Feeling a bit 🤢
I bought a gorgeous rosemary sourdough loaf and had the last two slices warmed in the oven, then topped with a bit of dijon, rosemary ham and Swiss cheese. Turned the broiler on and perfection, right? Poured a large glass of apple juice and settled in. Was thoroughly enjoying my late-night snack watching Netflix without interruption while the kids are asleep. Then the salt hit me. 🤮
I never eat deli meat and I over-indulged.
Had more juice as I became so thirsty.
Now, I'm sitting up waiting for my stomach to settle before going to bed. 😭

Feeling much better today tummy-wise. 😅
It has been years since I regularly ate processed meats, since a deli that made their own sadly closed and I've never found another like it, not to mention all the health concerns, so I guess my taste buds have really adjusted. 🤷‍♀️

Had a really good interview today and we drank prosecco to celebrate. Probably a mistake but then we haven't had a win in a while.

EllaDisenchanted · 26/11/2025 07:19

Been mad mad busy with work. Not yet seeing the light at the end of the tunnel but it’s close.
I started reading pride and prejudice with DS16, and it’s such a joy to share a favourite book with him and explain the humour in it all.
It’s been a very warm November, but it broke two nights ago with the most spectacular thunderstorm, which went on for hours. The thunder was so loud it woke me from a deep sleep.
@Mumtobabyhavoc were you a chef in another life? I’m blown away by your food! I’m very repetitive in my cooking, apart from seasonal items for festivals.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/11/2025 08:09

Ella, how lovely to be reading a classic together. Three of my faves are: Wuthering Heights, Anna Karenina and Crime and Punishment ... when I had time to read.

I had an aunt who would always tell me I should open a restaurant and I'd always reply, That would take the fun away. 🤷‍♀️
I do enjoy cooking, although tonight was s bit of a fail... over-cooked baby kale for the gorgeous shi-shi imported from Naples pasta I bought. 😭 🤷‍♀️

No completed tasks to report, but does thinking about them earn any points? 😁
Did take kids out shopping and finally found new snow boots and gloves for baby (and a new toque). Also bought two new mugs I think will be perfect for peppermint hot chocolate.
(They were so cute I needed a reason) 🙄

Hope everyone is well. 🩷
Night, night. ☺️

That’s fantastic Ella, I was in my 30s before I actually appreciated Jane Austen’s writing, when I studied it at college. How lovely that you can share this with your DS I went back to college after my divorce and when my children were small. The course I was doing was a new one and the only other 2 students dropped out, so I had 1 to 1 tuition, with a wonderful tutor. I also studied The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene and I was able to explain the Catholic thought process of the protagonist to her. She said that she actually understood it a lot more afterwards, which was very rewarding. Those four years at college and then Uni were amongst the happiest years of my life and gave me a new career at the end of the course.

Havoc, glad you are feeling better and looking forward to hearing about your delicious dishes. We seem to keep to the same meals each week, just varying the days. I need to try some more food variations.

I’m sticking with the knitting show Myrtle just hoping it gets better, but I doubt it!

Gosh thank you. My children have done me proud as well. We never had a lot of money, but we always had books from the library and we haunted 2nd hand bookshops. I now have one mental health professional and a university professor!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/11/2025 02:36

Uman, you have so much to be proud of. 🩷

And speaking of pride... 😂 I redeemed myself with dinner tonight. 😅
(pasta, prawns, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, sun-dried tomato oil, goat feta)

Havoc that looks delicious. Just my sort of meal. I love seafood and pasta. We had meatballs with pasta tonight. 😋 ❤

sproutsandparsnips · 27/11/2025 22:22

Oh yum @Mumtobabyhavoc!
I did Pride and Prejudice at school @Umanresourcesand hated it but have since read all of Jane Austen’s novels! Did Jane Eyre for A Level and ended up enjoying it.
i have a day off tomorrow and I think I will bake my first batch of mince pies, and prepare my pudding for steaming.

Umanresources · 27/11/2025 22:55

@sproutsandparsnips I was exactly the same with Pride and Prejudice at school. Hated it until I was in my 30s at college. The same with Jane Eyre, I had a beautiful cloth bound copy of Jane Eyre on the thinnest paper. It was bought for my 10th birthday, and I only ever read it up to where she left school. Now it’s one of my favourite books. I found the exact edition last year and read it again. My tutor made me fall in love with the book and wonderful headstrong feminist Jane. Charlotte Brontë was way ahead of her time!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/11/2025 00:11

Ordered a Christmas craft for dc which arrived earlier today. It is complete, but I need batteries for it. Am going to pop out to get them after a quick trip to the furniture store. Pics later. 😁

This is what the kids put together today. It was super fun and very cute. Until one caught fire.
Amazon is refunding and picking them up.
I'll take a look for another brand. 🤞

😮😮😮

That's awful.

I hope everyone is OK.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/11/2025 18:32

Yes, all ok Myrtle. 😅 But I will have to find another, although it looks like there are at least a dozen sold under different companies, but are identical. So, not entirely confident with the lights that come with.

Feeling quite hungry today. My breakfast is not leaving me feeling like I've eaten. 🤔

Where are all our thread friends? 🧐

Ooh Havoc what an awful shock for you all. It was a good job it hasn't been left alone. I like the felt one that don't light up.

My DD is taking a week's leave to help me sort out stuff in the house. I'm a hoarder and she is going help me de-clutter. I don't need 14 roasting tins or 12 baking sheets, but I can't physically reach them now to cull them. I also need the glasses and drinks cabinet sorting. I think we have about 5 bottles of tequila, which we don't drink, amongst the many bottles. I think my DD brings back a bottle of two after she and her friends go away for a few days. I used to take ask the glasses out and wash, dry and polish them in time for Christmas every year. I'm going to do the washing off then this year, but someone else can put them away.

I've written all my Christmas cards and have included bookmarks in family and close friends ones. The posted ones have been mailed and I am meeting some friends for lunch next Wednesday, so their card and bookmarks are all ready in my bag.

It's 6 am here and I am just about to go back to bed for the second part of my sleep. This is a regular occurrence, after waking to go to the loo, I stay up and read for an hour until I can feel myself ready to sleep again.

HildaTablet · 29/11/2025 09:51

OMG Havoc! That’s really bad.

DH and I are in a local biggish town that has a famous street market, and it’s very Christmassy at this time of year. Unfortunately it’s raining hard and the eye-test we actually came in for (mine) is cancelled and I didn’t see the text before we set out. So we’re having a coffee before having a mooch around. I’ve got some presents still to buy so might be able to do that at least.

MyrtleLion · 29/11/2025 14:33

We went to the restaurant by the river where we had a couple of beers then came home by 7pm.

We then stayed in to watch TV. We realised we'd already watched three of four episodes of what was obviously an unmemorable drama. Watched the final 2 hour episode with a bottle of wine, then DH opened a second bottle. So we ended up staying up past midnight to watch a BBC concert from Simple Minds.

Quiet day today.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/11/2025 21:55

Myrtle, sounds like a nice evening. How is the ankle now?
Hilda, I hope you're not one of the 50 million under severe weather advisory. ❄️
Uman, it always feels better after a clear out.

Amazon picked up the felt tree. I think I had requested a return on both, so need to check.
Had kids out downtown last night for the Christmas tree lighting, a good walk around, quick look at an art exhibit and Christmas decos in the lobby of an office tower, look at the Louis Vuitton windows at Hotel Vancouver and finally a late burger and fries at Red Robin (meh).

Would really like to take dc to the Harry Potter Experience ($$$😳), as there are some deals to be had, so am going to drive by the venue to see how they've got the parking structured before I buy. It'll be dark and our weather will likely be rain/snow so I want to suss things out in advance as the event is in Stanley Park. Apparently the main lot adjacent to the entrance is reserved for a much higher VIP PKG charge now. 🙄

We're recovering from Thanksgiving on Thursday and an unexpected win by the local American football team on Friday.

Thanksgiving went really well, and the weather turned very cold the day before, so I was able to use my back porch as an adjunct fridge. We'll be able to do that for the whole of next week and probably further too, as winter has definitely arrived. We are half way through a big snow storm. It's expected to snow until 6am tomorrow.

After the football game on Friday (we're now getting used to watching the entire game instead of writing the team off at about the half way point) I dropped DD off to Sephora and Target and she also had a mosey around the Old Navy sale. I went to buy bread and milk and to put gas in my car, and noticed my front tyres looked a little underinflated. I tried the air machine at the gas station, swiped my card, pressed 'air', but no air came out of the hose so I stumped into the station and asked if I could get a refund, which they gave me after I added my name and the date to a list of about fifteen other people who had been refunded.

When I picked DD up we headed off together to a reliable gas station air machine, and she supplied moral support as I inflated the tyres. One was at 19 psi, so definitely well in need of inflation.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/11/2025 09:07

Yikes about the snow, Math. ❄️ I saw the news that about 50 million people are under weather advisories. Glad to hear Thanksgiving went well. Did you do all the cooking? Did your chicks return to the nest?
Whew re the tires! Do I recall correctly urging you to attend to your car's tires last year? 🤔

Drove by the Harry Potter venue and checked out parking. It's going to be easy. Bought tickets for us to go for baby's birthday. Scored a very good deal, too! 🤗 Have ordered all birthday decos. ✅ Just need a few more prezzies for dc. And to re-order a felt tree. And to return the other one. Decided to do that rather than take a chance.

Took dc to W Van for their tree festival. Have been going for ages. It's gorgeous.

The ankle is a slow heal. I've been very unwell but when you're in it, you kind of don't realise. I feel tired and I'm obviously run down - two cold sores! My friend who last saw me before the original operation said I wasn't myself when she saw me about 10 days ago.

The ankle is definitely improving but it's sore and slow walking on it. Hopefully this will improve by mid-January. I'll finish the antibiotics on the 13 January and then I should start to feel a lot better.

mathanxiety · 01/12/2025 04:50

What a long, long slog it's been for you, Myrtle. Here's hoping you continue to improve and the antibiotics are working. Can you take massive doses of vitamins or do anything else to keep your strength up? I hope it's a comfort to you that your friends here are thinking of you.

Yes, Havoc, those tyres seem to require more frequent inflation than the rear ones do, and I think they were probably almost flat last year too. The trees look marvelous and very exciting for the DCs. I can't believe you're preparing for DC's birthday! Time flies.

We had a team effort the night before Thanksgiving, with DD contributing a pumpkin pie and DS doing a supermarket run and making the brine, me wrangling the turkey into the bucket of brine, making cranberry sauce, making stuffing, and making a pecan pie, after I got home from work. I did all the cooking on the day itself - potatoes parboiled and roasted, carrots roasted in the air fryer, parsnips roasted with the turkey, sweet potatoes mashed and seasoned, beans steamed, gravy made when the turkey was out and resting. My future DiL made delicious sprouts with a lemony dressing. I remembered to cool the beer and white wine on the porch. DS brought a lot of leftovers back with him and I hope he'll enjoy them all week. He has to be back in town next weekend for a course and exam, so we'll see him briefly.

We got about 7-8 inches of snow and it took a while to clear the car this morning. DD and I went out in the afternoon to get some Chriatmas shopping done and to get her some snowboots after I realised I had a discount coupon for a discount chain and she realised she needed snowboots. The roads were all cleared and salted.
