And as for Glastonbury, little Tennyson has decided he is a Neil Young fan. He sat quietly next to me and gazed in fascination, then got up and did a little dance to "Rocking in the Free World". He was enraptured by the whole performance. I've never seen anything hold his attention for so long. 😁

So do I.

Me too.

itsgettingweird · 29/06/2025 09:09

I’ll add that I also think you should have a vote.

SerendipityJane · 29/06/2025 10:08

Rather than Farages scheme, I'd support something which offered the right to vote (not necessarily full citizenship) after someone has paid a certain amount of tax to the UK exchequer. You could link that to automatic citizenship after <x> years. It would be a nice balance to cunts like Tice who are doing their utmost to move their money out of the UK exchequer (by whatever means necessary).

It's quite galling to think that all the wealth created by immigrants is arithmetically being exported by all our non-dom chums.

Notonthestairs · 29/06/2025 10:22

I'm not sure lifelong Tory voters can pretend they've voted Tory everytime for 40 odd years because of Corbyn.
Unless your vote is unduly influenced by backbenchers or independents.

I’m glad my post to @pointythings was deleted. It certainly wasn’t in the spirit of the site. So apologies. I’ve got a lot going on atm so will refrain from posting for a while.

I wonder what little Tennyson's reaction would have been to Kneecap or the Ipswich lot who chanted about death to the IDF.

I think we need a new photo of Tennyson.

Here he is!

I shall let you know if he has any further Glastonbury reactions!

DuncinToffee · 29/06/2025 10:54

Kneecap weren't really that shocking, just for BBC standards really.
DD only looked for a stream to see what all the fuss was about.

Channel 4 will now be showing the Gaza documentary that the BBC dopped.

Blue bubbles to you and yours ... 🙏

Notonthestairs · 29/06/2025 10:59

I've heard of Kneecap because of the court case. But who are the Ipswich lot?

Can you tell that I am totally out of touch with music? I have Fleetwood Mac and Kate Bush pretty much on a loop with a bit of Wham/Spandau/Alison Moyet/Eurythmics thrown in for when I really want to relive my teens. I was briefly very cool with my kids around the time of Stranger Things which I also havent watched.

SerendipityJane · 29/06/2025 11:07

There really is a lot of the Streisand effect going on here.

I am old enough to remember when "God Save The Queen" was considered unfit for British ears. Pretty much guaranteed that everyone I knew heard it via their older siblings.

Banning things almost always achieves the opposite of the stated intention.

Also there is a fascinating list of "banned by the BBC" that includes (Sir) Paul McCartney ("Give Ireland back to the Irish") and video for "Invisible Sun" by the police. When that was banned I was able to use the library and read a fucktonne more about Ireland than I ever would have at that age. And it pretty much showed me that there was a war going on, whatever it was called.

Thank you, @derxa. That actually means a lot. I hope things improve for you.

Efacsen · 29/06/2025 11:14

@Notonthestairs seems to be Bob Vylan another rap duo- according to wikipedia

DuncinToffee · 29/06/2025 11:18

I looked up that banned by the BBC list 😂

Agree that Kneecap and Bob Vylan have only come to my attention because of the pearl clutching. BBC iPlayer is not showing the Bob Vylan highlights.

We had a cat when I was growing up (sorry no digital photo to upload) who could purr for Wales or England, was charming to all humans apart from refusing a collar and being funny about tablets, and sadly killed so many birds that my entire orthonological knowledge comes via her.

Never batted an eyelid for anything on The Old Grey Whistle Test or Top of the Pops, but loved the Magic Roundabout theme tune.

Yes I agree re Kneecap, would add that it's all very Glasto to do the shock protests.

So good that Channel 4 is showing the documentary.

Right the roofing quote has been sorted and I'm now about to tackle the measurements for the bathroom refurbishment. Taking out the bath tub and can't wait - hate cleaning it.

The only thing on the TV which has ever attracted Tolkien's attention was Keir Starmer's speeches on the night of the election. He watched his MP acceptance speech intently, went back to sleep, and as soon as he heard his PM speech begin, he woke up and sat in front of the TV to listen.

After a year of Labour, is life in Britain really becoming worse?

About 59 per cent of us believe the country is going in the wrong direction — but figures on employment, the NHS and knife crime suggest otherwise

It’s the cost of living, people’s incomes are not improving. And visible businesses like pubs are shutting down.

But I wonder whether all the divisiveness is having an effect? The media narrative could really get you down.
