Popular things you wouldn't even do for free... (Glastonbury for me)

BringYourOwnBullshit · 27/06/2025 07:37

Me? Glastonbury. There isn't enough vodka in Russia to get me there. Too many people, too much noise, hay fever, having to piss and shit (both of which I need to do a lot) in shared portaloos probably with no bog roll, not having a proper shower or proper anything wash wise, feeling sticky and unclean, not having a real bed to sleep in. The list goes on and on and on. If someone offered me £50,000 to go from the very beginning to the very end I'd probably consider it but even then I doubt I'd bite. If I did I'd probably die of misery by day two anyway. Utter, utter misery.

What's yours?

Disneyland. Loud, jangly, overcrowded, overwhelming consumerist hell. And people pay half a year’s salary to go.

I came on to say this. I would rather eat my own eyes. Never liked Disney, not even the old stuff.

I swore off Spain after a package holiday to Lloret del Mar at the age of 11. It was grim.

Last year I went back for the first time in 40 years- to the Pyrenees and Bilbao. It was wonderful.

Which prompts me into saying that I'd never go on a package holiday, especially AI. Too dull and bland for me.

I used to think like that. I'd never been on a package holiday until I was in my late 30s as my parents were very snobby about things like that, and I carried it on. Most of our holidays are independently arranged, off the beaten track, self catering. But one year after a particularly stressful few months I told DH I just wanted something easy that year and we booked a package to Lanzarote with very low expectations. All I required was warmth and something for the kids to do. But I was really surprised how nice the hotel was and my diet that week was mainly humble pie.
I mean it's not like you're a prisoner in the hotel or anything! We did spend a couple of days in the hotel using the pool and the other facilities but other than that we hired a car, went out and did all the same kind of things we would have done on one of our normal holidays. Nothing boring or bland about it at all. I'm sure you could spend all day every day in the hotel if you wanted to but you don't have to.
To me, a package just means booking travel, transfers and accomodation in one go from one company and sometimes I do that for the ease and it because can be cheaper. Other times I spend months meticulously researching uncommon destinations and finding independent accomodation. I like both, and neither is boring.
Sure, there are some resorts I wouldn't want to go to and definitely some accommodation that I wouldn't choose, but "package holiday" covers a really wide range of holidays and they certainly don't need to be boring or bland. The holiday company isn't in charge of what you do when you get there so if you're not a boring person there's no reason why you should be bored.

I agree with most of these.

I’m in two minds about Glastonbury. I’ve been three times, but the only way I could do it now would be to glamp in a place with running water and clean loos.

Disneyland / cruises / AI resorts… no thanks.

i have been to Dubai because I have family there. I wouldn’t go otherwise. All I’ll say is don’t knock it… I was pleasantly surprised.

Lip filler and obvious cosmetic work

There are a lot of supposedly attractive men
that I wouldn’t shag for money ahem Robbie Williams, Leo DiCaprio and David Beckham (tbf they’d probably say the same about me, see my point above 🤣🤣)

PulchritudinousLycanthrope · 27/06/2025 12:20

I find IKEA irritating. I hate the thought of going on a cruise and there are loads of telly programs I avoid cos I can't bear the presenters. As soon as anything on the telly or radio is narrated in a sing song voice as if it is aimed at six year olds (which is pretty much 80%) I switch off.

Redheadedstepchild · 27/06/2025 12:21

AirB&B. Or Airbnb. Or whatever it is.

Too much hassle from either side, either letting out your own place or staying in one.

I went to Lloret del mar age 14 with the school! Been to loads of other Spanish places since but revisited LDM a couple of years ago (50 years later) it was lovely.

ScruffMuffin · 27/06/2025 12:30

So many of these! Even if you paid me, I wouldn't go to:
Disney
Glasto
Any type of cruise
Skiing
Clubbing

I'm not all that keen on camping, but it's how we manage to afford a family holiday for a week each year (in the UK). I've been to a small, quieter music festival a few times too.

I particularly don't understand the appeal of skiing. Expensive, freezing cold, likely to spend most of the time landing on my arse; possibility of broken bones. I mean, a couple of hours might be fun, but people go for a whole week! Just don't get it.

I also don't like shopping, pubs, fashion or makeup. My hen night was 'a girly night in'. That tells you all you need to know about my sociability!

Edited

😂😂I've never worked out what's attractive about either of those men, but like you, I suppose they'd think the same of me!

KoalaBlueOssie · 27/06/2025 12:40

Massage
Pedicure
Escape room
Bunjgee
play any sport
Drnk coffee

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 27/06/2025 12:45

Watching a horror film and theme parks/fairs in general (inc Disney and the like) because why in the name of all things holy would you pay to scare the living daylights out of yourself?!

Worcester...it is a beautiful city, I spent a lot of time there in my younger days but following dss death last year (age 16) I can't bring myself to go anywhere near it.

Nothankyov · 27/06/2025 12:47

@Notreallyme27 - I think that for people that go it’s not half their yearly salaries 🤭. I love Disney - only place I feel like a kid again.
@BringYourOwnBullshit - I’m with you no festivals, no camping. Nothing without electricity and the comforts of modern living.
@Ihatelittlefriendsusan - love scary movies and getting scared. Such a thrill! 🤣

Spain.

I just don’t get it. Give me France and Italy any day.

Have you been to any non turistic places in Spain?
Spain has only failed in not stopping badly behaved tourist from doing what they wouldn't do in their country.

However it is a very beautiful country worth visiting. Leave the hotel and turistic sites.

OnyourbarksGSG · 27/06/2025 12:50

Silverstone formula 1. I detest car racing, rich over privileged idiots competing to win Wanker of the year and waste a load of champagne. Even the sound of it in the tv makes me irrationally angry. And lucky for me I have a teenage daughter who is obsessed and wants a career in motor sport. So next week I have to take her to bloody silverstone as she got 4 day tickets for Christmas and can’t go alone and honestly I could cry. My DH had a minor car accident two days ago and honestly (and I know this is awful) but for a second I was quite upset that there wasn’t more damage/injuries as I could have used that as an excuse not to go and claimed on the travel insurance. But instead I’ve got to go and honestly I’d rather have my toe nails pulled out one by one . What makes it even worse is I paid for the damn tickets as my dad was going to take her but he’s had to have a knee surgery so can’t go. 3 thousand fucking pounds for 2 tickets and a shitty wigwam in a field. But I’ll go and support her dreams and do my best to fake smile while I’m paying £20 for a shit burger and a few fries.

twilightermummy · 27/06/2025 12:51

A lot of the above. No skiing for me and I certainly wouldn't be paying towards Jeremy Clarkson.

I wouldn't wear anything by White Fox either. Some of their clothes look alright but everybody here is wearing them!

I wouldn't have surgery in Turkey.

I can't even watch others skydive!

MrsAvocet · 27/06/2025 12:59

I realised I'd kind of missed the point of the thread when I said earlier I'd never want to go on cruise. What I really meant was that I'd never want to go on any cruise that I might conceivably be able to afford! But if someone else was paying for it I'm sure there are cruises I would enjoy, like one of those private luxury boats that take about a dozen people with some penguin experts to Antarctica. Though I'd be concerned about the ecological impact so maybe not. But if there was some planet damage free way of doing that it is something I would absolutely love. Unfortunately I stand zero chance of ever being able to afford a trip like that but I woukd go if I could.
So maybe I need to cross cruises off my "not if you paid me" list. I stand by my "no floating tower blocks in the Caribbean/Mediterranean" stance though. If anyone ever sees me on one of those please notify the authorities as I have been kidnapped.

ladyamy · 27/06/2025 11:59

I don’t imagine you’d get very many hen dos at Disneyland…

Not sure about that. Someone I worked with got married in Disney. I can't think of anything worse.

Thispupsgottofly · 27/06/2025 13:12

I'm surprised spas seem to be so unpopular. What is so bad about them?

They're not exactly popular things but you'd never get me on a submarine or launched into space!
Wouldn't go to Dubai or similar states either.

Have been to Glastonbury a few times in my younger years and loved it but have no real desire to go back and certainly not with a small child in tow!

caringcarer · 27/06/2025 13:15

Go on a rollercoaster.
Sky dive
Go on a zip wire.
Go on a ski lift
I don't like flying but take an anxiety tablet before flight to relax me and I only force myself for my family.

❤️ the second one is very understandable.

justtootiredtoday · 27/06/2025 13:31

Haven’t read many replies so so far heartily agree with:

Glastonbury
disneyland
robbue williams
skiing
cruises
live in London
hot tub with stranger….possibly hot tub with anybody. All the germs and chemicals Envy

GreenTurtles3 · 27/06/2025 13:33

Changingplace · 27/06/2025 07:42

Omg yes! I have absolutely no desire to go to Disney

Yes! I went under pressure from family. Hates every second.

RainbowBagels · 27/06/2025 13:38

Glasto for me too. I'm sick of hearing about it. I know bands blah blah blah live music, great, but festivals in general are a big no no, and Glastonbury not even if you paid me to go!

The whole of Spain? It's not just beaches you know? It's one of the most varied countries in Europe. Beaches, forests, mountains, deserts, history, culture, many different languages and cuisines. In Andalucía alone you have the beach, a ski resort and a Moorish palace all within an hour and a half of each other.

Agree 100%
Last place you talk about is Granada.

What people here hate is the product of overturism and the display of behaviour from UK and other tourists.

Spain is much more than that.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/06/2025 13:45

I’ve thought of another : Bottomless Brunch from the people I’ve known to go it seems making a holy show of yourself whilst blind drunk falling round in the street is an amazing day out!
