Popular things you wouldn't even do for free... (Glastonbury for me)

BringYourOwnBullshit · 27/06/2025 07:37

Me? Glastonbury. There isn't enough vodka in Russia to get me there. Too many people, too much noise, hay fever, having to piss and shit (both of which I need to do a lot) in shared portaloos probably with no bog roll, not having a proper shower or proper anything wash wise, feeling sticky and unclean, not having a real bed to sleep in. The list goes on and on and on. If someone offered me £50,000 to go from the very beginning to the very end I'd probably consider it but even then I doubt I'd bite. If I did I'd probably die of misery by day two anyway. Utter, utter misery.

What's yours?

Glastonbury
Go to Dubai
Go to the USA at the moment
Go to see horse racing

A cruise.

I see some of the appeal. But all of those nice things can be replicated in other ways and there are far more things that do not appeal one bit. And then there is the small but definite risk of being trapped in an avoidable disaster - storms and seasickness, mass norovirus, remember the quarantined COVID ship...? <shudder>

Nope, you'd have to pay me a LOT to do it.

Edited

Shall I add to your list Costa Concordia sinking? 😂

SingleAHF · 30/06/2025 00:10

Read a novel.
Get drunk.
Go camping.

Did you watch Poop Cruise on Netflix? Completely put me off.

Add to the list...Dubai, Benidorm, Oasis tour. I wouldn't actually mind seeing Oasis but the crowds and piss throwing out me right off.

I've heard of it, but I'm gonna add "watching poop cruise" to my list of popular things I wouldn't do even for free...!

Yeah DH keeps trying to make me watch it!

Good thing that you don't live where I do in Hong Kong, wouldn't find a table most of the time.

PumpkinSparkleFairy · 30/06/2025 10:33

Owning a Tesla 🥴

Agree about Disney, Dubai, cruises. Won’t be going to the US under Trump.

Glastonbury - all my friends who went took a lot of drugs, so I’m too goody-goody to have enjoyed it 😂

Baby showers, the tackiest thing ever - so awkward when SIL had one 😂

As a garden lover ❤️, Chelsea Flower Show, having been one year, hideously crowded, over priced and the gardens piddly and small (if you can get near enough to see them). Much better watching on TV from the comfort of your armchair with glass of pimms in hand that didn't cost you a small fortune at show prices. Saying that, if I were to be offered VIP access, with Monty Don as my personal guide, I would be there like a rat up a drainpipe. 😊

I heard that about Chelsea! It always looks so nice on the press days and you imagine just walking through and hanging out and there being the same number of people you'd get in a normal park. Wishful thinking at it's finest.
Same with columbia road market. Soo busy and hectic the plants totally get lost in the melee!

Caving/Pot holing

I watched that film The Descent thinking all the time "Nooooo don't go there"

I know The Descent just a film , but there is also the tragic true story of "Nutty Putty Cave" which took the life of John Edward Jones in the most unthinkable way .

My sister used to go potholing , I could never fathom the appeal .

Go camping

Spidey66 · 30/06/2025 21:23

Glastonbury has never appealed to me either, mainly because it involves my other dislike….camping. I have been camping, once as a child. Never again.

Australia. Everything there is designed to kill you - the spiders, the bull ants, the snakes, the sharks, the box jellyfish, the blue-ringed octopus, the heat, the ice storms.
Also the casual racism and rudeness and the lack of culture (excepting the Indigenous Peoples).
I'd say 'No Thanks' to an all-expenses paid trip to Oz.
For stunning scenery and great beaches I'll stick to shark-free North Devon or Cornwall.

Don't be utterly ridiculous. Australia is the best place in the world and if I could I would move there. Most of the people there are much friendlier then the people here, so much more laid back as well. It's a much better way of life out there. I have family who have lived there for more than 60 years who say they could never live in the UK again and I don't blame them.
You're at no risk of sharks, octopus or jellyfish if you stay out of the sea, and you rarely come across snakes or spiders. The heat is much more tolerable than our horrible stifling muggy summers as well. It's the most beautiful place in the world

Topsy44 · 08/07/2025 19:01

To go and watch Formula 1.

I just don’t understand the appeal of watching cars race around a track - I get a headache if I listen to more than 5 minutes of it if it’s on the tv!!!

Like many others - anything Disney, big cruise (I’d like to go on a small one with interesting historical visits and lectures though). Dubai, Manchester, York at a weekend, Lidl & Aldi, Primark, a nail place, bingo, anywhere where the table staff feel the need to describe my food in loving tones or offer any kind of advice, Hollywood bowling.

I’ve changed my mind about one though - Wetherspoon’s; first visit a few weeks ago (no choice!) and thought it was bloody brilliant! Really buzzy, cheap, no music, much nicer than the bleak, soulless, expensive place a few doors away.

Sandyoldelbows · 08/07/2025 19:18

Wetherspoons also had a paramedic on standby, kind of reassuring.

SingleAHF · 08/07/2025 19:18

Any dangerous sport or fun thing.

… but I was answering the OP’s question.
It’s a popular thing I wouldn’t do, even if it was paid for.
Glad you like it, but it’s not for me.

Fair enough but it's the only place I've been honestly happy. The only thing I don't like is the long long flight but I would go back in a heartbeat. It's so stunning and I'd be off there like a shot if I had the chance again

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/07/2025 21:55

Bit of a Blast From the Past but I wouldn't go to an Ann Summers Party now .
Been in the past in my 20s and they were a laugh but not my thing now

PassingStranger · 08/07/2025 22:21

Go to see Oasis.
Ed Sheeran,
Adele
Lewis Capaldi.
Do long transfer from the airport holidays. Do a holiday where you didn't know where you were staying.
If that even is a thing anymore.

Once went on a square deal last minute thing in the 90s. Holiday.
Never again, didn't know where you were going.
2 hour coach transfer through the night after a flight.

Go on a long coach journey without a toilet.
