What were you doing in 1995?

It was the year I turned 13. There were girls in my class who were really into the grunge scene and were devastated by Kurt Cobain’s suicide. A few of them were even starting to sneak into The Whirligig on weekends. I was boringly tame and innocent by comparison and was still watching Nickelodeon. Clarissa Explains It All and The Secret World of Alex Mack were my favourite shows.

I did though love My So-Called Life on Channel 4. ER and Friends had arrived in the UK but hadn’t really caught on yet I don’t think? Nobody I knew had Internet at home and only a few grownups had mobile phones which were just for making (very pricey!) calls back then.

How about you?

I was 21, in my 2nd/3rd year of uni. I was skint, living in a house share with people I didn't really enjoy living with, my relationship was falling apart. TBH, I've had better times!

MyKingdomForACat · 29/06/2025 14:33

Second year of university. My darling niece was born. Met my now husband in December.

Watching Pulp at Glastonbury

Me too! In the front row.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 29/06/2025 14:37

Just finished y11 and getting ready to emigrate at the end of the August. That was a fucking brilliant summer.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/06/2025 14:38

I was 10 years old. Devouring Sweet Valley and Point Horror novels and binge watching Nickelodeon. Sunny days I was out on my bike riding through the fields and woods.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 29/06/2025 14:38

I was in the last year of my PhD, which I hated and it couldn't be over quick enough. 1996 was a far better year.

aredcar · 29/06/2025 14:43

I had just turned 10 and was finishing year 5. I spent my summer watching kids shows like Alex Mack and Clarissa explains it all and I think live and kicking back then? Or was it SMTV. And playing out all day every day with friends in my village. I was excited because I’d just found out my mum was having her third baby. It was a lovely summer

I was being regularly sexually assaulted by a family ‘friend’ at the age of 15.

I’m sorry you went through that. Was he ever brought to justice?

NormasArse · 29/06/2025 14:48

I had an 8 year old and was a single mum. We went camping a lot!

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 29/06/2025 14:50

3rd year at university

BackToRealitySigh · 29/06/2025 14:51

GCSE summer - best summer ever.
It was a really hot summer, spent most of it by my friends pool with her mum giving us jugs of Pimms, working in a softplay/crazy golf for fun money, hanging out at the beach, loads of house parties & Britpop. So much fun!

Lemonade2011 · 29/06/2025 15:09

I was 15/16 in 5th year at high school desperate to leave but had another left - was bullied relentlessly so wasn’t a happy time for me. Seems a long long time ago now thankfully

Scoobyblue · 29/06/2025 15:14

I was working in the City in a high powered job which I loved. Started seeing a man who I thought was the love of my life but turned out that he was actually engaged to someone else and he only told me a week before he got married to her. Seems ridiculous now but with fewer phones, social media etc it was easy to do back then…..

okydokethen · 29/06/2025 15:23

Year 7, awkward and trying to meet some friends - 1995-2000 turned out to be the most fun I’ve ever had, with friends I’ve kept.

TheBewleySisters · 29/06/2025 15:23

I was working in television, commuting from a gorgeous flat in Brighton to London. Out after work every night, drinks, dinner, parties, etc etc., and about to meet the man who is now my husband. I now live in the back of beyond and do sod all.

66babe · 29/06/2025 15:28

I had my last baby

Enchanted82 · 29/06/2025 15:35

I was 13 and very similar to you! Absolutely loved ‘my so called life’ and Jared Leto!
I was very innocent and navigating difficult friendships at secondary school and realizing being in an all girls school wasn’t for me.

Meadowfinch · 29/06/2025 15:50

Living my best life.

I was 32, had my own little house and a well paid international job that meant I flew all over Europe and could tack weekends and holidays on to work flights.

No regular boyfriend, just good friends to go partying with. 😊

BobbieTables · 29/06/2025 15:55

I was in lower sixth having a great time, listening to grunge and indie music, going to every gig that came through our town, getting smashed at the alternative night club every Friday night and doing my weekend job at Woolies.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 29/06/2025 15:55

I was 15 and obsessed with My So-called Life and spent all my time watching coming of age films.

DramaAlpaca · 29/06/2025 15:58

I had DS2 in February that year, so I was juggling him and his brother, who's only 16 months older. That year was a bit of a blur, but I do remember it was a lovely warm summer.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 29/06/2025 16:00

I turned 21 years old, was working as a care assistant having left my degree course in year 2. I met dh in December of that year and we are celebrating 25 years married this December.

I worked for a couple of years before going back to university to do my nurse training.

Cluborange666 · 29/06/2025 16:01

Started university. Instantly got pregnant. Had an abortion. Went a bit nuts. Came top in nearly all my exams.

Natsku · 29/06/2025 16:02

It was the year I turned 9. I remember we spent the summer in Finland, staying at my grandad's and his house burnt down and my brand new hedgehog soft toy was lost in the fire though thankfully not a lot else was lost because it was so slow burning they got a lot out. We spent the rest of the holiday staying on various houses' floors.
