What's going on in Oxford, why have locals voted for this

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 15:46

From October,or whenever it starts
My DH is going to have to pay £5 a day ,that's £100 a month
Just to get to work
He can't go by train or bus because he starts and finishes times when they don't run .
Apparently from what I understand this was voted in at the local council elections.or the person who wanted to put this scheme in place was voted in ,.
This is going to effect the price of houses ,it's going to put people off moving to Oxford.
With this in mind I can't understand how this was agreed

We didn’t get a congestion charge in Cambridge. Traffic is an almighty shitshow and the buses are utterly shit because they are stuck in traffic. Take the congestion charge and thank your lucky stars…

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:16

Sounds quite reasonable?

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:18

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 16:25

They don't run at 4 .30 am to get him to work for 5 am or run at 2.30 am to get him home

Bless. Complain to the county council.

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:19

Or he could just get another job?

And just £5 a day? Cheap as chips.

Unless I’ve missed something OP is ignoring the post I did which explained that those who work in the city will be able to get permits. It’s no 20 in the list. There is website that covers all of this rather than posting on mumsnet.

But then maybe that doesn’t fit her narrative.

The younger pupils are 11. Not GCSE age.

Cherwell is a very over-subscribed school, so pupils starting there in year 7 will be living within the school catchment, which means cycling is fine for them.

Sixth-formers often come from outside catchment, but they're older and can cycle further distances.

If you want to know more about Cherwell's commitment to green transport, see their website:

If you stop being bitchy for 2 minutes and read all her posts you'll see the OP said he is actually considering that.
My point I made to you was if everyone who works in Oxford but doesn't actually live there decided to do that then the city would probably grind to a halt due to lack of workers.

Yep, no one seems to give a shit when bus or train fares go up, but heaven forfend a car driver has to shoulder the true cost of motoring.

It's going to start happening in all cities. Forcing people to work locally. There's talk of it (congestion charges) happening in my city too.

It is forcing people to work from home. Well, those that can. And will accelerate converting high streets into rows of barber shops.

Needmorelego · 23/06/2025 18:23

@Grumpycat6 definitely have a look at the permit thing.
That might solve the problem 🙂

It doesn't filthier narrative.

Oxford City Council has been Labour controlled for decades.

I'm nor sure where the 'voting' thing came in.

Also, it's the county council who is responsible for highways.

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 17:39

If they run 24 hour buses and trains ,it's not a problem,he can get to work and home ..but otherwise no he can't without a car

Needs to get a different job?

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:26

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 16:22

He's outside of those hours

Can't he walk? Oxford is a very small city.

His job isn't on the permit list of jobs

Because I can't see how people will be able to afford this

Generally speaking, people who live in Oxford and can afford to live in Oxford, don’t drive. Those who do drive, will also be able to afford the congestion charge.

those living outside Oxford - agree - totally snookered.

Is his job at BMW new? Surely, he should have looked at how to get there before accepting?

FFS....the OP said he is considering that.
Hopefully his job isn't something that means your life as an Oxford City resident isn't affected by him quitting his job.
You'll soon be moaning if some company/service you regularly use is suddenly short staffed.

DeafLeppard · 23/06/2025 18:29

He’ll still be able to drive, but will just need to pay more….

£25 quid a week is not cheap. If petrol went up £25 a week there would be real problem’s.

Public transport takes twice as long, is expensive ,less reliable than driving and offers none if the flexibility. Well near me anyway.

Leave his job for someone actually from Oxford

(I actually don't know)

They don't live in Oxford and aren't from Oxford.
