licence as ID, eg when going from UK to Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel islands, or to other airports in the UK (as long as you're not going by Ryanair).

Europeans within the Schengen area can travel within the area using their national ID cards.

The majority of the British population has declared that it doesn't want these conveniences.

I have flown with every different airline from UK to Ireland. I have always been asked for my passport. I asked could I use my driver's licence a couple of times, and they said no.

dementedpixie · 02/07/2025 09:15

@Marinamay44 it depends on the airline as some e.g. aer lingus will accept a driving licence as well as a passport
