What's going on in Oxford, why have locals voted for this

From October,or whenever it starts
My DH is going to have to pay £5 a day ,that's £100 a month
Just to get to work
He can't go by train or bus because he starts and finishes times when they don't run .
Apparently from what I understand this was voted in at the local council elections.or the person who wanted to put this scheme in place was voted in ,.
This is going to effect the price of houses ,it's going to put people off moving to Oxford.
With this in mind I can't understand how this was agreed

Restrictions everywhere, it’s madness OP, I agree. You cannot move without being stung.

His job isn't on the permit list of jobs

For the commuter in a permit zone permit there doesn’t seem to be a list of jobs. Instead the requirement is a workplace in the central permit area and parking at that workplace. Does that not apply? (I have added a screenshot of the relevant description but it’s under review)

They don't live in Oxford and aren't from Oxford.

But they're welcome to contact the county council. They are the highways Agency.

He's already paying £100 in petrol per month
This will double it
He can't take the train or bus as he starts working at 5 am some days and finishes at 2 am other days

Yes I get that. Which is why I said find and join a campaign for better bus and train services. That is ultimately the answer. We all need to get out of our cars way more than we do currently (well actually as I dont drive...... I dont!) Buses, trains, cycling, walking - thats the answer for the future. Not continuing with cars. Our planet needs us to make considerable changes to the way we live our lives.

I totally get how impossible transport costs going from £100 a week to £200 isnt sustainable but neither is continuing with car usage the way it is.

You wont be the only one who is thinking this way - find other like minded souls and get the local public transport system improved. Also Park n ride schemes and see if his employer has a Cycle to work scheme.

It says permits would be available for certain groups including community health and care workers blue badge holders and mobile traders .
He doesn't fit any of that .and I can't see any information that says what any other certain groups might include.
Although if he is covered by a permit that would be really helpful
He already goes by train whenever his shift hours allow ,so he's doing his bit when he can

I wouldn't buy a house where this was in place

Well that's your choice isn't it. It's not everyone else's.

My photo is from the detailed permit guidance on the website. I suggest you contact them for clarification. There are lots of groups who can get permits, all listed separately, so it is a bit confusing but having read two of the documents the commuter permit stands alone and doesn’t sit with a particular role (unlike, for example, if you need to drive in and out of the city for a caring role.

Have you read all of the documents on the consultation website?

Ah that's wonderful thank you
Why could I not find that .and I did look .
I was looking on the website, Oxford temporary congestion charge for cars .
Is that not what you were looking on

So drive to a park and ride then cycle to work .
Fantastic
I expect he will look for another job

Yes that’s unreasonable and not everyone is able to cycle especially at that time for safety reasons or for physical reasons.

This is the problem with the UK I feel. They try and do these measures to discourage driving but they don’t have proper alternatives in place compared to some other European countries. And I say this as a non-driver (who is learning to drive) who has used public transport as much as possible my whole adult life.

I doubt very, very much that you could afford to buy a house in OXFORD.

my house just down the road would prolly reach a million in Oxford.

Why can't he just get a job closer to home?

Yes, but I read the documents that were provided on that page. You need to scroll to the bottom and there are two documents on permits as well as the FAQs. You will probably also need to find a map of the central permit zone, but if I were you I would ask OCC for clarification and I’m sure lots of others will do the same.

The city council website is pretty good.

It remains the county council who do highways.

Lovemycat2023 · 23/06/2025 18:42

It’s the next paragraph down on the page which covers your husbands situation (not the one about carers etc)

You can ask the city council as much as you like. It's the county council you need for highways.

Is this the city council's website? Oxfordshire county council is responsible for highways and education in the city of Oxford.

Cherwell is a very over-subscribed school, so pupils starting there in year 7 will be living within the school catchment, which means cycling is fine for them.

Sixth-formers often come from outside catchment, but they're older and can cycle further distances.

If you want to know more about Cherwell's commitment to green transport, see their website:

Also. County council.

See my reply above - website address is “Oxfordshire” rather than Oxford. This is the consultation website with all of the formal documents.

You know there's probably loads of people who live in Banbury who were perfectly happy living there and working at the Horton Hospital - but then so many departments and services got switched to the JR so now they work in Oxford and have to commute 🤔

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:47

GasPanic · 23/06/2025 17:48

You are right.

I was looking at the wrong map, the low emissions zone.

I used to live not far away from Marston Ferry Road. Glad I moved out of Oxford now.

Because the county council is bad at managing the highways?

cyvguhb · 23/06/2025 18:52

Almostwelsh · 23/06/2025 16:51

I wouldn't cycle in the pitch dark in the middle of the night from a park and ride to work. I would feel unsafe.

I don't know why but suggesting cycling is always the thing on any kind of transport thread with no recognition of the fact that it's a totally impractical solution for the majority

Suppose it was the OP who worked shifts do posters really think a lone woman cycling around by herself in the small hours is any kind of workable answer?

I can't imagine anyone I know ever suggesting that

cowleycyclist · 23/06/2025 18:53

I'm starting to think that maybe Bunnycute23 is writing satire, as some of their posts are a bit puzzling.

I'm all for green transport, but Oxford is not THAT tiny. We don't know where he works; it could be miles from Peartree!

And also,
House prices in Oxford are really low.
This is news to me and (I suspect) many other Oxford residents as well.

Finally, has anyone thought of contacting the county council? Just a thought I had. 😂

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 18:53

Needmorelego · 23/06/2025 18:46

It's a huge issue. Tiny little city. The JR is staffed by people that can't afford to live in the city. It's either the second or third most expensive city to live in outside of London.

The city council tries super hard to house local people.

The county council manages highways and schools.

It really is OP's issue that her partner accepted a job he can't get to at the BMW plant.

He could have left that job for someone from Oxford?

Wow! Congratulations on your lovely home and I don't give two hoots that it would 'prolly' be a million pounds in Oxford.
I won't apologise for my much cheaper home. It suits me perfectly and keeps me warm and dry. I work hard for it and I have no need to go around telling the world what it's worth.
