What were you doing in 1995?

It was the year I turned 13. There were girls in my class who were really into the grunge scene and were devastated by Kurt Cobain’s suicide. A few of them were even starting to sneak into The Whirligig on weekends. I was boringly tame and innocent by comparison and was still watching Nickelodeon. Clarissa Explains It All and The Secret World of Alex Mack were my favourite shows.

I did though love My So-Called Life on Channel 4. ER and Friends had arrived in the UK but hadn’t really caught on yet I don’t think? Nobody I knew had Internet at home and only a few grownups had mobile phones which were just for making (very pricey!) calls back then.

How about you?

Kind of a mishmash of several of the answers above! Just finished second year of university, going to Glastonbury to see The Cure, at the same time absolutely adored Clarissa Expalins it All, The Adventures of Pete and Pete and reruns of The Monkees on Nickelodeon, bemoaning Britpop as the death of 'proper' indie music

I’d forgotten all about Pete and Pete. Thanks for that! Also ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ and ‘Roundhouse.’

Caring for my first baby, with PND, whilst my husband was largely absent, 600 miles away from my home….not a happy time.

he’s almost 31 now …where has the time gone !

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 29/06/2025 20:03

Working in an office during the day, volunteering at relate one evening a week and going out getting off my tits every weekend. Literally Friday through Sunday- total blank.

Makes me need to go to bed just thinking about it now! 🤣

I’m sorry you went through that. Was he ever brought to justice?

He is currently in prison for what he did to me. Thanks for asking.

NW3Lady · 29/06/2025 20:20

Glad to hear that @Embarrassingstories

I was completing a PGCE to be a secondary teacher - having a glorious summer of holidays with friends and feeling like the world was my oyster. Was planning to head off to be a youth worker for a voluntary year out before starting work the following year.

I remember dancing to Pulp and to ‘Saturday Night’ and doing the actions. And I know my weekly rent was £34 a week.

Yep, it's her 30th birthday tomorrow.

She was only starting school yesterday...or so it seems!

It was the year I turned 9. I remember we spent the summer in Finland, staying at my grandad's and his house burnt down and my brand new hedgehog soft toy was lost in the fire though thankfully not a lot else was lost because it was so slow burning they got a lot out. We spent the rest of the holiday staying on various houses' floors.

30 years later I'm in my grandad's (rebuilt) house again and planning on visiting the amethyst mine again that we visited that summer. And being bitten by mosquitoes again.

First half of 1995 was end of first year at university in the midlands, Sept 1995 I went into second year. I spent the holidays not back in the north of England but living with a then partner in Essex. My family had never really travelled much across the UK so to be in multiple places felt very different & quite exciting to rather parochial me!

Over lunch on Saturday my partner & I were discussing how the mid to late nineties felt very modern & complex to those of us who were born in the mid seventies, but now we look back it seems such a simple life - no real internet, so no online shopping or life, very few mobile phones, far less choice & demand in life generally. I suppose every generation feels like this relative to where they were & where they are now, but I do think this was a particularly different era - the nature of life has changed so much in 30 years.

My weekly rent in private student digs in the East Midlands 1995/6 was £30. I remember that the previous year had been the first time that a full year’s university accommodation cost more than the full grant. This was for a single 1960s built room with a wash basin & shared basic bathroom & kitchen with a 2 ring hob, nothing like an en suite, parking, & no internet as it had not really been invented yet. The surging cost nearly triggered a riot 😀
