A relative did it once driving in an unfamiliar city. They realised quickly but other motorists realised and saw it. They fully expected comeback. It didn't come.

ButterBites · 22/06/2025 23:02

Was there a camera?

Was there a camera?

I assume so. The lane was a very small section right outside car park C Westfield. Anyone local? 🫤

Me too in London. Two lanes were stationary with traffic, left lane empty and I drove about a quarter of mile with motorists blaring their horns at me.
I only realised it was a bus lane when it ended.
I was ready for the ticket but one never came. I can only think cameras weren't working.

HundredMilesAnHour · 23/06/2025 00:14

In Newham the fine is £160, reduced to £80 if you pay within 14 days. You might get lucky that the cameras weren’t working but you’ll only know if/when you don’t receive a penalty notice.

LadyLolaRuben · 23/06/2025 00:16

Yes i did it in an empty road with 3 lanes. It wasn't clear. I was the only car on the road in Manchesrer. £35. No big deal, don't sweat it OP there's more important things in life to beat yourself up about

BashfulClam · 23/06/2025 00:18

DH git a fine as he got mixed up and thought the bus lane stopped at 6pm but it finished at 7pm. On the photo they sent I drew a bus frontage around him lol.

Nothankyov · 23/06/2025 00:19

If you pay within 14 days they will reduce the fine. Don’t worry about it. It’s not a big deal. It happens.

EconomyClassRockstar · 23/06/2025 00:22

I get so confused in town centres in the UK now. I grew up there, I knew where you were supposed to go, where you were supposed to drive and NOW?! It's absolutely insane! And you go into towns you DON'T know and you're in a one way, can't get out system and it's literally just like WTF?!!!! I would probably have a ticket every single day if I moved back. AND NOW YOU'RE TELLING ME YOU GET FINED FOR CROSSING INTO A BUS LANE FOR 10 SECONDS?!!

Menobaby79 · 23/06/2025 00:24

Yeah did this a couple of months ago driving home after a night shift. Slightly overlapped the empty bus lane going around the bend for a couple of seconds and the cameras got me. Couldn't be bothered to challenge it but bloody annoying as I'm clearly not fully in the lane on the picture.

Kttgjnk66 · 23/06/2025 09:03

Oh well. I shall watch the letterbox for the next 28 days. 😭

It makes me so mad when people get fined for a second or two in a bus lane by mistake , it's a blatant effort to get money out of people. Especially when the road markings are non existent in most cities so it's hard to work out where you're even meant to be. Sorry OP 😢 hopefully you get lucky.

scalt · 23/06/2025 09:10

The TV show Judge John Deed had the line “Deed would find something controversial in a bus lane violation”.

It does happen, but I’ve also had times where I’ve done it accidentally, and nothing happened. It’s a matter of luck whether you get fined or not.

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 23/06/2025 09:13

Yeah I got dinged once for pulling into the bus lane to let an ambulance past. C'est la vie. They had me bang to rights so I paid up.

Hold on, surely that must be an exception? It can’t be expected that you’d hold up an ambulance? I was in this exact situation a few months ago, can’t remember why the ambulance didn’t use the bus lane itself, perhaps it was about to turn right. I did not get fined but would have contested it if I had.

From what I understand if in this situation, you stay where you are not go in bus lane, the ambulance could use the bus lane. They are trained to negotiate things like this and you unfortunately are not exempt from the rules.

This is helpful thank you - I always wondered what to do if a police car, ambulance etc needs to pass.

TonTonMacoute · 23/06/2025 10:13

Probably.

I don't know if it's worse waiting for it, or when the letter arrives out of the blue because you got caught out by some extremely confusing road markings in an unfamiliar place.

RabbitsRock · 23/06/2025 10:20

DH got fined as he inadvertently went into a bus lane in a city we have only driven in a handful of times - it was just as you exit a multi storey. Neither of us had any clue until the letter came. It’s very frustrating! The fine was halved if you paid within a certain timeframe - believe DH paid £35
