What's going on in Oxford, why have locals voted for this

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 15:46

From October,or whenever it starts
My DH is going to have to pay £5 a day ,that's £100 a month
Just to get to work
He can't go by train or bus because he starts and finishes times when they don't run .
Apparently from what I understand this was voted in at the local council elections.or the person who wanted to put this scheme in place was voted in ,.
This is going to effect the price of houses ,it's going to put people off moving to Oxford.
With this in mind I can't understand how this was agreed

An hour
But he takes the train whenever he can
It's just the trains don't run before he sometimes needs to start working and the last train has finished before he needs to leave

Each way? That's a long commute.

The drip feeding from the OP is exhausting, no pun intended.

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 16:22

He's outside of those hours

Go and live somewhere else?

Oxford is really tiny.

He must work in the Westgate.

It's the county Council you need for roads.

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:00

Do you live in Oxford?

If you have an issue, you'd need to contact the county council.

Are you suggesting that only those who live in Oxford should be able to work in Oxford?
That would make life interesting if all non residents quit their jobs.
The place would probably grind to a halt.

Most people pay travel costs, one way or the other.

Yes they do, I thought the same.

Op, your husband is most likely not the only employee affected. Maybe his employers will compensate them, give.a pay rise to cover it or a travel allowance. They won't want to lose staff.

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 17:39

If they run 24 hour buses and trains ,it's not a problem,he can get to work and home ..but otherwise no he can't without a car

He can't catch a bus?

Needmorelego · 23/06/2025 18:04

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:03

He can't catch a bus?

What bus?
That's the point. Oxford buses don't run 24 hours.

Also. County council run the highways.

Nothing to do with the cirty council.

What's that got to do with what I said?

Brightmoonlight · 23/06/2025 18:06

Even though Morris Motors was one of the early producers of motor cars the Councillors that we get have not yet realised that the humanity requires independent comfortable safe personal transport. That is what we demand. We buy cars for utilitarian, pleasure and hobby uses. Wagging your finger and telling us off has not worked. It will never work.

I live in Kidlington. Our bus terminates near Broad Street/ Cornmarket Junction.
For my Father the 15 minute walk to the Library is his limit. The main shops John Lewis and Next are a further 10 mins.
Another fault of the buses is that none from the north side including the northern villages run to the main station. How stupid is that?

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:06

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 17:42

That's something then actually..better than nothing.

Also. It's the county Council who deal with highways.

So nothing to do with city council elections.

You don't live in the city either.

That's a matter for the county council who operate highways.

But, to be honest, I probably would prefer less incomers.

ARichWomansWorld · 23/06/2025 18:10

I cycle but F me it’s not safe when it’s icy or dark plus if it’s warm you get sweaty and whilst some workplaces have ok washing facilities many don’t.

Imagine washing in the sink and a colleague comes in ‘Sorry Brenda I’m just washing my pits and bits because I have cycled in and I’m sweaty’

Contact Oxfordshire County Council.

Wow. In Oxford? I live there. It's tiny.

Also, county council manage the highways.

Oxford is not tiny. Especially if you happen to be coming from outside the city - which many pupils do.

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:12

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:10

Contact Oxfordshire County Council.

Not Oxford City Council.

The BMW plant is still operating.

County Council again.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/06/2025 18:12

GasPanic · 23/06/2025 17:48

You are right.

I was looking at the wrong map, the low emissions zone.

I used to live not far away from Marston Ferry Road. Glad I moved out of Oxford now.

Yeah, I wish I could move out! Oxford hasn't been a pleasant place to live for a while now!

Be great for the people on benefits not working,a nice clean car free city to spend their days in .
Meanwhile back the real world

What?! What has this got to do with anything aside from bashing people on benefits??

A lot of cities have this - there are too many vehicles on the roads unfortunately

Needmorelego · 23/06/2025 18:13

I never said anything about who is responsible for maintaining roads.
I was responding to how you seemed to suggest that non Oxford residents should go and find jobs elsewhere rather than driving into the city.

I apologise
I was getting frustrated

Isn't Oxford the one with the 15 minute zones as well

Just pointing out that it's the county council who are responsible for education and highways.

Cherwell is a secondary school - you’re not seriously saying people need to drive to do a school run for teenagers? That’s an age where they obviously can and should be walking with friends, cycling or getting the bus. No wonder so many kids are so anxious and shy if they’re still being driven to school by their parents when they’re about to start their GCSEs 🙄

The younger pupils are 11. Not GCSE age.

Trying to be - hasn't quite been enforced yet, but give them time.

So?
I never said anything about that 🤷

NoThankYouSis · 23/06/2025 18:16

What a dreadful idea. Until public transport becomes a reliable and cost effective option, people will still rely on their cars. Instead of putting some thought / effort into improving the infrastructure, they’re trying to force people off the road through other means. I don’t live in Oxford but have the same issue as your husband in that I work shifts, either early or late and can’t get a train / bus home on some days.
