How are people affording this lifestyle?

Just curious if anyone can shed liJust curious if anyone can shed light on this. I know a couple a few years older than me (late 20s/early 30s) living in Newton-le-Willows. He works as an admin/warehouse inventory clerk at some small frozen and she did not go to uni, she has no LinkedIn, never mentions any kind of work or side hustle.

And yet they’ve been on a couple of holidays in the last year, seem to eat out occasionally, and post pics of family days out etc. It’s not luxury by any means, but still — two kids and one modest income??

Are they just really good with money? Family help? Universal Credit top-ups?

Genuinely trying to understand how people make it work on paper when everything is so expensive these days.

So do you know she doesn’t have a job or are you just presuming because she doesn’t mention it? Who are this couple to you, how close are you to them? Just because she doesn’t have LinkedIn doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a job…also are you really dedicating time to searching for her on there? Why are you so bothered?

Blondiney · 23/06/2025 20:18

No LinkedIn??? 😲😂

VivaDixie · 23/06/2025 20:29

Urgh, you sound like a couple of my DH's work colleagues. Confused He works 3 days/24 hours a week, and I do 2 days - 16 hours a week. (WFH.)

Several times, these 2 nosey women at his workplace, have been poking around trying find out how we can afford to live in a nice village in a lovely old cottage, and afford a 5 year old car, and a holiday abroad every year (plus 2-3 mini breaks in the UK on top.) And how we managed to pay a third towards our DD's quite fancy wedding (cost about £15K.) And lots of day trips to the beach, and various UK cities during the year (we like to get out, and do things!)

DH just smiles and winks and says 'ah ha wouldn't YOU like to know?' Wink

Me personally, I say 'what the fucking hell has it got to do with them?!' I don't know WHY they are so curious and nosey, but we tell them naff-all. They're all like 'ooh we've been trying to figure out how you manage to do it with you only doing 3 days a week and your wife only doing 2. How do you do it? Shock' Like what the hell? Mind your beeswax!

@AmusedTaupePlayer MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!

Now I want to know how you do it 😂

Where is st helens?

It is the local authority borough that Newton-le-Willows falls under

AmusedTaupePlayer · 23/06/2025 21:03

Where is st helens?

How can you not know where St Helens is? But you know these people who live in Newton-le-Willows?

How do you know these people? And where did you think Newton-le-Willows was?

WHATtom · 23/06/2025 21:11

This is an incredibly fucking weird thread.

TiredMummma · 23/06/2025 21:13

So she might be self-employed - lots of options and some in school hour or evening work. Creatives for example don’t necessarily need LinkedIn. I had friends who went on holiday and it was grandparents pensions that they gifted them, so might be that. But also package holidays now don’t need to cost a lot. You can get a last minute package for £800 for a family of 4 if you don’t care where to.

Wolmando · 23/06/2025 21:15

OP doesn't seem to know where the place is that these people she is posting about live.

Ain’t it. Maybe these friends also catch the peak hours bus to Knowsley 3 times a week? I mean how on earth do people in Knowsley even afford zebras?

Wowwee1234 · 23/06/2025 21:16

I found our car being followed, phone tapped, benefits scanning through hundreds of pages of bank statements once because someone like you, OP, clearly decided we needed investigating. Humiliating and unnecessary.

Our crime? Being students with children who were good, very good with money. Vegetarian, home cooks, terry nappies (1990s/2000s), home made gifts, gifted clothes, second hand appliances, no expensive anythings. We did go on holiday and sometimes ate out, but only because of the above.

Managed to use a student loan lump sum to buy an expensive looking car, but again a bargain ebay find.

Not everything is suspicious.

Caramelcap · 23/06/2025 21:18

I wonder if people make posts like this about me!

I have plenty of holidays (search every day for deals, book really far in advance, let the deal dictate the destination), I also have a few days out with the kids (early bird discounts, season passes to places given as gifts from family, always take a picnic) but I’m also really good at eating cheaply, hardly buy clothes or treats for myself, do my own nails etc etc.

Probably best to worry about your own circumstances.

Are you for real?? You know where N-l-W is but not St Helens?

Have you ever heard of Warrington!?

Vrech23 · 23/06/2025 21:19

Bed routine for nearly 3 year old?!

We currently put DS to sleep and then creep out or stay there.
What are you doing especially as it's taking too long sometimes...do you let them cry it out/ leave and lock the safe room after reading and saying goodnight etc? We have been traveling for many months and co slept fully everywhere...he is a mature bright kid but don't want to traumatize him too much !
Dream is story and goodnight and run !
Obviously a baby cam on too but we figure is he old enough to just read and go...

IberianBlackout · 23/06/2025 21:20

Nothing you described sounds extravagant at all and it seems pretty feasible when living in the UK in a moderate low cost area.

Most people I know who are strapped for cash under similar circumstances, it’s usually due to mismanagement and being a regular at the pub or thinking nights out need to go at £100-£200 a pop.

Also not going to uni or not being on LinkdIn means nothing lol.

Pickled21 · 23/06/2025 21:21

I worked at the boots in Newton le willows when I first started my career. I used to go to the cafe a few doors down for breakfast. Not been back in 15 years so wonder how the place has changed.

Perhaps they get UC and prioritise where they spend their money? I'm not on LinkedIn in either but have worked since age 16.

Why does it bother you?

Tadahhh · 23/06/2025 21:21

KatiesbigsisterSue · 23/06/2025 17:03

I know people are taking the piss a bit on this thread but @AmusedTaupePlayer i totally get it.

Mumset standards - we are on the higher end income wise as a family and I look at people all around me going on holidays abroad, eating out, private education and I wonder how they do it!!

I know we could budget better - I don’t budget at all which is my issue no doubt. Maybe they are really sensible walking round Lidl with a shopping list, batch cooking etc and that’s how they do it.

You make a good point. I haven’t bought a coffee out, ever! Never had my nails professionally done, always meal plan, have mobile hairdresser, don’t buy branded food, no commute costs in our house. House was fully refurbed so low bills (except the council tax band H). We are very low maintenance. I bet we save a fortune compared to many. We spend BIG on holidays. When my kids were tiny I dragged them round Aldi every week as it saved me £40 (compared to pre-kids Sainsbury’s shop). I used to spend that on a ski holiday.

Not being frugal where you can save, is expensive!

HellonHeels · 23/06/2025 14:34

Credit cards, loans, trust fund, benefits, criminal enterprise, inheritance, lottery win, extreme frugality?

Na it must be only fans . Of course that’s the only explanation silly.

Of course. Loved Rising Damp.

Freakedoutandannoyed · 23/06/2025 21:39

You could buy a nice house in newton-le-willows 5 years ago for 100K. He could easily be earning 40-50K in a job that doesn’t look much and she could be earning similar or slightly less and they could look like they were living an affluent lifestyle?

BodysBroken · 23/06/2025 21:49

We - and you - can't possibly know their circumstances.

I'm not working and I'm sure people who don't know us well, such as parents at the school gates, assume I "swan around" spending DH's money. What they don't know is that I've got incurable cancer and associated disabilities, for which I claim benefits; or that we've had a holiday and several event tickets kindly donated to us by charities; or that for every day that I go out for lunch or to a concert, I have 3 or 4 days I can barely get out of bed. It's hardly a life to envy.

Viviennemary · 23/06/2025 21:56

Credit cards.but they have no children so they've a lot more money to spend than folk with children who are on a similar wage.
