What's going on in Oxford, why have locals voted for this

From October,or whenever it starts
My DH is going to have to pay £5 a day ,that's £100 a month
Just to get to work
He can't go by train or bus because he starts and finishes times when they don't run .
Apparently from what I understand this was voted in at the local council elections.or the person who wanted to put this scheme in place was voted in ,.
This is going to effect the price of houses ,it's going to put people off moving to Oxford.
With this in mind I can't understand how this was agreed

If they run 24 hour buses and trains ,it's not a problem,he can get to work and home ..but otherwise no he can't without a car

So I'm correct in my understanding that the £5 a day charge is temporary untill some gates shut somewhere in 2026
Then it's a no go to drive to Oxford and and £85 charge a day if you do .

What about getting to hospital, like with sprained ankle ,or having a baby ..I ended up going in a few times before my baby was burn .
Is that exempt

You get 100 free day passes per year if you live in the wider Oxford permit area, so yes, that would cover a lot of emergencies.

That's something then actually..better than nothing.

It will catch him on every shift either going to work or leaving work

No one is stopping you getting s job.

Because people cant afford it. And unfortunately it doesn’t change the fact that some people will still need to travel by car so it unfairly penalises them. These schemes are grossly unfair.

But people are affording it in all the other cities. House prices have not plummeted in those cities since the congestion charge was implemented there

party4you · 23/06/2025 17:47

Start complaining! Greater manchesters version is “under review” due to backlash

The city council aren't responsible for the highways.

Call Oxfordshire on Monday?

Holloway isn't the centre of Oxford, neither is Marston Ferry Road - it seems they're putting measures in the to stop parents driving their kids to school - why else would they put those measures in place between 7-9am and 3-6pm? Yes, those kids could ride their bikes, but many of those using the Marston Ferry Road are going to schools which are probably quite a distance from their homes.

You are right.

I was looking at the wrong map, the low emissions zone.

I used to live not far away from Marston Ferry Road. Glad I moved out of Oxford now.

Oxfordshire county Council is responsible for highways.

This really isn't the case. Oxford has a huge amount of off road cycleways, ive been using them. Im 62, my partner 76 and the majority of people can use a bike but choose not to.

Oh give over. You are not cycling home after a 9 hour shift in the driving rain or snow at two o'clock in the bloody morning. Most ridiculous thing I've heard on MN this week.

If they are stopping people driving they need to put buses or trains on.

Why shouldn't the company pay for it's workers to get home safely? Why should the tax payer pay for more buses?

It depends on your route. You’re fine if you go round the bypass and in from London road or marston road. Not if you drive through town.

Quite a few are only if you drive certain cars though, not all cars

Grumpycat6 · 23/06/2025 17:55

Why are they not letting electric cars drive through with no charge
I thought the push for electric was to stop emissions,is that not part of why they are doing this

It's a really tiny city.

Perhaps your husband could walk?

Also, the city council aren't responsible for highways.

party4you · 23/06/2025 17:56

@Grumpycat6 how far & often is his commute? £100 per month on petrol suggests it’s not very far.

Bunnycute23 · 23/06/2025 17:57

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/06/2025 17:10

Some pupils live miles away from the schools, especially the Cherwell school on the Marston Ferry Road. In bad weather, cycling or walking are not going to be desirable and the bus service is not the best.

Wow. In Oxford? I live there. It's tiny.

Also, county council manage the highways.

It hasn't been agreed. It won't affect vans, lorries or disabled badge owners who will be allowed through for free. Residents of Oxford City will have 100 days free per year.

Oxford temporary congestion charge for cars | Let's Talk Oxfordshire

If your husband feels really strongly about it, he should fill in the consultation but it is a short term thing before the roads where the congestion charging cameras are placed are closed to cars more or less completely. Unless your husband fancies paying £85 per day to drive to work, he will have to find other options from October 2026.

If this is true and it doesn't affect vans you could look into the cost of buying a little old van. It could pay for itself over a few years and you can sell it again if your husband gets a job outside the zone.

party4you · 23/06/2025 17:56

An hour
But he takes the train whenever he can
It's just the trains don't run before he sometimes needs to start working and the last train has finished before he needs to leave

Do you live in Oxford?

If you have an issue, you'd need to contact the county council.

Untill everyone does the same and they stop that .
I appreciate your thinking of a solution for us .
