Popular things you wouldn't even do for free... (Glastonbury for me)

Me? Glastonbury. There isn't enough vodka in Russia to get me there. Too many people, too much noise, hay fever, having to piss and shit (both of which I need to do a lot) in shared portaloos probably with no bog roll, not having a proper shower or proper anything wash wise, feeling sticky and unclean, not having a real bed to sleep in. The list goes on and on and on. If someone offered me £50,000 to go from the very beginning to the very end I'd probably consider it but even then I doubt I'd bite. If I did I'd probably die of misery by day two anyway. Utter, utter misery.

What's yours?

I wouldn't do...
-any sort of piss-up/boozy weekend/boozy night. My body can't tolerate much more than say 1 unit of alcohol, and I can't bear being around drunk people.
-going to see the male stripper dancers (Chippendales?). No thank you!
-nightclubs.
-big festivals like Leeds and Glastonbury.
-cosmetic surgery, hair, nail and eyelash extensions, fillers.
-energy drinks
-training to become a teacher (I have the deepest respect for them but my God, I couldn't do it).

I would (and have) gone diving, skiing, sailing, windsurfing, climbing and skydiving. I'd go to (certain parts of the) ME (I'm from there but live in UK now). I've got a bike license and I also love cycling. Also love camping and small quiet festivals.

Nottheendoftheworld1 · 27/06/2025 09:53

Agree with most of the things that have been mentioned but I have a special one. A colleague was gushing about the amazing concert she'd been to. I love music and was interested so I asked...Andre Rieu.
I'd never heard of him but he is apparently very popular. Just no.

NetballHoop · 27/06/2025 09:54

I don't want to go to Chelsea.
Oh no it does not move me even though I've seen the movie.

fgswhywouldIdothat · 27/06/2025 09:56

Pretty much all of the above (apart from Spain)
Also:
Sand
Can tolerate walking on it in cold weather with robust footwear, but it still gives me the ick

Oh, god yes. Horse racing too.

Yes - one my my Hell No is Ladies Day at Ascot .
Dress up in a me me me look at me camera dress and heels (bare feet and it'll rain) and a thing on my head pretending to be a hat
Glass of fizzy wine/prosecco (I don't drink)
Horse racing- unspeakably cruel
Throwing money away on a bet "it's all for fun"

lifeonmars100 · 27/06/2025 10:00

LOVE this thread, I used to think it was just me and that I was a right misery guts with no sense of fun and adventure. I was quite bold and up for most things in my younger years but they no longer interest me and there are others that I know I would loathe

RunningBlueFox · 27/06/2025 10:01

Go to Dubai
Watch Coldplay, Taylor Swift or Oasis
Go on a girls holiday (love my girlfriends but do not want to holiday with them and vice versa)
Own a dog
Go skydiving

Yes to a great many of these - including Glastonbury, Disney World, big sports events especially.

I realise this will sound crazy to most people, but a big thing for me would be 'dream' beach holidays in hot countries. I love the beach in the UK, and I have no objection in principle to cultural holidays abroad, amazing landmarks etc.; but things like two weeks on a Jamaican or Thai beach would be so boring to me, and not enjoyable at all.

I often think that, if I were on a gameshow, I probably wouldn't actually want the 'big' prize, if it's going to be a dream holiday. If I'd been on Bullseye back in the 80s, I would have been perfectly happy with a teasmade, novelty telephone, washing machine or whatever; but the grand finale would be completely lost on me as I probably wouldn't gamble - even if my teammate and I were both Luke Littler and pretty much guaranteed to win - as I would just hate a 'paradise' style exotic holiday, if they'd run out of speedboats!

I totally agree about the beach, its nice to spend a couple of hours on the beach but i would hate to be there all day, let alone all week, doing nothing, getting sand everywhere and burnt to a crisp. My husband is the same, we like to go out and do things, see things that we wouldn't at home, isn't that what holidays are for?

faffadoodledo · 27/06/2025 10:02

Dubai
cosmetic surgery or tweakments (call me arrogant but I think I’m ok!).
Right now - America (which pains me, because I am a former fan).
A tribute act of any kind. I know it’s a way of musicians making a living - but not for me!
A rugby match. Borne of horrible experiences with rugby players at university.

RubyFlax · 27/06/2025 10:04

I genuinely wouldn’t do any of these even if I was being paid to, never mind for free…

Glastonbury (or any other similar festival)
Sky dive / bungee jump
Lip filler, Botox etc.
Smoke / vape
Get a tattoo
Go on a cruise
Holiday in Florida / Disney
In fact, holiday in any other all-inclusive huge resort type holiday full of kids clubs, multiple pools, noise & norovirus.

Gosh what a miserable cow I am.

THEP0PE · 27/06/2025 10:04

Disney
Dubai
Las Vegas

Go to India

As an IBS sufferer a trip to India would be my idea of hell, my guts would never recover.

Tofana · 27/06/2025 10:05

I really hate jigsaws. They completely frazzle my brain, my grandma would do massive ones, completely fiddly little pieces and spend days doing it, complete it and return it to the box and take it the charity shop.
I’d rather use a Glastonbury toilet (and i’ve first hand experience of the grossness!)

theDudesmummy · 27/06/2025 10:07

I agree with many already mentioned. My top ones would be Disney, Dubai and cruise.

Ones I have done and would pay plenty never to do again: Australian outback, scuba diving, grand prix, Thailand. (I would like to go to Vegas again some day though, it was so surreal!)

MrsEmmelineLucas · 27/06/2025 10:09

Glastonbury
Disneyland
Dubai
Tenerife
Camping
Spa days
Getting false nails
Cocktails
Botox

Cattenberg · 27/06/2025 10:09

I'm from Somerset and I always feel that I ought to go to Glastonbury once in my life, but I don't want to! I saw yesterday's news footage of people waiting in massive, zig-zagging queues to enter a field (like airport check-in queues but infinitely longer). People just seemed happy to be there, but that would put me in a foul mood before it even started. Also, I get bored watching the highlights on TV.

I think I could have a good time in Dubai, if I could overlook the human rights abuses. But I wouldn't go. By the way, my colleague went there with her husband and they ended up in their hotel lift with a Russian couple. My colleague was wearing a Dior necklace. The Russian woman switched from Russian to English to say pointedly to her husband, "This place has really gone downhill, there are people here wearing last season's Dior". My colleague found this hilarious.

Literature festivals.
Political conferences.
Happy clappy evangelical churches.

Oh yes. I forgot St Helen's Bishopsgate. It's not happy clappy - it's what I imagine going to a Wee Free church would be like, only bigger.

Poor you, you'd have a miserable time 😣

vincettenoir · 27/06/2025 10:09

An escape room.

PistachioTiramisu · 27/06/2025 10:10

I wish I could understand all the hate for Dubai! I am a perfectly ordinary middle-aged (well, old i suppose!) person and I love it! To begin with, it's clean, safe, the people are kind and helpful, the hotels are fab, the restaurants are great and the sun shines! You don't have to spend all your time in the glitzy, sparkly part - the old town and the souks are fascinating, as is taking an abra across the creek.

Nevergonnamoveagain · 27/06/2025 10:11

For those saying Dubai, is it simply because of the human rights etc...
Because I agree with that but it is a actually a gorgeous place, super super clean, gorgeous beaches, super safe, the malls are not crowded but not empty so have a nice atmosphere, lots of activities to do and things to see beyond the beaches.
I mean I agree that women have little rights ans they treat workers terribly so on that front I wouldn't want to spend my money there but the actual place is beautiful.

MrsEmmelineLucas · 27/06/2025 10:12

Oh my god, @Cattenberg - capitalism at it's finest!

PistachioTiramisu · 27/06/2025 10:14

I forgot to list my contribution -

  • Cruising
  • Anywhere with screaming, screechy kids
  • Any music festival
  • Camping
  • Destination weddings which cost the earth
  • Office parties!
  • Disneyland
Rainbowpeppercorn · 27/06/2025 10:15

Look forward to a UK summer heatwave - I hate the oppressive heat here and am not looking forward to this weekend at all.

Roll on Autumn, that's a season I would happily pay good money to stay in forever.

Swim with dolphins; smiley fuckers!

Dolphins are really awful creatures. They gang rape, they murder for fun etc... all while smiling!
