What's going on in Oxford, why have locals voted for this

From October,or whenever it starts
My DH is going to have to pay £5 a day ,that's £100 a month
Just to get to work
He can't go by train or bus because he starts and finishes times when they don't run .
Apparently from what I understand this was voted in at the local council elections.or the person who wanted to put this scheme in place was voted in ,.
This is going to effect the price of houses ,it's going to put people off moving to Oxford.
With this in mind I can't understand how this was agreed

It is about the same price as the Park and Rides (which operate from 6am to midnight) if he parks and takes the bus. It's obviously cheaper if he walks or cycles from the park and ride. If he works for one of the colleges, they should have a salary sacrifice scheme for bus tickets and for bike purchase.

He's outside of those hours

Come in a different way? There's no filter on the Abingdon Road or either of the northern roads in.

Recoba · 23/06/2025 16:23

Your husband could use one of the 5 park and ride sites around the city and either use the buses or store a bike there.

Needmorelego · 23/06/2025 16:24

Is it at the Mini factory (wild guess - but I am going by his shift pattern)?
Do they provide a staff bus?
(or the JR?)

They don't run at 4 .30 am to get him to work for 5 am or run at 2.30 am to get him home

It hasn't been agreed. It won't affect vans, lorries or disabled badge owners who will be allowed through for free. Residents of Oxford City will have 100 days free per year.

Oxford temporary congestion charge for cars | Let's Talk Oxfordshire

If your husband feels really strongly about it, he should fill in the consultation but it is a short term thing before the roads where the congestion charging cameras are placed are closed to cars more or less completely. Unless your husband fancies paying £85 per day to drive to work, he will have to find other options from October 2026.

What?! £85 a day!! Whatttttt

Kelim · 23/06/2025 16:26

I can see what you're saying, OP. It must be frustrating to keep explaining that either going TO work or coming BACK, he's in the hours, but he can't drive there and get a bus home, or a bus there and drive home. It doesn't work.

There's no point getting a bus to work and then be stuck there at 2am with no way of getting home again. Or driving in at 5am and getting dinged on the way back with the charges.

Which would be where the bicycle comes in. It's a 15-minute cycle from most of the Park&Rides to the city centre.

If lots of his colleagues are going to be affected by this they need to all get together and talk to the managers.
A company can't run without staff so surely management will want to come up with a solution.

Anonbindrama · 23/06/2025 16:28

On other thoughts. If vans are exempt then you might be better off buying a cheap van.

Arcadia · 23/06/2025 16:28

he might have to get a motorbike or a van? They are exempt!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 23/06/2025 16:28

Bath has had this for a couple of years except it's £6
Public transport is shit, hence the shops are closing
Debenhams a few years ago, and the legendary Jolly's in Milsom Street recently
I lived there from birth until 9 years ago and DS1 still does
i now live in a beautiful market town, Bradford on Avon.
Big range of every shop necessary up the road in Trowbridge, much maligned but it's better served than Bath.

Fantastic
I expect he will look for another job

Actually.... as others have said - sell the car and get a van !
(easier said than done though)

They actually don't give a shit
They are a nightmare company to work for
They just employ their friends who can't actually do the job , people go of sick constantly for months at a time
Which is why I've not named where he works
He will be glad to leave
This will be a he push he needs to get a different job

Yep. Bus gates (at the same places as the congestion charging cameras and for the same hours) so no cars allowed through without permits and a penalty of £85 if they do so.

Needmorelego · 23/06/2025 16:32

@Grumpycat6 I hope he manages to get a different job 🙂

So this congestion charge is actually a good thing hopefully!

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/06/2025 16:34

I live in Oxford, have done for all of my 50 plus years on this earth and I can assure that that locals have not bloody voted for this - many of us are furious about it!
Most of the councillors who are trying to bring this in don't even live in the city - they are all smug bastards who think they have the utter right to dictate to residents of the city how we go about our business.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/06/2025 16:36

Also, to be completely fair, the congestion charge will be temporary - well, at the moment they're saying temporary. Whether it stays that way is another thing altogether.

PrincessofWells · 23/06/2025 16:37

So drive to the park and ride, get the bike off the rack/out of the boot and cycle the rest of the way.

Alternative is to buy an electric bike and cycle in or p & r then bike.

Carshare.

There are lots of options. It's really good for the people who live in Oxford. I wish they would do something similar in Abingdon.

It's going to start happening in all cities. Forcing people to work locally. There's talk of it (congestion charges) happening in my city too.

I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this
It would be a disaster financially if this was brought in where we ,Iive
I don't know how they expect locals to manage the disruption and cost
