What were you doing in 1995?

It was the year I turned 13. There were girls in my class who were really into the grunge scene and were devastated by Kurt Cobain’s suicide. A few of them were even starting to sneak into The Whirligig on weekends. I was boringly tame and innocent by comparison and was still watching Nickelodeon. Clarissa Explains It All and The Secret World of Alex Mack were my favourite shows.

I did though love My So-Called Life on Channel 4. ER and Friends had arrived in the UK but hadn’t really caught on yet I don’t think? Nobody I knew had Internet at home and only a few grownups had mobile phones which were just for making (very pricey!) calls back then.

How about you?

Preparing to get married (again) and just discovering I was pregnant with my 2nd (oops)

still together with a 35 and a 29 year old.

god, and 1995 was only a couple of years ago!

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/06/2025 13:14

Getting married very (far too) young. Divorced now (although I put up with him for waaaay too long).

NecklessMumster · 29/06/2025 13:16

Watching Pulp at Glastonbury

Mademetoxic · 29/06/2025 13:19

I was 3 years old that year and in nursery. Other than that no idea!

I imagine it was all about Tots TV and the park 😀

ShakespeareInTurmoil · 29/06/2025 13:24

I was 8 years old and still at a rather bleak private school. We moved house the following and I went to the village state primary which was much more cheerful :)

I don't want to derail the thread, but Kurt Cobain died in 1994. I remember exactly where I was when I found out. I was a student in my year abroad.

We were all still devastated in 1995 though! 😉

This thread has just reminded me how much I love this song so thank you @NW3Lady

Growing in the womb.

Ending a ten year relationship, applying for new jobs/retraining, and beginning life afresh . . . It was tough, but so worth it.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 29/06/2025 13:42

Finishing my GCSEs and starting my A levels. I had been horrendously bullied at the girls’ school I’d been at, so I left and went to six form college for A levels. Ended up being a great decision - I made some great mates, partied a lot (lots of indie clubs - the 90s had the best music) and still managed to get into my first choice uni.

They were great days.

Hordingshopaholic · 29/06/2025 13:44

I was 21 and went clubs and discos every weekend dancing. Lived on my own in a rented property in big city and enjoyed life….oh to be young and free again…

ImWearingPantaloons · 29/06/2025 13:45

I’d just graduated, took a couple of weeks off to go on holiday with my bestie, then home to start my first job

SinisterBumFacedCat · 29/06/2025 13:51

My first office job, working in admin. I was dumped by an arsehole and threw myself into creative stuff to get over it (very Taylor Swift) like producing a fanzine. I went to a lot of gigs and indie clubs, every Sunday I got the Northern line to Camden Market. I remember the Blur/Oasis battle of the bands being all over NME and Melody Maker. Life was good.

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 29/06/2025 13:51

Started Uni that year. Feel unbelievably lucky to have gone in that time period. We had the best music, Brit Pop plus the best dance scene. And no social media evidence of it 😆

chocolatelover91 · 29/06/2025 14:02

I was 4, so probably playing with Barbie dolls 🥲 the good old days!

notacooldad · 29/06/2025 14:03

I got pregnant in November.
I had a great summer with bf( now Dh)
We bought a house, had a boat, went away to Scotland everyweekend to go diving.
Life was good!

PinkSwatch · 29/06/2025 14:05

The year I met DH. I was in my second year of A Levels at sixth form. Moved in with him after a month, I was only 17! My parents weren't too happy. Grin

Cucumberinginplease · 29/06/2025 14:19

I was doing my GCSEs and starting A levels. I had a fabulous summer with my friends camping all over the UK thanks to the national express. I cannot believe out parents happily waved us off with no mobile phones and probably no contact details for the campsites we went to! We went to Devon, Wales x2 and Cornwall. Home for a bit imbetween to do washing, catch up on sleep, stock up on pasta n sauce and bean feast for our dinners before high tailing it off again. It was bloody wonderful!!!

Then A levels started, I found the clubbing scene and that too was wonderful!

Just the thought of it now makes me tired!

And yes, I was still sad about Kurt Cobain and the weather in my memory was fabulous!

Yes he did. There was one girl in particular was so affected that she still couldn’t stop talking about it a year later.

I was wrangling two-year-old twins. It's all a bit of a blur, tbh. I had no idea what was in the charts or what adults were watching on TV as I spent my evenings singing Nellie the Elephant, trying to lull them to sleep.

This sounds like me now tbh and mine aren’t even twins. Hats off to you.

Gave birth to my third, my only daughter. Decided to get divorced.

That makes me feel so old it was so long ago.

xWildFlowerx · 29/06/2025 14:27

I didn't exist yet until 3 years later 😂

namechangeGOT · 29/06/2025 14:27

At this time in 1995 I was in my final month of year 6! Waiting to go up to comp in September! I had just recovered from a fractured vertebrae after pissing about on a metal slide in a play area when it was drizzling! My best friend was Stacey, our birthdays were exactly the same a couple of hours apart, little did I know that the minute we got up to secondary school we would drift apart!

Globules · 29/06/2025 14:30

Finishing the most amazing year out, then starting uni.

With the best soundtrack going on to colour my life. Nothing beats 90s music imo.
