What were you doing in 1995?

It was the year I turned 13. There were girls in my class who were really into the grunge scene and were devastated by Kurt Cobain’s suicide. A few of them were even starting to sneak into The Whirligig on weekends. I was boringly tame and innocent by comparison and was still watching Nickelodeon. Clarissa Explains It All and The Secret World of Alex Mack were my favourite shows.

I did though love My So-Called Life on Channel 4. ER and Friends had arrived in the UK but hadn’t really caught on yet I don’t think? Nobody I knew had Internet at home and only a few grownups had mobile phones which were just for making (very pricey!) calls back then.

How about you?

Ecstasy mostly.

Eastermuppet · 29/06/2025 16:05

Having my 21st while doing Camp America. We all got a long weekend for 4th July, went to a college party with kegs of beer and later got thrown out of cheap motel for being in the pool drunk in the middle of the night, also smoking soft pack marlboro reds, great times.

I was in my 1st / 2nd year of university - one in the best years of my life!

Same here. Met my now dh too.

BCBird · 29/06/2025 16:08

Started my teaching career. Just about to finish.

I was 13 and very similar to you! Absolutely loved ‘my so called life’ and Jared Leto!
I was very innocent and navigating difficult friendships at secondary school and realizing being in an all girls school wasn’t for me.

Glad it wasn’t just me!

In 1995 I was 37 and my kids were early teens. We went on a two-week camping holiday to France in June. In those days, it was legal for children to go on holiday during term-time, providing the headteacher had given permission. I had written to him the previous winter, requesting the leave of absence, and he was happy to oblige.

We had holidays outside of term-time several times during the late 1980s through to the late 1990s. All were pre-approved.

StopStartStop · 29/06/2025 16:12

I was 47. Raising a child, trying to keep my job, working myself to the bone.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 29/06/2025 16:13

Taking my GCSEs

Pipsquiggle · 29/06/2025 16:15

A Levels

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/06/2025 16:23

PhD student. Skint but very happy. Spent far too much lurking after a bloke that looked like Jack Whitehall, was not bad at all at sex but otherwise pretty rubbish at life.

Glastonbury!

Me too!

I was 15, my dad died. It was the worst year of my life. I never quite got over it.

OldWomanInACardigan · 29/06/2025 16:29

I was 36 and (with my husband) bringing up our kids, then aged 14 and 11. My lovely mum died that summer, and my FIL on NY Eve.

RampantIvy · 29/06/2025 16:30

We had a hot, dry summer so we were saving all tap water in a washing up bowl to tip onto the garden. Tankers of water from Kielder travelled daily down the A1 to try and boost the reservoirs near Huddersfield. By September standpipes had been erected at the end of the street, then it started to rain.

I got my first mobile phone and used it to ring the police to notify them of a horse loose on the road.

Ontheedgeofit · 29/06/2025 16:35

16 turning 17 and penultimate year of high school.
Skinny, blonde, athletic, pretty hot and intelligent (top ten).

Never lost the intelligence although I do regret that I didn’t put it to better use and my gosh… wish I had appreciated the other 4 so much more. I was oblivious to them all at the time.

Doing my A levels and going to uni later in the year 🥰 a brilliant time.

Same here Dr!

I was 9 years old. We’d moved to a new house, which I loved, as it was near a little woods. Me and my siblings used to spend hours making dens and climbing trees.

The most difficult decision I ever had to make was whether I’d meet my friends on my bike, skateboard or roller blades.

I used to love Alex Mac too and Saved By The Bell.
I’d for bottom about California Dreams! I loved all those American teen sitcoms. Hang time and Sister Sister too.

I remember my older brothers listening to Oasis a lot and one of them used to dress abit like Liam.G 😂

My sister and I shared a bedroom. We used to sneak snacks upstairs from the kitchen and eat them whilst doing dancing competitions. We also used to religiously tape the top 40 ( on a cassette, of course) and record ourselves introducing the songs, like radio hosts.

I had a cracking childhood.

Similar here. I was 22 and my 24 year old brother died. Life has never been the same.

Jujujudo · 29/06/2025 17:08

I graduated from university in 1995. I’d done a useless media degree which left me with no skills other than being able to drink myself into a stupor and snog unsuitable men. I made the rash decision to spend a year volunteering on a kibbutz which was great fun. Then I returned and started my PGCE and became a teacher. I can’t believe it was 30 years ago!!!!

NiftyScroller27 · 29/06/2025 17:13

I was 6 so probably playing with Barbie, watching a lot of cartoons and enjoying the local sweet shop

I was just 23 and had just been told that my mum’s cancer had come back and was terminal. I spent the next 6 months caring for her, (which was the making of me to be honest), and she died mid-Dec 1995 at the age of 53. Next week I’ll be as old as she ever got to be and I’m having a life reset starting with a much wanted holiday abroad.

Sorry if that puts a downer on the thread but you did ask!

This is almost exactly what I was doing in 95 except that my mum was 51 and I went past that age a couple of years ago. Sending love to you.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 29/06/2025 17:16

I was 23. Qualified as a nurse but left it after six months to go and do a degree full time. Three years into a relationship with now DH.
1990’s. Some of the best times of my life.

realsavagelike · 29/06/2025 17:16

Kind of a mishmash of several of the answers above! Just finished second year of university, going to Glastonbury to see The Cure, at the same time absolutely adored Clarissa Expalins it All, The Adventures of Pete and Pete and reruns of The Monkees on Nickelodeon, bemoaning Britpop as the death of 'proper' indie music

Eyesopenwideawake · 29/06/2025 17:17

Moved from London to Dublin.

Norfolklass2428 · 29/06/2025 17:54

I was 17 and doing my A levels at boarding school. I crushed on a girl at school common at boarding school in 1995. I also had a boyfriend that I was seeing that summer back home my parents massively disapproved of him. He was the love of my life @17

I had not long passed my driving test and my VW beetle was my pride and joy.

Away from school, I was into rock and grunge and my Mum disliked how I dressed in floral long skirts, a fisherman's jumper with holes that I cut into it, cherry red dm boots, my pop swatch watch , carpet bag from oxfam or my body shop cotton tote bag with a slogan on.
The look was completed with my hair in a low pony tail with one bit hanging down at the side, a splash of dewberry perfume and heather shimmer on my lips.

Used to swan about with my Walkman/ discman listening to Bon Jovi,, Nivarna et al.
