Yes, Math, croissant bread pudding. Eggs, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, choc chips sprinkled on top.. Heaven. I often make it for Christmas and Easter mornings, too, but for Christmas I use egg nog for the heavy cream.
We used to have to do yearly emissions tests, too. I think it stopped being done about 10 years ago.
Lots happens in Vancouver and suburbs. I think most places are the same and it just depends what you feel like doing. I want the dc to really feel part of the city so I do try and expose them to various cultural events. I like it , too, and have always tried to do different things to keep life interesting. ☺️
We went to the Christmas Market for a bit this evening, saw the tree lighting, listened to carols (strange for mid-Nov), drank apple cider, had pics with Santa and a wander around and then went to a diner (Denny's) for dinner (breakfast food). Kids loved it as it was their first time. They had a waffle, scrambled egg and sausages (the Jr. Slam). I had steak and eggs sunny side up which they were very curious about and then when I put HP sauce on my plate they had to try it, too. It was a new experience and I loved listening to them chat about this new discovery, HP Sauce. 😂.
We then walked down to another Lumiere exhibit, stayed about an hour then stopped by one more down by the beach which was really fun before heading home soaking wet and chilled as it was raining and 7c.

pics: Science World was purple and yellow tonight; blue lights on the trees leading down to the seawall at Coal Harbour by the Christmas market site; Christmas tree at the market; light exhibit at Davie/Denman, West End at English Bay; Hotel Georgia looking Christmassy with wreaths in the windows and lights at the entrance.

Had a bit of a sleep in here until 8:45am. 🤗
Gave dc left-over pancakes with banana for breakfast and we've watched How It's Made and learned how rice cookers, mechanical origami and gardening shears are made (21 days for the latter, I'm ready to be tested!).😂
We're now on to pvr'd The Adventures if Paddington. I promised hot chocolate for breakfast because it was too late when we got home last night wet and cold and I'm waiting for them to remember and prompt me....😁

This may be a bit too exciting for the Dull and Unexciting thread, but my Christmas cactus has sprouted flower buds since I moved it closer to the heating vent. It last flowered about two years ago. Meanwhile, the Thanksgiving cactus is just sitting there twiddling its thumbs.

HildaTablet · 18/11/2025 08:27

Ooh math - what colour is it? Mine burst into flower about 3 weeks ago and is mostly done now. It’s clearly unaware that it’s a Christmas cactus…

mathanxiety · 19/11/2025 03:23

It's pink, Hilda, and I can't wait to see the blooms. I have a feeling that our very sunny autumn had something to do with the buds.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/11/2025 06:54

Managed to put up some Christmas lights on the deck after dinner. It's getting late, almost 11pm, Havoc is asleep and I've just heard the washing machine finish. Going to hang the clothes up and maybe watch an episode of Parenthood on Netflix.

We are in for a cold spell this week. I’m so happy though as my stairlift will be fitted on Friday. I’ve actually managed to get it down to 20 minutes climbing the stairs at night. I use one crutch and lean on the other hand, swivel slightly on the two small landings and then use a half step for the top step and the upstairs landing, both those steps are a fraction higher than the others and it’s slightly more difficult to climb those!

Some of my friends bought me a plant for my birthday over a year ago, I just found out it’s a bromeliad. I thought it was an amaryllis. I have found out that the baby plants/offshoots are actually called pups, who knew?

Havoc my OH is enamoured with How It’s Made. I must say I enjoyed the one with decorative sombreros and the hand made paper, which did lead me to buying some paper. I’ve not succumbed to the sombreros yet, but there is time!

Last night I watched an episode of Midsomer Murders. I must have seen them all at least four times. I was watching it, knowing I knew who the murderer was; it got to the end and it wasn’t that person after all. I was quite surprised .

i hope everyone is well and keeping busy, as I’ve not seen many postings on this page.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/11/2025 19:40

Uman, so glad to know of the progress on your end. 🤗
I think How It's Made has been around for years. Utterly dull, fascinating and educational all at once. 😂 And, I realized, great for little ones to learn about the things around us! 💡

It's sunny and 8c here today. I was awake until well after 2am, so moving slowly this morning.

Took the kids to the big library downtown yesterday afternoon, for sushi (Cali rolls) and a wander to look at some Christmas decos and the gorgeous lobby of the Scotia Bank tower (giant screens showing the city, greenery in the walls, big red glass balloons hanging from the ceiling). We drive by that often and baby always points to the balloons, so I made a point to take them to see it.

giant spawning salmon installation in Scotia Bank lobby

I parked on Richards Street at W Georgia. Pics of view west with sunsetting and east behind us. Just slice of life pics. Also saw lanterns hung in alley between buildings. Would have ventured closer to look for some signage describing, but parking was nearing expiry.

I hope your stairlift installation will go well, Uman. I doubt you'll miss taking twenty minutes to climb the stairs.

Our weather is definitely turning chillier, and it's time to start planning Thanksgiving grocery shopping. I bought a fresh turkey today for a really good price per lb in Aldi. They had eight left when I arrived at the store after work. The turkey is in my fridge, and I'll make room for it in the freezer tomorrow.

HildaTablet · 20/11/2025 08:37

Bit of a pointless post but I absolutely love seeing how things are made - I’ve always been weirdly fascinated by footage of factories manufacturing things, especially foodstuffs for some reason. I’m also fascinated by who makes the machines that manufacture the things in the first place….a rabbit-hole you can’t stop going down once you start thinking about it 🤔

Uman the arrival of that stairlift will be a cause for major celebration! IIRC the one my parents had was surprisingly quick to fit and the process didn’t cause much disruption at all.

Havoc yet more pictures of amazing decorations - I’m constantly astounded by it. Our local high street was putting up its annual string of white Christmas lights on all the buildings yesterday….very pretty (it’s an old street, lots of c. 17th/18thc buildings) but the word you'd use is 'minimal'. Nothing like the level of decoration you have.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/11/2025 21:16

Hilda, sometimes subtle is perfect. 🩷

But, I do seek out Christmas decos. Makes me feel all warm amd fuzzy. Will be getting the tree tomorrow! 🤗🤗🤗
ps always wondered who makes the machines that make the things. 🤓

Did a lot of driving in London on Wednesday and Thursday.

Exhausted now but it was a good couple of days.

Umanresources · 21/11/2025 17:45

I’ve now got my stairlift. Woo hoo! Been up and down a couple of times. I felt very giddy with excitement after the first time and had to calm myself down. It is making such a difference already, delivering me almost door to door. Fantastic. I can go to bed when I want to now and not have to wait until I ready myself first, which used to take me a couple of hours to steel myself and take extra painkillers!

mathanxiety · 22/11/2025 03:47

Uman I'm so happy for you!

DD and I were in the sitting room earlier watching the PBS documentary on the American Revolution (which was a great deal more bloody than I had thought), when we heard loud, crashing noises coming from the chimney - a bit like bricks falling, too loud for a bird or squirrel. So the landlord is sending a roofer to see what happened.

From the chimney, you say? Could it be a practice run? 🎅

Just received a snowflake pastry cutter from Etsy. I always do my mince pies with a plain top, but I thought I'd try a change this year.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/11/2025 13:00

Havoc is sleeping beside me, sits up and says, Mummy, I don't want to lose my fingers.😢

What kind of dream prompted that?

Ohhh boy !!
It just gets worse !! 😮😔🙏.

I am having a bad place right now.
Took mam to the hospital appointment yesterday.

Operation on her eye booked in for 2 weeks time.
!

We were not expecting that !

Head is exploding.
Everyone is looking at me for answers...

The most heartbreaking thing ..lovely annoying mam
is going to go through this painful eye procedure ...but still end up with the same eye sight she has got now ...

As it only stops it getting worse or going blind in that eye .

I am absolutely heartbroken for her .

I am trying to be positive..

..

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/11/2025 02:03

Oh, no @bizzey I hope surgery goes well. My mum has AMD and there's nothing that can be done, sadly.

We bought our Christmas tree this afternoon! Just having dinner, lobster ravioli in cream with sautéed baby kale, then popping out to do a quick grocery shop and will decorate tree after. I put our tree on the deck, so lights and a star are the only decos I do. I have a new tree stand I'll be trying. 🤞

Our tree goes up on the first Saturday in December and comes down the first Saturday in January.

I knitted Christmas stockings for DH, DSD and me.

We showed her on Friday because we're instigating it as a new tradition and wanted her to know that her usual small gifts to us (he gets a multipack each of Twirl and Wispa, and I get two of Lindt's dark sea salt chocolate) would go in our stockings and we would also get small gifts and she can supplement us with small gifts if she wants. (She's 32 and has SEN and lives with us full time.)

... and she immediately wanted to take it upstairs and keep it in her room. She really loves it. I'm blown away by just how much. I said it would be packed away with the Christmas stuff in January until next Christmas and she said no, she wants to keep it all year.

I think she really likes that I knitted her something. I might knit her a hat that matches as a Christmas gift...

Hers is smaller because I measured it against ours and forgot that the toe decreases would pull it smaller. I think it needs another four rows.

Beautiful stockings, Myrtle, and clearly your DSD isn't worried about the shorter size.

We'd have to go looking for our tree most mornings if we put it out on our deck, havoc as most of our winter wind comes from the west. The idea of birds sheltering in it is really appealing though, and it would certainly make it easier to dispose of it in January.

Bizzey, I hope your mum comes through her operation well. It's probably best to try to preserve what can be preserved of her sight. Losing it altogether would be horrible.

As usual, I haven't started thinking about Christmas yet because Thanksgiving lies just ahead. This year, I'll be giving DS a grocery list on Wednesday, and I'm hoping he'll be able to put new windshield wipers on my car that day too. The old ones are falling to pieces.

My plants are doing well so far in the sunny windows.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/11/2025 20:45

Math, the humming birds have me worried most years as they hover around it. ☺️

@mathanxiety thank you. I’m still getting used to the stairlift. The first night I got stuck in the chair because I couldn’t work out how to unfasten the seat belt. All of a sudden it flew apart but I had no idea what I’d filmed. The next morning I had the same problem, so had to shout for help. My daughter was quite exasperated with me because I couldn’t work out what she was telling me. Finally managed it but I was laughing so much.

@MyrtleLion i love those stockings. I bet your DSD will love a knitted hat. I might look for a simple hat pattern for my grandsons. You’ve inspired me to get knitting now. I am watching the knitting programme now, as well.

@Mumtobabyhavoc your ravioli looks gorgeous. OH made a lovely beef casserole tonight. It was just the thing to have on a cold night like tonight.

I’ve been carried away with my bookmark making. I’ve put one in every Christmas present that I’ve made and everyone is getting one in their Christmas card as well. The photo shows only about half of the ones I’ve made. I’ll have to find a way of giving them away somehow. I’d have been giving them out as prizes when I was teaching. I’ll have to give a handful to my grandsons to take back to Portugal after Christmas.
