Popular things you wouldn't even do for free... (Glastonbury for me)

Me? Glastonbury. There isn't enough vodka in Russia to get me there. Too many people, too much noise, hay fever, having to piss and shit (both of which I need to do a lot) in shared portaloos probably with no bog roll, not having a proper shower or proper anything wash wise, feeling sticky and unclean, not having a real bed to sleep in. The list goes on and on and on. If someone offered me £50,000 to go from the very beginning to the very end I'd probably consider it but even then I doubt I'd bite. If I did I'd probably die of misery by day two anyway. Utter, utter misery.

What's yours?

Poor you, you'd have a miserable time 😣

I have IBS and went to Bhutan and India several years ago. I used anti-bacterial gel frequently, especially after handling money and mostly stuck to hot food. I got away with it somehow, which is just as well, as I'm not sure how I'd have managed the squat toilets.

I wish I could understand all the hate for Dubai! I am a perfectly ordinary middle-aged (well, old i suppose!) person and I love it! To begin with, it's clean, safe, the people are kind and helpful, the hotels are fab, the restaurants are great and the sun shines! You don't have to spend all your time in the glitzy, sparkly part - the old town and the souks are fascinating, as is taking an abra across the creek.

I'm afraid I did not find it this way. I found it unbearably hot, the people were rude AF (especially the men who were very lecherous) and it was just really an unpleasant weird hostile atmosphere. My husband is Middle Eastern and agreed it was just horrible too

tralalal · 27/06/2025 10:16

Camping has to be the main one. Not for all the money in the world would I do it

wouldn’t go to a festival either and I wouldn’t go on a walking holiday

I wouldn’t do a U.K. summer holiday

but I really did love the cruise I went on. I enjoyed every second of it

You mean the actor of "Flubber" and "Mrs. Doubtfire"? Untalented?

She means Robbie Williams the singer from Take That, the British guy, not the American actor, who I may be wrong was Robin Williams...

MrsAvocet · 27/06/2025 10:19

Many of the things already mentioned don't appeal to me but as I can't stand the idea of Disneyland/world or cruising then my ultimate "not if you paid me" would have to be a Disney Cruise. I can't imagine one ounce of enjoyment could be obtained from being at sea in a floating block of flats with the bloody Mouse and co.

Disneyland. Loud, jangly, overcrowded, overwhelming consumerist hell. And people pay half a year’s salary to go.

This.

Doitrightnow · 27/06/2025 10:23

Have botox or other cosmetic surgery.
Sky dive
Eat baked beans (so slimy)
Drink coffee (it gives me splitting headaches)
Get drunk
Go to a rave

HangingOver · 27/06/2025 10:24

Edinburgh bloody fringe. I used to have to go for work every year and I hated it.

Sweetleftfood · 27/06/2025 10:26

TBH if it was free I may do it but would never ever pay for
Yoga retreats
Activity/holiday or even an organised group holiday with a theme
Watch Mrs Brown's boys - having had to endure Christmas specials at in-laws I really just don't get anyone finding it funny
Hen-do's
Expensive beauty treatments
Outlets
Festivals
Dubai - liked Las Vegas though

Totally agree. For over a decade we have toured inland Spain visiting and staying in not far off maybe 80 towns and cities. The architecture is gobsmacking...the castles, cathedrals, the moorish influences, the plaza mayors in every place, the fiestas and celebrations, the tapas, the cobbled streets....I could go on.
Spain is the most beautiful country

Some people think Spain is just the costas. Asturias is beautiful with amazing food.

penpotdot · 27/06/2025 10:28

Probably too many things to mention to be honest, I agree with many of the things on here. I would maybe do a frictionless Glastonbury where somehow I was able to avoid the crowds and sleep in a comfy bed, also only if I got to pick the line up. I'd also do a ski holiday but without the skiing, I'd go for a trudge in the snow then sit in my Chalet eating fondue while looking at snowy mountains.

Cattenberg · 27/06/2025 10:32

My niche gripe about the Fringe is that the toilets in the Pleasance Courtyard aren't in the same buildings as the venues. So, you have to use the toilets early, then walk to the venue and queue outside for maybe half an hour before the show starts.

I have been in the audience of some excellent shows, just wishing they would hurry up and end as I was desperate for a wee.

Watch Robbie Williams, irritating attention seeking untalented, saw him at a festival years ago because some friends wanted to see his set, god awful

And he really should be ashamed of himself for those Felix cat food ads!

Tofana · 27/06/2025 10:05

I really hate jigsaws. They completely frazzle my brain, my grandma would do massive ones, completely fiddly little pieces and spend days doing it, complete it and return it to the box and take it the charity shop.
I’d rather use a Glastonbury toilet (and i’ve first hand experience of the grossness!)

My family loved puzzles, mum, brother, aunts, gran I would just look at them and feel the most utter boredom...I did a few with my young daughter, a 68 piece one was a sacrifice I was willing to make as a mother...😅

IcedPurple · 27/06/2025 10:34

Night clubs.

I'm old now but even when I was young I just didn't see the appeal. Awful loud music, sweaty bodies packed together, flashing lights. No thanks.

milkhoarder · 27/06/2025 10:34

Going anywhere when there is a special event on. E.g. "Do you want to go to Munich for Oktoberfest?" No, I'd much rather go to Munich at any other time of the year. "Do you want to come to the Summer Fayre at the country park this weekend?" No, I'd rather go literally any other weekend.

It doesn't matter how 'good' the event would be, the additional crowds and noise just makes it an instant no from me.

And host a big fancy wedding where I had to wear a big fancy dress and entertain hundreds of people doing boring shit. The fact that people spend £20-30k+ on a single day and are happy with that choice absolutely blows my mind, and I'm not normally someone who doesn't understand that everyone has different preferences - I'm normally very reasonable and understanding... but huge expensive weddings just make absolutely no sense to me, when I wouldn't even want one if it was free.

Skiing. I don’t want to have to wrap up to break all of my bones.

Again, missing the laugh emoji.

HelenCurlyBrown · 27/06/2025 10:38

Agree with many things already said.

Glastonbury, Disney, Hen parties, Formula One, Football, clubbing.

You couldn’t pay me to go to Dubai or any sort of naff AI hotel where the food is all buffets.

crackofdoom · 27/06/2025 09:38

Oy, leave Tragos out of it! 😆

(If you can't derive some kind of amusement from the Liskeard Trago Mills with its "interesting" sculptures and political statements, Disney- Princess-on-ketamine architecture, massive flock of cocks inhabiting the car park and crazy aviary themed cafe with its bird murals and fake flowers, then you have a cold dead soul. Even if you have just spent an hour looking for the exit).

Now, is this a real place? Or have you been having a Cheese Dream? 🤨

No. Felix should be ashamed. 😳

Agree with a lot of these, I will never again go camping, music festivals, spa day, hen party, nightclubs but have the people saying cruise ever been on one? The cruise I went on was the first time I ever felt like I actually got a holiday along with the rest of my family. It was absolute bliss and if I had the money I'd never holiday any other way.

I would need paying a life changing amount of money to consider learning to drive or going to a hairdresser again.

Some people think Spain is just the costas. Asturias is beautiful with amazing food.

I swore off Spain after a package holiday to Lloret del Mar at the age of 11. It was grim.

Last year I went back for the first time in 40 years- to the Pyrenees and Bilbao. It was wonderful.

Which prompts me into saying that I'd never go on a package holiday, especially AI. Too dull and bland for me.
